Destination Relevancy 365: Why Advocating for the Destination is Good for All in the Community. A look at the advocacy work of Destinations International and their Chief Advocacy officer, Jack Johnson.

As Chief Advocacy Officer, Jack Johnson manages the overall public policy operations at Destinations International including member advocacy education and training, development of destination tools and best practices, coalition work with peer organizations, industry research and related public affairs activities.  He also oversees the board governance, the Destination Management Accreditation Program (DMAP) and the DestinationNEXT (Assessments and Planning) Program. Johnson brings unrivaled experience developing innovative strategies, policy solutions and civic consensus for government, not-for-profits and small businesses.

Johnson has received numerous accolades including being named as one of Successful Meetings’ 25 Most Influential People in the Meetings Industry in 2018 for his work on opposing travel boycotts and bans. Currently, his work around positioning destination organizations as a shared value in each of their communities and speaking with a new lexicon based on the emotion-driven by those values has made him one of the leading voices of the travel industry.

In this episode we speak with Laura Brigandi to learn about the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), their outreach to community volunteers by having them engage in grassroots advocacy and tell their personal stories. 

Laura Brigandi has fifteen years of experience in government affairs. Currently, she serves as the Senior Manager of Advocacy & Campaigns for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), where she trains volunteers to engage in grassroots advocacy and outreach in their communities. Before joining PanCAN, Laura held various government affairs roles at the College of American Pathologists, American Federation of Musicians, and Pennsylvania Department of Education. She began her career as a fundraiser for the Rendell for Governor Campaign. Laura holds a Bachelor of Arts in government from Franklin & Marshall College and a Master’s in Legislative Affairs from George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management. In 2017, she received her certificate in PAC and Grassroots Management from the Public Affairs Council.

Advocacy is an Art. Know What is Their Real Why!

In this episode, Gail Adams, Vice President of Communications and External Affairs for the International Association of Geophysical Contractors explains advocacy as an art and discusses that one needs to know what is a persons real why.

Gail has more than 20 years of experience in the environment and natural resources public policy arena and working with states and local government. She has more than 30 years’ experience in public affairs, non-profit organizations, and governmental affairs.

She is the former Director of the Office of Intergovernmental and External Affairs (OIEA) for the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), Immediate Office of the Secretary. Her responsibilities were to establish and maintain relationships between the Department of the Interior and Governors, state and local elected officials and the more than 6000 stakeholders and organizations that represent interests related to DOI.

Prior to her appointment, Gail served as the Governmental Affairs Officer for the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on loan from FEMA to the U.S. Coast Guard. Gail received the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Award, the highest public recognition given by the Commandant of the Coast Guard for her work on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.

As the Oil Spill Governmental Affairs Officer, Gail oversaw Intergovernmental Affairs, Congressional Affairs, the Non-Governmental Organization Interaction Unit, VIP and International visits as well as some aspects of Community Relations for the entire Gulf Coast. She also served as the governmental affairs advisor to the three Coast Guard Federal On-Scene Coordinators as a member of their Command Staff for the response.

She is the former Director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, Department of External Affairs for FEMA’s Louisiana Transitional Recovery Office headquartered in New Orleans.  As the IGA Director, Gail headed intergovernmental operations for Louisiana offices for Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike. Gail also coordinated all foreign delegation meetings coming to Louisiana to learn lessons of response and recovery efforts.

Gail is a former television news anchor and radio personality. She is also a certified grants writer. Adams is a graduate of Louisiana State University.

Smith oversees the Association’s member engagement, recruitment, and retention strategy as well as manages ATSSA’s Washington, DC legislative office focusing on federal, state and grassroots advocacy, government relations-related communications, advocacy strategy, and serves as Treasurer of the association’s political action committee, ATSSA PAC.

Active with the American Society of Association Executives, Smith serves as chair of the ASAE Political Action Committee and past chair of the ASAE Public Policy Committee. Smith was also honored as a 2020 Leading Association Lobbyist by Association TRENDS.

With multiple years of hill and private sector experience, Brett comes to NIADA as the new Vice President of Government Affairs. He most recently served in the Department of Transportation's Office of Government Affairs under Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. Prior to his work within DOT, Brett served as the Director of Government Affairs for the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) which represents a majority of the cruise industry around the world.
