The Challenges Chrystin Experienced

Before Chrystin Started working with me, she had experienced some challenges. One of those challenges is letting other people tell her what success should look like, which is more about helping his boss and other people look good so they can achieve their goals.

She then realized that doing such doesn't make her happy. Because she would end up standing in the crowd, watching somebody be acknowledged for the work that she has done. This was very demoralizing for Chrystin, thinking that she would always be that person in the background.

The Point of the Shift

Chrystin's point of shift started when she attended the women's leadership conference at which I'm one of the speakers. She met me there and thought that I went some really great stuff.

She felt inspired and joined a group of women from the conference. Then, sharted working with me and talked about the challenges we were facing. Such as not asking for things that you want, not living up to your full potential, and letting other people tell us that this is what your success should look like.

During the sessions, Chrystin realized that she doesn't want to live working for other people's success and just always be in the background. Then, comes real change.

Other Topics We Covered on the Show:

  • The point of not asking and just always giving.
  • The reality of doing more for other people.
  • Busy women are busy doing so many things, but not the right things.
  • The process of showing up differently and having 7 job offers.
  • How Chrystin's change affected her household.

Difficulty Showing Authenticity

For Mitchelle being professional has been part of her life. Because as a person of color, she wants to make sure that people would take her seriously. That kind of mentality didn't give her permission to experience the joy that she sees in her colleagues.

She realized that it was her fault for thinking that if she showed up as herself and were authentic it wouldn't be enough. She knew that authenticity has become a big cliche these days, people talk about showing up authentic. But she doesn't know if people really understand what that means.

A Thing that Mitchelle Needs to Accept

When we first started Mitchelle was clueless. She thought I was going to tell her to figure out how to get her out of her job. And I’m like, no, let's try to be happy where you are.

She’s not sure how this is going to work out, but it eventually turned out well. She now feels that her future is definitely bright and the different perspective she now has will serve her better.

She says, “It doesn't have to be that hard and it doesn't always have to be painful”. And that's what she needed to accept. It's living a life of joy as opposed to feeling like she needed to live a life of pain.

Other Topics We Covered on the Show:

  • From being an angry person to being someone who now enjoys joy.
  • How did Mitchelle ask for a promotion?
  • Working smarter and following what brings her joy.
  • The magic of being around other powerful women.
  • How does an inauthentic person teach you about authenticity?
  • Stronger through life experiences.
  • Being willing to open yourself up.

Mitchelle’s Challenges That Made Her Reach Out & Change

At first thought, Mitchelle’s wanted to get help with advancing her career as an in-house lawyer.

But after our first conversation, she walked away thinking she might need a little bit more help. Cause I had her thinking about some internal work that she needed to do.

She realized that it wasn't just executive presence, which she thought was what she needed to advance. She actually needed to do some internal work within her, which in turn would allow her to show up differently for those opportunities that would unfold on their own, as opposed to chasing after something.

What Mitchelle Thought Executive Presence Was & It To Be

Initially, Mitchelle thought it was showing up to meetings prepared to put on a show. To put on a show in a way that appealed to the individuals that were at the table. She thought she needed to know how to show up in a way where she can be seen and viewed as an effective leader and not an angry black woman.

But after the work we’ve done so far, she realizes that It's really not about how she shows up, but how she determines her worth. Before she was allowing others to determine her own worth as opposed to her knowing her worth and just showing up as a person that needs to be valued.

Other Topics We Covered on the Show:

  • A light bulb moment for Mitchelle realizing that it was her internal issues that were hindering her to thrive in life.
  • What happened to Mitchelle’s childhood?
  • The difference in Mitchelle’s personal quality of life and how that's changed.
  • Benefits of moving and being happy.
  • Mitchelle as a cancer survivor and the story behind that.
  • Mitchelle also shared three things on how to be able to get to the other side of your joy.
