Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t

by Lisa Levy

ABOUT THE SHOW: Dr. Lisa has been practicing unlicensed therapy since 2001. She’s worked with over 1,000 clients including artists, comedians, musicians, politicians, writers, actual shrinks, celebrities and complete strangers. In 2001, she added Self-Proclaimed Psychotherapist to her busy schedule as an art director and conceptual artist. As an art project, she conceived and produced a live show where she invited audience volunteers to have a quickie therapy session on a couch on stage with her, making fun of the fact that she had no experience, and showing off her forged diploma.Within a year she had a regular show, Psychotherapy LIVE! and a ton of press to go with it from places like, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The Village Voice and pretty much any NYC paper with a theater section. She started her radio show, Dr. Lisa Gives A Shit in 2015, and before the pandemic, continued to perform therapy live in front of audiences. With her lightning quick read of people and her forthright insights, she can get to the essence of what people are trying to communicate quickly, and her sense of humor keeps everyone out of trouble.Due to her genuine curiosity, thoughtful questioning and quick wit, Dr. Lisa’s guests/patients reveal themselves whether they are planning to or not. It takes either a willingness to divulge or a bit of courage to be on Dr. Lisa’s couch. In Dr. Lisa’s world, everyone can sit for a therapy session and anything can seem like a therapy session.https://listentodrlisa.com/

DLG226 Adrienne Truscott uses her choreography, circus acrobatic, dancing, writing, storytelling and stand up comic skills to say important things.

59m · Published 13 Jan 17:40
Adrienne Truscott is smart, wildly talented and innovative, so she's someone I've always wanted to meet, I found her to be really comfortable to talk to so we really went deep. Adrienne is someone who's really made her own way, which is why I think her work is so original. We talk about her athletic skills and how she came to combine them with her creativity after she got bored with sports. Adrienne was also generous in discussing a lot of other personal stuff which you can check out for yourself. There is so much to experience with Adrienne Truscott. I heartily recommend looking further into her/her work here: http://www.adriennetruscott.com/

DLG1847 Artist/Curator Patty Fabricant shares her insights about the relationships between artists who share studios.

59m · Published 13 Jan 17:39
Patty is an excellent visual artist/painter who has just hung a show at Front Room-open until Jan. 6, titled, "Studio Mates", which features 5 pairs of artists who share studios. https://www.frontroomles.com/ We have an engaging and illuminating discussion about what the experience and effect of having a studio mate is on ones art and life. Patty has some great stories about the studio visits she made during the curation of this show. There’s some great stories about Patty’s own studio share with artist Amy Hill. (Here's a Dr. Lisa session with Amy: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/drlisa/episodes/2018-09-25T09_55_52-07_00). We also talk about Patty’s dramatic change of subject in her own work—abstract to an original form of self-portraiture. She says due to her feelings resulting from the election of Donald Trump, but Dr. Lisa pokes around to check if there’s more personal besides her political feelings behind that. DLG285 Shirley Weir and Dr. Lisa discuss how to change the perception of menopause to be normal/more modern/sexier.

56m · Published 23 Dec 15:44
Shirley Weir, author of Mokita,: How to navigate perimenopause with confidence & ease and founder of Menopause Chicks, is now an expert on menopause from a physical, psychological, emotional and sociological point of view. She has helped countless women and created a community of over 27k women to support each other on these topics. We have a very frank discussion about menopause and that it has gotten an unnecessarily bad rap—how can we change the perception of menopause and perimenopause—a normal life transition that no one wants to talk about. As usual for me, I was very frank about my own feelings and experiences. Shelly was smart, graceful and supportive. If our conversation doesn't convince you that menopause is normal and not all bad and we need to change the perception of it—well then, just stay in your cave! About Shirley Weir Shirley Weir introduces herself as a Menopause Chick. Sore boobs, sleep deprivation, depression and brain fog led Shirley to her doctor’s office, the book store and “Dr. Google,” but she was left feeling confused, overwhelmed and alone. So she created Menopause Chicks to empower women to talk openly about perimenopause and menopause. Now she leads a private online community with an average of 15,000 questions and comments every month. Women regard the group as a trustworthy space to get their questions answered and to confirm they are not alone.

DLG284 Comedian Matt Ruby does a LOT of thinking and he can open up your head too.

59m · Published 15 Dec 20:26
I saw Matt do a super interesting comedy show at a yoga studio last month called Misguided Meditation. It was great and he's doing another one January 22 at Yoga to the People – East Village TICKETS HERE He has a great newsletter too = sign up here: THE RUBESLETTER He's a really great comedian where you walk out thinking about what you were just laughing about. This episode stuck around in my head for a while—like a good acid trip. Matt really shared a lot of personal stuff. He’s has a very successful career as a comedian performing regularly at The Comedy Cellar. His comedy is hilarious! Plus exceptionally smart, thoughtful and his work has some great messages about toxic masculinity, which was refreshing to hear from a straight dude. I harassed him to share more specifically about the points he is making, why those issues speak to him and where they come from (a prosecutor dad and artist mom). Matt understand his feelings and is very articulate, There’s a lot to draw you in. More Matt: BIO Matt Ruby is a NYC comedian that tells smart/dark jokes for people with a finely tuned BS detector. He's a regular at the Comedy Cellar in NYC, in regular rotation on SiriusXlllllllM, his album "Hot Flashes" went top 10 at iTunes, and he's been seen on Laughs on FOX, MTV's Girl Code, and The Comedy Show Show on NBC/Seeso. He's also the creator of Vooza, a video comic strip about the tech world (called the "The Spinal Tap of startups" by Mashable) and co-producer of Hot Soup, one of NYC’s longest running independently produced comedy shows. H Outside of standup, he's the creator of Vooza, a video comic strip about the tech world that’s received millions of view and was called the "The Spinal Tap of startups" by Mashable and (SIGN UP FOR THIS!!! ) he’s the author of the Rubesletter, a weekly newsletter with over 15,000 subscribers.

DLG283 Shonali Bhowmik has some great insights about happiness and the life of a creative person.

59m · Published 15 Dec 19:14
Shonali Bhowmik is a musician, actress, comedienne, filmmaker, writer with a law degree! Her bio is extensive, but here's a taste of what she's involved with mostly right now—she co-hosts her own live variety show podcast series called We Don’t Even Know AND she is the leader of the indie rock band Tigers and Monkeys for which she is the songwriter, singer, and guitar player. I learned so much from this session with Shonali. She creates purely from the need to create and grow. I kicked the emotional tires and she honestly just seems like a naturally happy, yet driven creative person, self-motivated—with a key ingredient—HARD WORK! Oh and a great family, which she appreciates. Further Bio: She is a member of the popular comedy collective Variety Shac, with Chelsea Peretti, Heather Lawless and Andrea Rosen. Shonali was the host of the Shac’s popular Upright Citizen’s Brigade live show. She has also created television pilots for the Adult Swim and IFC networks. She wrote and directed the short film, Sardines Out Of A Can which was screened in 6 cities across the globe including Madrid, Spain; Bangalore, India and won best romantic comedy short at the Bare Bones International Film Fest 2014. She has her own independent music and comedy record label called Little Lamb Recordings.  She was one of the leaders of Ultrababyfat who was featured in David Cross’ tour DVD Let America Laugh. Shonali has released eight albums including her solo full length release 100 Oaks Revival and those with her rock n’ roll outfits,Tigers and Monkeys and Ultrababyfat. Tigers and Monkeys' newest album Saturday Destroyer was released in September 2018. Shonali can be seen in the feature length romantic comedy, Isn’t It Romantic which was released in February 2019.  There's so much more about Shonali—check out her website and Instagram

DLG1649_Dr. Lisa tries to convince a sex worker to go to a sex party.

59m · Published 15 Dec 16:50
I had an interesting session with a female sex worker. BTW: That really is her photo—I didn't take it but she did text it to me. This session was complicated, but most importantly it was compelling to have a smart woman talk about why being a sex worker is a sensible option for her. I concur! We get into discussing relationships and I try to explain why the possibility of a sex party might be a good way for her to meet a good guy.

DLG282 Artist Eric Doeringer discusses MEMORY WARE Flats, his latest 3-year long project.

59m · Published 27 Nov 16:03
Eric Doeringer is a highly respected, prolific, conceptual artist who is renown for his rich body of work—his appropriation art is particularly well-known and takes many forms. If you don't know what appropriation art is look it up! This particular work of Eric's is an appropriation of artist Mike Kelley's work, which likely was made with the help of studio assistants. I've interviewed Eric before about previous intensive long-term art projects, but each of his projects has a fully unique process in the execution of the work since each project demands a different execution. Basically, Eric can make anything. His process borders on performance art which is integral to the creation of the work, but not obvious in the viewing of it, unless the viewer contemplates, "How the f*ck did someone make this?" Memory Ware Flats consists of (3) 4x6' framed pieces, each weighs 150lbs.The process of making them involves procuring, sifting through little "memory" pieces and uses a mosaic type of process in the realization of it. One aspect of the beauty of this work is the joy and simplicity in the initial viewing of the work, which belies its complexity. Eric and his wife Cathay moved several times during the 3-year period during the creation of this work. The work started about a year before the pandemic and culminated in a fabulous show at A Hug From the Art World, October, 2021. Eric's work/life during this period involved making about one painstaking square foot a day. Our Dr. Lisa session illuminates a hard-to imagine artist's journey as well as a testament to the tenacity and dedication of a real-deal artist. DLG281 Scientist Judith Zeilkoff in conversation with a former student, Nosa Avenbuan about what it means to be a female scientist today.

59m · Published 26 Nov 20:37
Over this past summer, I had scientist, Judith Zeilkoff, on #drlisagivesashit to discuss her career and the struggles as a woman pursuing science in the era of her development and how she triumphed to become a professor in the Dept. of Environmental Medicine at the Grossman School of Medicine in NYC. You can listen to this episode HERE. To further this discussion here - in this episode - Judith returns with a mentee of hers, Oyemwenosa Avenbuan, (Nosa), a recent graduate student from New York University with a Master of Science in Environmental Health specializing in toxicology. Nosa, Judith—along with Dr. Lisa—discuss what has changed (not enough) and what hasn't, yet remain cautiously optimistic. Things aren't where they should be, but there are women like Judith who has smashed a few ceilings to pave the way for smart, hardworking, women like Nosa. Women in science are taking their place and there's still work to be done. More about Dr. Zeilkoff: Dr. Zelikoff is a professor in the Dept. of Environmental Medicine at the Grossman School of Medicine in NYC. She has over 25 years of experience in toxicology and environmental health. https://med.nyu.edu/faculty/judith-t-zelikoff which is that branch of public health concerned with reducing those factors in the environment like air and water pollution that affect human health and disease. Her scientific research focuses on the toxic health effects of inhaled air pollutants like ozone and air particles, as well as effects from toxic materials from tobacco and electronic cigarettes, fires and diesel exhaust. Over the last decade, studies in her laboratory have also focused on the effects of inhaled environmental toxic materials, including electronic cigarettes during pregnancy and their effects on neurodevelopment, cardiovascular disease, birth outcomes, obesity, behavior and reproductive success. Her studies have revealed that early life exposure to e-cigarette aerosols can affect childhood behavior, brain function and lung disease in the adults and that such effects can occur even without nicotine present. DLG280 Comedian Sean Gibbs didn't start out cool and funny in life but it was naturally baked in.

59m · Published 10 Nov 19:06
I was thrilled to have comedian Sean Gibbs on the show since I had gotten to know him a bit at the open mics I've started going to but hadn't really spent time with him. When I first met Sean about six months ago, he was single, but he has a new girlfriend so that was fun to talk about. I also found out that Sean had come from Kansas City and moving from the city to the suburbs was... well let's say "stifling." Sean rebelled and it led him to a pretty exciting life as a musician, living in Manchester, England for a time. Follow Sean here: @seangibbs108 More Sean here: https://www.goodonecomedy.com/

DLG246 Jon Reid impresses Dr Lisa with how well he has coped with his childhood trauma.

59m · Published 06 Nov 00:43
Jon Reid is the host of one of RFB's most popular show, Race To The Bottom, live every Saturday 10am. Jon talks about how he and his wife are thinking of starting a family and he's thinking about how his issues growing up with his difficult brother will affect him. The thing I noticed about Jon is his HUMILITY. It makes him open to his own self-improvement. Jon has coped with his trauma in a long-term, extremely positive way, which allows him to have a great marriage and highly productive and satisfying life. I don't feel the details of what he went through is my story to tell, but in this session Jon relates his experience very well. Personally, I learned some things in this hour.
