Tell Me Why That Gap on Your Resume Is a Good Thing
40m · Published
Today is a special episode for two reasons. First, we are talking about the applicant experience from the employee perspective. Being on the job market teaches applicants a lot about what to expect, what to look for, and most importantly, what to avoid while looking. Second, it is my first in person podcast recording! My colleague and friend, Jared Glasser who has written about employment matters and operates his own work-related comic strip (https://jaredglasser.com/) joins me today.

Anyone in the field of HR knows how crazy the talent situation is in the US. High turnover, fewer candidates, steep competition, and serious retention challenges all lend to this problem. I recently spoke to Francesca Bossi, Chief Human Resource Officer at Docebo (https://www.docebo.com/). Docebo operates globally including in Europe, UK, US, and Canada. We discuss the situation as well as some ideas that might help.

Creatively Unlocking the Potential of Unused PTO
33m · Published
What happens to employees’ unused paid time off (PTO)? It’s value for the employee is lost along with the benefits of them taking time to unwind and relax. Today’s guest has a unique anc compelling approach to unlocking the potential of unused PTO.
It’s my pleasure to have with me today Rob Whalen, Co-Founder and CEO of PTO Exchange (https://www.ptoexchange.com/), the first benefits platform that allows employees to self-direct the value of their unused paid time off (PTO) for other needs and causes. He is a serial entrepreneur that has over 25 years selling and developing software.

Will Lowering Wages Solve the Talent Crisis?
51m · Published
Given that there is a hiring shortage right now, wouldn’t it be crazy if someone were to suggest lowering wages as a solution? That’s exactly what Business Insider (https://rb.gy/uurfr5) is reporting about an executive at AFC Brands, which owns 67 Taco Bell and 50 Applebee’s restaurants in a leaked internal email. Among other things, he suggested high gas prices would force candidates to work for less.
I’m here to discuss this approach and related issues with Ira Wolfe (https://www.irawolfe.com/), an author, speaker, and President of Success Performance Solutions. He has been described as a “Millennial trapped in a Baby Boomer body” and “certified prophet” of workforce trends. He is indeed a visionary thinker and excellent guest.

Stop Being Timid about Mental Health
21m · Published
When it comes to mental health in the workplace, many get timid around these kinds of challenges. When considering revealing mental health challenges, employees fear losing opportunities for growth and advancement and even their jobs. But when people face their challenges, see therapists and counselors, and enact strategies they are actively working on themselves. Employers need to start doing more than pointing employees towards an EAP, they need to recognize the strengths and abilities of all employees, including those with mental health challenges. Today guest is Eric Kussin, one-time Chief Revenue Officer for the Florida Panthers, and Founder of the excellent non-profit #SameHere Global (https://samehereglobal.org/).

41m · Published
There are so many persistent myths from employers and employees about new parents and caretakers in general that create real problems surrounding mental health, engagement, retention, employer branding, and more. Discover Simplicity on the Other Side of Complexity
37m · Published
I recently had the absolutely pleasure of interviewing the brilliant Dave Ulrich, Speaker, Author, Professor, and Thought Partner on Human Capability. In past interviews we’ve discussed what HR will look like in 5 years. Given the upheaval over the last few years, Dave and I instead focus on what he calls “discovering simplicity on the other side of complexity.” That is, developing a framework that can help employers and HR professionals, as well as employees get in the right mindset to deal with constant change, upheaval, and chaos.
In the episode Dave discusses a few of his recent LinkedIn posts, which can be seen here:
