We are adapting our model to reach more vulnerable people with dyslexia during this COVID19 through the use of podcasts that will be published on our website and other social media channels. A series of short 30-45 mins broadcasts will offer people access to tips and coping techniques.

Dyslexia: Reaching your full potential during Covid-19

In episode 4, we are joined by Crispian Wilson who is a Diplomat at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office and also a dyslexia to speak on the topic of ‘Dyslexia: Reaching your full potential during COVID-19’.

 

Crispian has worked for the Foreign Office for 15 years, working mainly on issues of conflict and crisis management in the Middle East. He has spent 3 years living in Turkey, and he is currently preparing for a placement in Warsaw, Poland and is learning Polish.

 

Crispian was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was 8 years old and went on to study Material Sciences at Oxford University. He is part of the neurodiverse network in the Foreign Office, championing for those with neurodiversity.

Dyslexia: Working with your strengths during Covid-19

In this episode, we are joined by Daniel Brooke to speak on the topic of ‘Dyslexia: Working with your strengths during COVID-19’.

 

Daniel founded the company Neurodiversity Specialists to provide organisations with the knowledge and tools to benefit from having a neurodiverse workforce, and to understand the value of neurodiversity. Daniel is a British Dyslexia Association (BDA) qualified workplace needs assessor, with a background in career coaching and employability skills training, and has experience of supporting hundreds of neurodivergent individuals across many different sectors.

 

Daniel also has a strong passion for advising organisations on how to create a clear process of support for neurodivergent employees and how to attract and retain neurodiverse talent.

In episode 12, we were joined again by our guest speaker Dr Neil Alexander-Passe (SENDCO at Hasmonean High School, Expert SEND Advisor at the Department of Education, Book Author) who is also dyslexic himself to speak on the topic 'Dyslexia: Supporting your Child’s Emotional Health during COVID 19'.


Dr Neil Alexander-Passe is the Head of SEND unit at a large co-education mainstream secondary school in North London, rated by OFSTED to be 'outstanding'. He is also an inclusion expert for the UK's Department of Education. He gained his Doctorate/PhD in 2018.


His latest, and 11th book, 'Surviving School as a Dyslexic Teenager: A Guide for Parents and their Teenager Children (Critical Youth Studies)' has been launched in May 2020. It offers an easy and approachable book for parents, educators, and teenagers with dyslexia. 


'What makes this book so unique and something that families with teenagers with dyslexia should seek out and read? One feature that particularly appealed to me was the handy tips provided at the end of each chapter. If you’re seeking inspiring content to help you realise the potential of a teenager with dyslexia I cannot recommend this too highly.'

Dyslexia: Mental Health and Wellbeing during COVID 19

In episode 9, we were joined again by our guest speaker Rachel Fahy a Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Trainer (ASIST) and Yoga Alliance Professional to speak on the topic 'Dyslexia: Mental Health and Wellbeing during COVID 19'.


Rachel is a Mental Health Advisor in Higher Education, a qualified yoga teacher and an adult with dyslexia.


In her role as a Mental Health Advisor, she assesses University students support needs and recommends reasonable adjustments to help them manage the affect that their mental health condition may have on their academic studies and emotional health. These adjustments may cover exam access arrangements, coursework and suggested methods of teaching delivery.

She also provides specialist one to one mentoring for students with mental health conditions. Mentoring may include enabling the student to plan their workload, developing strategies to manage stress and anxiety, discussing potential triggers for relapse, identifying self-help resources and looking after their wellbeing from a holistic approach.


Outside of this role, she teaches yoga based on a mindful, compassionate and inclusive approach.

Dyslexia: Coping with Stress during COVID 19

In episode 7, we were joined by our guest speaker Jonathan Flint to speak on the topic 'Dyslexia: Coping with Stress during COVID 19'. Jonny is a PhD Student in Developmental Psychology at Cardiff University.


He has written many coming out speeches: one for being gay, one for being dyslexic, one for being dyspraxic and one for anyone who didn’t bother to listen to the first three. The one factor that all of these have in common is an incredible sense of resilience, that is one of many variables which has enabled him to succeed so far.

Anna is a qualified mindfulness teacher who runs therapy and workshops with individuals and groups. Her mission is to offer mindfulness therapy to every individual who struggles with 'work-life balance'.


Mindfulness helps manage and also prevent severe health conditions. It is a tool for your mental hygiene, preventing anxiety and depression before they take a grip – it is your “mental floss” for life.
