On this episode, we’re joined by our first guest: Dave Borrel! We chat with him about making career shifts, discovering new passions and redefining what is most important to us in life. Dave is a first year student in the UBC Bachelor of Computer Science degree. It is a second-degree program for those wanting to transition into a career in tech. Before going back to school, Dave worked in social services for a couple of years. He is passionate about bouldering and hope to tackle more challenging climbs this summer. In addition to climbing, Dave also has a YouTube channel and photography page where he hopes to add more content for in the future.

From a young age, society has taught a certain set of social norms that define “masculinity”. More and more, people are recognizing how unhealthy masculinity negatively impact both men and the people around them. For People of Colour, what part of their lived experience reinforces these unhealthy qualities of masculinity? How do we start redefining masculinity and the idea of being “man enough”?

In this episode, Hussein and Stephanie explore how unhealthy masculinity has held back men from growth, introspection, and vulnerable conversation.

It’s not too late to reflect on the year that was 2021...a year that was filled with many ups and downs for the entire world. While the new year is a great time to think about these things and reflect on how you have grown as a person, taking the time to reflect can happen whenever you have capacity for it!

In our last episode, we talked about the beauty of bridging different identities in an interracial and interfaith relationship. However, an additional layer of complexity and challenge in many interracial and interfaith relationships is in family. In this episode, Hussein and Stephanie open up about their recent challenges with family unacceptance.

The two dive deep into how rejection and unacceptance have shaped their relationship and how they navigate these challenges. What is required of each of them to feel seen and supported during times of uncertainty and unacceptance? This is an ongoing journey and we ask that you hold this episode with deep grace and empathy.

An interracial and interfaith relationships bridges together intersecting identities. It encourages us to see the world in a way that goes beyond the lens we were taught growing up. Stephanie and Hussein spend the next two episodes doing a deeper dive into their interracial and interfaith relationship. They explore all of the different identities they bring into their relationship as Chinese, Filipino and Lebanese second generation immigrants as well as their spiritual identities.  

In episode 6, they talk about the beautiful parts of being in an interracial/interfaith relationship and how they have been able to navigate their differences. In episode 7, they'll dive deeper into some of the challenges and nuances when building in conversations about family and unacceptance.

In this episode, Stephanie and Hussein continue their conversation about spirituality and religion. This time, we talk about Hussein's identity! He talks candidly about his journey with his Muslim identity including how he grew up in a religious household, the fluid nature of his religious identity and how his identity has evolved over time.

It's Stephanie's turn to get vulnerable about her failures. Stephanie shares her journey with entering a career in medicine and the failures she has been experiencing for the last 4 years of her professional life. She gets candid about her long-time career goal and her feelings of inadequacy throughout the process. Stephanie shares about the importance of finding and relying on community. She talks about re-discovering herself throughout the process and what lessons she hopes to bring with her in her future career endeavors.

Failure is an inevitable part of life, right? In this episode, Hussein and Stephanie sit down and talk about failure. Hussein opens up about his journey navigating the academic challenges and failures he experienced during the first few years of his university career. University is hard and it isn't a surprise that many university students experience difficulties with their academics. Even though it is such a common experience, it can still feel really isolating and confusing when you're going through it alone. Now, a university graduate, Hussein shares how his mindset has shifted after overcoming his academic failures.
