14. Shootin the Shit with Justin from Creeporama.com - Halloween Episode

1h 57m · Published 22 Oct 13:00

Cubicle Athlete is a podcast that typically delves into topics and discussions related to sports one way or another, but for Halloween I had to do an episode that goes into my favorite genre of film...horror. And I couldn't think of a better guest to discuss horror movies with other than my friend's Justin and James from https://www.creeporama.com. Unfortunately, James could not make it for this episode, so do expect another horror episode to come out in the near future with him in it.

13. Coach Kyle of Relentless Hockey - Hockey Strength & Conditioning Coach

1h 14m · Published 29 Sep 13:07

Relentless Hockey was created with the pursuit of better.

https://www.relentlesshockey.com/

Created in 2016, by former elite hockey player turned Performance Coach Kyle Kokotailo, Relentless Hockey was built to bridge the gap between Strength & Conditioning and on-ice performance with the training players truly need to enhance their performance.

Started in Burlington, Ontario –  Relentless Hockey garnered the attention of elite players for having training that they actually noticed on the ice.

As players returned to their teams across North America or overseas, they wanted to continue training Relentless and started requesting workout programs they could be doing on their own. Seeing the results - many of their teammates started reaching out for their own programs.

After sending hundreds of PDFs to players across the world, we set out to create a better training tool that would allow players to have videos of exercises, track their workouts, and have more support from our team - this led to the creation of the Relentless Hockey App.

Today, Relentless Hockey works with hockey players playing in over 10 countries along with teams & organizations across North America. They continue to push players to their game to the next level & pursue better.

11. Shootin the Shit with Brunswick - Host of the Project Panthers Podcast

1h 45m · Published 16 May 12:00

I've been a Florida Panthers fan since their inaugural year in 1993. And this year was their best year. Playoffs start today. I sat down with Brunswick, the host of the Project Panthers Podcast and we shoot the shit for a couple of hours and discussed the history of the Panthers, the success of this season, our thoughts and predictions on the upcoming playoffs, and our expectations and hopes for the team's future.

This was a blast Alex - thanks buddy.

10. Fred Fox - Brother of Canadian Hero, Terry Fox & Manager Supporter Relations at the Terry Fox Foundation

57m · Published 14 May 12:00

Fred is Terry Fox's older brother, and he was so generous with his time to have a chat with me about Terry and the foundation. Every Canadian knows who Terry Fox is. Kids across Canada today read about him in the history books. Those who were alive in 1980 saw him on TV every morning running across the country on 1 leg and 1 shitty prosthetic. He was raising money to fund cancer research. Over 40 years after his passing at 22 years old from cancer, his foundation has now raised over $850 million. The Canadian Federal Government is planning on putting a new face on the $5 bill, and Terry is the front runner.

Terry Fox is a hero, and I think Americans should know about him too.

9. Dr. David Meyer PT, DPT, CSCS - Author of Injured to Elite, former MLB Rehab Coordinator

45m · Published 30 Mar 13:00

After serving the St. Louis Cardinals as their Medical and Rehabilitation Coordinator, Dr. David Meyer PT, DPT wrote “Injured to Elite: A Guide to Empowering Yourself to Transform Your Life After Injury”, to empower the world with a newfound mental approach to physical rehab. As a Sports Performance-oriented Physical Therapist, he graduated with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from New York University. After completing an advanced sports residency training program at the world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, he served as the Medical and Rehabilitation Coordinator for the St. Louis Cardinals for three years from 2015 through the 2017 season. This was a dream of his that came to fruition after playing baseball throughout his entire life into the collegiate level. During his time working for the Cardinals, he discovered a new appreciation for the psychological implications of sports rehabilitation after seeing the profound impact it had on players and began developing a comprehensive approach to integrating mental skills and strategies into the physical rehabilitation process. While now serving as an advocate for athletes going through adversity and working towards advanced credentials with the Association of Applied Sports Psychology, as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant, his mission has become to “Empower those facing physical challenges to transform their lives through an optimal state of body, mind, and spirit.” Currently, he resides in New York with his soon-to-be wife (the wedding was delayed by COVID). David has now created a community of developing sports professionals and athletes that all identify with being an underdog, in order to change the future of sports performance and healthcare.

8. Colt Blunt - Cancer Survivor, Cancer Advocate, and All Around Badass

1h 44m · Published 18 Dec 14:00

Colt was dealt bad hand after bad hand, and this quote from Chief Tecumseh is one that he has held to heart throughout his journey of getting diagnosed with stomach cancer in his mid 30s, being told he had a slim chance of surviving, going through several rounds of chemo, and getting his stomach surgically removed. Roughly a year later, he's on the podcast with me, cancer free, telling his story and having a glass of scotch...without a stomach.

When I edit these episodes, I look for short excerpts to make these little videos for Instagram and it's usually easy to find 2 or 3 awesome snippets. With Colt, there were so many and it was hard to pick which ones to use. So just listen to the whole episode because this guy is next level.

Check out Debbie's Dream Foundation (debbiesdream.org), which is an organization that helped Cole out when he was diagnosed, as well as Hope for Stomach Cancer (stocan.org), which is another great organization. Both organizations do a ton to provide resources to patients and caregivers, advocate nationally for increased funding for stomach cancer, and partner internationally with experts in the field to further our understanding of stomach cancer.

Cole has also contributed to a book series edited by Travis Langley, who wrote Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight. The books are written by a group of mental health professionals who refer to themselves as the Psych Geeks. They've published books looking at a number of popular franchises through a psychological lens, including The Walking Dead, Star Wars, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, Supernatural, the Joker, and others. You can find them on our Facebook page or at your local bookseller.

7. Hari Budha Magar - Double Above-Knee Amputee and World Record-Breaking Mountaineer

1h 14m · Published 24 Nov 14:00

Hari Budha Magar is a Nepalese born man who served around the world with the Gurkhas in the British military. He stepped on an IED in Afghanistan back in 2010 and lost his legs, both above the knee. It was a long battle to regain his confidence and reclaim his life, and sports played a crucial role in getting him to where he is today. He is an incredible athlete and holds the world record for being the first double above-knee amputee to summit a peak over 6000 meters - which was Mera Peak at 6,476 meters. He is also preparing to be the first ever double above-knee amputee to even attempt to climb the world's tallest mountain, Mount Everest. There's a long list of many other feats, records and accomplishments, some of which we get into throughout the episode.

6. Rob Biasotti - Teacher, Coach & Dean at one of the Nation's Top High School Athletic Programs

2h 12m · Published 28 Sep 15:34

Rob Biasotti was a teacher and Strength & Conditioning coach at one of the top, if not THE top high school athletic programs in the country; St. Thomas Aquinas High School. I'm not sure how many pro athletes Rob coached in their high school years, but it's a higher number than most high school coaches. STA leads the NFL in most alumni nearly every year (15 last year).

Rob's experiences include being a nominated McDonald’s high school all-American, played basketball for Stetson University, Masters Degree in Exercise Science, NASM Certified Performance Enhancement Specialist, 2008 Under Armor High School Strength and Conditioning Coach of the year, has won 7 Football State Championships and 2 National Championships, and much more.

Rob was one of my favorite teachers when I attended STA from 2001-2005, and he left a big impact on me and a lot of my fellow classmates. It was an honor to have him on the podcast to discuss sports, philosophy, being a father, life lessons, and simply catching up for the first time in 15-years.

Rob is currently the dean of students at St. Thomas Aquinas High School.
