Season 4 Episode #14 Celebrating Cultural Resilience and Triumphs: Stories of Strength From My Family

12m · Published 20 Oct 17:00

Picture this: a Liberian war survivor rising to become a VP of Safety and Loss at a reputable firm or a couple newly married during a Civil War awaiting their day to truly celebrate. This week, we highlight the indomitable spirit of cultural resilience through the inspiring stories of my beloved relatives - Maryann Hoff, Rocky, and Rosalyn Clarke. Their journey is a testament to how cultures can retain their identity, knowledge, and practices even amidst hardships.

Imagine if educators acknowledged and celebrated the cultural resilience within their students' stories. It's not just about fostering a more inclusive learning environment, but also about strengthening the connection with their BIPOC students. We reflect upon this and more in our latest episode. So, whether you're an educator aiming to understand your students more deeply, or simply someone interested in the resilience and triumphs of BIPOC folks, this episode is your ticket. Come, join our celebration of cultural resilience and connection. See you on the other side!

Season 4 Episode #13 Empowering Your DEI Journey with Free Resources

11m · Published 13 Oct 10:00

Craving a deeper understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) but scared of the potential costs? Fear not, I've got just the ticket. I introduce you to free resources and strategies that will enlighten, educate, and empower you on your DEI journey. Listen in as I share my personal favorites from the podcast universe including 'DEI After Five' by Sasha Thompson and 'Confessions of a DEI Pro' by Ashanti Bentil-Dhue, providing you with a wealth of insights into topics like justice in DEI, creating inclusive spaces, and more.

But it doesn't stop there! We tackle the importance of journaling as a method of personal reflection, giving you practical pointers on maintaining a DEI-specific journal. Listen closely as I impart wisdom on the common misconceptions of DEI, and the often inappropriate responsibility placed on BIPOC individuals to educate others. I guide you towards valuable resources like the Conscious Kid and Learning for Justice, platforms that are teeming with material for social justice education. Lastly, I let you in on a secret: a free webinar, 'How to Understand DEI Without Being Overwhelmed,' and an upcoming digital course on becoming a culturally competent leader. I promise, you don't want to miss out on the wealth of knowledge we've packed into this episode.

Season 4 Episode #6 My Conversation with When Brown Girls Lead Founder & CEO Nadia Bennett

31m · Published 11 Aug 10:00

Nadia  is a school turnaround strategist and former educational leader that made huge strides in the   education system during her 15+ years of service. During her time as a school leader, she was able to double the success rate of English Language Arts (ELA) test scores in her students, increase student attendance and boost teacher retention. In 2017, as principal of the Simon Gratz Mastery Charter School, the school topped the Philadelphia Charter School Performance Profile. Even the New Jersey Department of Education said she was responsible for “restoring faith in a district that had taken a turn for the worse.”

Nadia took everything she learned while she was in the school system and founded When Brown Girls Lead™, an education consulting firm that specializes in creating psychologically safe, authentic and brave spaces for black women to access and succeed in K-12 leadership roles. What she and her team accomplish is monumental, but here is a glance at what they provide: antiracism training, 1:1 leadership coaching, and leadership development.
