International Women's Day Special - Carolyn Mercer, an LGBTQIA+ advocate and Stonewall ambassador, leads today's lesson
46m · PublishedThis episode of EduKATE contains references to violence and suicide, which some listeners may find distressing. Listener discretion is advised.
In this episode of EduKATE, which falls on International Women's Day, I am joined by the incredible Carolyn Mercer. This was one of the most important and enlightening conversations I’ve ever had. Being born in 1947, the word was a rather different one to where we’re at today in 2021- the word ‘transgender’ would not yet be coined until 1971, and ‘trans’ not until 1996.
We start chronologically, at age three, where Carolyn tells me that this is when she first remembers experiencing gender dysphoria. At age 17, she talks about undergoing the horrific practice of electro conversion therapy. I find out that in her adult life working as a headteacher, Carolyn was outed by the press, on more than one occasion. We then talk about the brilliant work that@stonewallukdo, and the absolute necessity for the UK govt to make all forms of conversion therapy illegal, as well as practical steps to improve gender equality in UK education systems... aaaaaannnddddd of course, what it means to be a woman.

I grew up during the tech boom and it's time to reflect on the technology that has shaped us
28m · PublishedIn this weeks episode of EduKATE, I take a trip down memory lane, tracking the last 24 years of major tech and social advancements in my lifetime and talk about about the types of technology that have shaped me into who I am today. From the early days of the Nintendo DS chatrooms, navigating the confusing social worlds of Bebo --> Facebook --> Instagram --> TikTok, there's a lot to reflect upon, in such a comparably small amount of time. A LOT HAS HAPPENED, AND IT'S HAPPENED VERY QUICKLY - WOAH. This is a playful episode with scatterings of retrospective observational reflections, musing over the addictiveness and utter reliance we all now have with technology today. Do we really have agency over our own lives here when such big tech is involved in all aspects of our lifestyles?!

The Emergence Of KAREN - a deep dive
15m · PublishedEduKATE is back this week to do a deep dive into the devious world that is scattered with Karens. Where did the term come from? What does it mean? Discussing why Karen's complaining about being called Karen might be my favourite thing ever about 2020 and generally informative rambling about the 'derogatory' slur that's rightfully entered the world.
