Building on the ideas introduced in his New York Times best-selling book, "For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood," Christopher Emdin introduces an alternative educational model that will help students (and teachers) celebrate ratchet identity in the classroom. "Ratchetdemic advocates" for a new kind of student identity—one that bridges the seemingly disparate worlds of the ivory tower and the urban classroom. Dr. Emdin discusses his new book with kessica Care Moore.
Dr. Christopher Emdin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology at Teachers College, Columbia University; where he also serves as Director of the Science Education program and Associate Director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education. jessica Care moore is an American poet. She is the CEO of Moore Black Press, executive producer of Black WOMEN Rock!, and founder of the literacy-driven Jess Care Moore Foundation.
An internationally renowned poet, playwright, performance artist and producer, she is the recipient of the 2013 Alain Locke Award from the Detroit Institute of Arts and the author of numerous books. This virtual event took place on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. This is a recording of that program. Also the author of Urban Science Education for the Hip-Hop Generation, he created the #HipHopEd social media movement and the Science Genius B.A.T.T.L.E.S. program, which uses rap to engage students with science. Emdin is a professor of science education at Columbia University, where he is associate director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education and director of the Science Education program.
