Building on the ideas introduced in his New York Times best-selling book, "For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood," Christopher Emdin introduces an alternative educational model that will help students (and teachers) celebrate ratchet identity in the classroom. "Ratchetdemic advocates" for a new kind of student identity—one that bridges the seemingly disparate worlds of the ivory tower and the urban classroom. Dr. Emdin discusses his new book with kessica Care Moore.  

Dr. Christopher Emdin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology at Teachers College, Columbia University; where he also serves as Director of the Science Education program and Associate Director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education.  jessica Care moore  is an American poet. She is the CEO of Moore Black Press, executive producer of Black WOMEN Rock!, and founder of the literacy-driven Jess Care Moore Foundation. 

An internationally renowned poet, playwright, performance artist and producer, she is the recipient of the 2013 Alain Locke Award from the Detroit Institute of Arts and the author of numerous books.  This virtual event took place on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. This is a recording of that program.  The Detroit Public Library (DPL) is the largest public library system in the state of Michigan. The Department of Teaching and Learning at Coppin State University virtually hosted a colloquium entitled “Culturally Responsive Teaching: Research and Practice in an Urban Context.” The colloquium’s featured panelists included Dr. Juanita Ashby-Bey, Coppin State University Assistant Professor; Dr. Wyletta Gamble-Lomax, Coppin State University Assistant Professor; and New York Times Bestselling author, Dr. Christopher Emdin.  Dr. Emdin is a social critic, public intellectual and science advocate whose commentary on issues of race, culture, inequality, and education have appeared in dozens of influential periodicals including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post. He is the creator of the #HipHopEd social media movement, and a much sought-after public speaker on several topics that include hip-hop education, STEM education, politics, race, class, diversity, and youth empowerment. Recorded September 13, 2021  Christopher Emdin is the author of The New York Times bestseller For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood… and the Rest of Y’all Too, a combination of theory, research, and practical application that offers a helpful approach to teaching in urban classrooms of color. Also the author of Urban Science Education for the Hip-Hop Generation, he created the #HipHopEd social media movement and the Science Genius B.A.T.T.L.E.S. program, which uses rap to engage students with science. Emdin is a professor of science education at Columbia University, where he is associate director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education and director of the Science Education program.
