18. Joshua Lucas - The Future

52m · Published 21 Jan 05:00

Guest: Joshua Lucas

Theme: The Future

Host(s): Kurt Henry & Asha Lapps

Joshua Lucas

In less than 21 years, Joshua Lucas has blazed his own trail of a career in the music and entertainment scene in Toronto. Known as the “future”, Lucas has taken a role as a cultural preserver of authentic Jamaican music and culture through deejaying, live music, event promotion and music production. Driven by the record collection of his family, by the age of 3, music became Joshua’s favourite thing to do and see and by the age of 9, Joshua had begun deejaying and playing drums and piano. In the years following, Joshua continued to refine his skills and also created his own design, A/V and event production company Avalanche Productions in 2012.

His music selection, versatility, mixing and knowledge began getting attention from hearts around Toronto including industry heavy hitters such as Jones and Jones Productions, which led to his premiere on JAMBANA One World Festival at the tender age of 15. He has shared stages with many international artists and deejays including Shabba Ranks, Yellowman, and Marcia Griffiths to name a few. Lucas’ career has not been limited to just the Reggae community as he has spread his talents to the soca scene through Jamaal Magloire’s Toronto Revellers Mas Band, corporate events for companies such Bell Canada, Revera Living and CIBC, weddings and private events, and several school events for a variety of school boards. Today, Joshua continues to preserve and promote Reggae culture through his own event “Skankin’ Sweet: The Spirit of Reggae Music”, as well as a soca and throwback party “Carnival Inception” and “416 & Park”. Throughout the COVID19 pandemic, Joshua has expanded his endeavours to livestreaming through the Twitch platform and soundclash culture through the newly organized National Soundclash League.

16. Rachael-Lea - Real Talk

52m · Published 15 Oct 04:00

Guest: Rachael-Lea

Theme: Real Talk

Host(s): Kurt Henry & Asha Lapps

Rachael-Lea

I'm an Artsy Farsty Toronto Girl, who has a creative brain that never shuts off. Like EVER! Why Real Talk Candles? I suppose it was one of those things that you stumble across.

About a year ago, I was decked in the face by a complete stranger. Just standing there waiting for an Uber. "Why the hell me!" I thought. And like most women, we just figure, "ah, it's no big deal. I'll get over it!" Well, it wasn't that easy. Getting more and more afraid to walk freely in public, I took to my candle making as a way to avoid the building anxiety. It was the one thing, I knew, would bring me peace.

I'm also a writer, a playwright, and I hosted a Facebook show called "Real Talk with Rachael-Lea" for two years. Well known by my followers as being "unfiltered", I took my love of Real Talk and controversial conversation and slapped them on my candles. And so "Real Talk Candles" was born.

The goal of Real Talk Candles is more than just a scented candle. It's a statement. It's the kind of candle that causes conversations. Some funny, and some heartwarming. But always REAL.

Each one of these candles is hand-poured with love, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

I truly hope you enjoy these candles as much as I loved making them. May they shine light on your day, and give you a little laughter in your life.

Love and Light,

Rachael-Lea

11. All in One Health and Fitness - Carlo Celotti & Joe DiMarino

1h 0m · Published 13 Aug 04:00

Guest: Carlo Celotti & Joe DiMarino

Theme: All in One Health and Fitness

Host: Kurt Henry

Carlo Celotti

Carlo is a holistic nutritionist as well as a CrossFit Trainer, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist under the National Strength and Conditioning Association and CHEK Practitioner, giving him experience to work in the areas of nutrition and lifestyle management, group classes, human performance and corrective exercise.

He has represented Canada internationally as an Olympic distance triathlete in the World Triathlon Championships and has a widely varied athletic past.

Carlo works with world class, university and high school athletes as well as with the general population to help them reach their goals in a safe and effective manner. Carlo has been in the fitness industry for over 23 years and a student of it for even longer, having spent time learning from world renowned experts in the field.  His passion for education has given him a unique mix of skills and knowledge, which allows him to provide a wide range of services to help people towards various goals. He believes in building a strong foundation in the basics of movement in order to advance with a reduced risk of injury and greater efficiency.

Joe DiMarino

Joe has been training since he was 16years old, working on building strength, powerlifting and anything challenging. He found CrossFit in 2009 when he did a scaled version of Fight Gone Bad. After that moment, he swore he would never do CrossFit again, until of course he realized he was completely hooked. Everyday ordinary workouts turned into focused training at movements and exercises he was not accustomed too. Olympic lifting, running, gymnastics, and mobility are all challenging for Joe as they demonstrate his weaknesses.

This humbling aspect of CrossFit has helped Joe anchor himself with goals and targets on what to achieve year after year. ”Learn, Fail, Grow, Repeat” is the attitude that keeps Joe in CrossFit for the long haul. Joe surrounds himself with like minded people at AIO in a nurturing atmosphere that keeps him motivated to continue to push forward.

Joe finds CrossFit helps him handle the day to day stress, improve his performance and gives him the energy he needs to play with his two young beautiful daughters.

Guest: Chris Smalling

Theme: Mentoring Has A Ripple Effect

Host: Kurt Henry

Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling is a son, a father, a husband, a brother, a uncle, a nephew and a mentor. Chris Smalling grew up in the Galloway community and fell in love with the game of basketball as soon as he was introduced to it.  As one of six children in the Smalling household, it was difficult for his parents to afford Rep league basketball. As a result, he was unable to join their community team, The Galloway Lancers. He met a lady by the name of Martha Smith who paid his league fees and gave him the opportunity to volunteer at the community centre as a way of paying it forward. Chris Smalling was extremely grateful and vowed that as he got older, he would always give back to his community. Since the age of 16, Smalling has worked in various neighbourhoods throughout Scarborough providing opportunities for youth to participate in athletic activities.

In 2005 he started the Advantage Basketball was founded on the principles of giving back to the community and creating sustainable basketball programs for families in need. Since 2005 Advantage Basketball has helped over 150 student-athletes receive scholarships to play at various institutions such as NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division 1 Division II, Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) levels. Some of our student-athletes have gone on and received their Bachelor and Master’s degrees. Advantage Basketball has proven that their philosophy works and it’s helped to change the narrative of so many young people’s lives. Part of the advantage program is giving back or paying it forward, so many of our former athletes continue to give back to the program by impacting the lives of many young people.

In 2011 Chris Smalling was recognized by the OBA (Ontario Basketball Association) who nominated him for the prestigious Syl Apps award, he went up against over 20,000 other volunteers and mentors and won. The award was presented by Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport Margarett Best.

Chris now holds a position as the Director of Men’s basketball at J. Addison and continues to impact the lives of young people throughout the GTA.

He is most proud of the relationship he has built over the last 25 years and the lives he has impacted

38m · Published 16 Jul 04:00

Guest: Colleen Montague

Theme: Finding Hidden Gems

Host: Kurt Henry & Asha Lapps

Colleen Montague

Colleen Montague, Co-Founder of Moissy Fine Jewellery.

Colleen’s love for jewellery inspired a search that would meet her own needs. During this search she came across Moissanite gemstones, which are absolutely beautiful, durable, super refractive, and affordable . Surprisingly, Moissanite was not easy to find and often not available at Colleen’s local jewellery stores. She also had difficulty finding jewellers that worked with the gemstone. It was at that time she realized there was an untapped opportunity.

Moissanite Gemstones are seeing an upward trend in interest with companies like Moissy Fine Jewellery showcasing their brilliance as a diamond alternative. Moissy Fine Jewellery is the first brick and mortar store of its kind, with locations in Canada and USA.
