28: Understanding Food From Soil To Stomach with Matthew Evans Author of SOIL

1h 7m · Published 08 Feb 20:17

Have you enjoyed the sweet taste of homegrown strawberries and asparagus? Or do you prefer the robustness of tomatoes and cucumbers? Well, it’s time to appreciate healthy soil that provides nutrients for all those tasty treats.

A handful of soil is filled with a complex system of microbes, insects, plant roots, worms, and microbes. Healthy soil is alive! To produce a great crop, we need to create conditions where our plants can grow their best. An ecosystem that uses waste products from plants and animals as food for other creatures, an ecosystem-based on relationships that feed each other...soils should be alive with earthworms, microorganisms, bugs and with a considerable amount of organic matter—dead plant material.” all providing an interchangeable cycle of life beneath us.

Who is Matthew Evans?

Matthew Evans, Tasmanian chef, farmer, food writer, and broadcaster is the author of over a dozen books on food. His latest is called SOIL, a hymn to the remarkable and underappreciated bit of Earth that gifts us life.

27: Why Encouraging Kids To Connect With Nature is Becoming More Important Than Ever with Asher Cloran

38m · Published 01 Feb 20:17

Children mainly have little chance to discover that there is a life that exists under the surface of the soil because children are not being taught enough about soil life in schools.

They are only aware of the life above the ground than underneath it. This leads to a serious lack of interest of our younger generation towards their surrounding environment.

Some kids (especially the younger generation) nowadays prefer visual information instead of written information. Their form of understanding life comes through observation more than through text.

But, not all hope is lost! There are ways to combat this serious issue.

By educating younger generations on the importance of healthy soils, we can ensure our soils continue to be a valuable resource for generations to come.

Who is Asher Cloran?

Asher Cloran is a health, nature, and education entrepreneur who leads the company Life Rocks - a science education company aimed at connecting children to the magic of nature through discovery, interactivity, science, and art.

Asher educates adults on working with Nature to create a better home, classroom, and family and creates resources with his teams like illustrated books, board games, and more to help ignite a passion for Nature in the younger generations.

26: Making Soil Sexy - Feed The Soils, Feed The World with Peter Critch

42m · Published 25 Jan 20:17

As farmers or home gardeners, both have the desire to have their own compost pit but there are various worm culture methods using castings that may not be safe for consumption, and of course the time it takes for worm bins to start generating! Most importantly, we want our own vermicompost environment without needing to worry about safe practices or slow growth.

Regardless of whether you are interested in growing organic vegetables for your own backyard garden or simply want to help cut down on the amount of food sent to landfills, it is always good to know that there are communities or organizations that you can reach out to help you in your composting journey.

----------

Who is Peter Critch?

Peter is the youngest co-founder of Subpod. His vision is to transform organic waste into nutrient-dense food through a circular economy.

He believes that the problem of organic waste is the solution to improving global well-being, and the missing link is intelligent composting.

By understanding the biological processes of nature, Peter believes systems can be created that regenerate our economies, environment, and wellbeing. The circular economy starts when we begin to see our global problems as global solutions.

24: To Certify or NOT To Certify That is The Million Dollar Regenerative Questions with Will Elrick

55m · Published 28 Dec 20:17

Despite the growing popularity of organic foods and products, many consumers are still not aware of the benefits and downsides.

The word ‘organic’ is now being used as a buzzword to sell all sorts of products. The label cannot be taken at face value. Consumers should do their own research to ensure that the product actually is what it claims to be.

Data on the organic sector is not readily available and it is important to have as much information as possible in order to make better decisions.

The only way to find out whether something is good or bad for you is if we have access to enough data and statistics.

Who is Will Elrick?

Erick has been involved with Agroecology and nature-based solutions for around ten years. Working and also training on an Agroecological farm in Albury, southern NSW. During that time, I did Agroecology at Charles Sturt University, which later life happened, and I had to move to Northern NSW.

He completed a Bachelor of Science with Honours. It was a social study based on the role certification has played in the Organic industry and what the Regen can learn.

22: Farming Together: The Power of Change Comes From People Working Towards a Common Goal and Vision with Lorraine Gordon

48m · Published 14 Dec 20:17

A shift in the way we farm is vital to ensure our survival. We must begin to foster a regenerative agricultural system that will produce more food while sequestering carbon and capturing water. In addition, we need to embrace practices that replenish soil fertility, retain nutrients, and protect our waterways. This will provide increased resilience of landscapes and communities

Regenerative agriculture offers a solution to different farming practices. Farmers are key to creating a sustainable future. With enough support and collaboration from other people they can change the system and create resilient farms that can stand the test of time.

Working together and empowering farmers aims to inspire them through knowledge sharing and skills development, so they can improve their business while improving the environment. Working together means they have more power to achieve what's important to each individual farm or in the community.

Who is Lorraine Gordon?

Lorraine Gordon is a beef producer from Ebor in NSW. She has had an extensive career in agricultural leadership. She is a former NSW Rural Woman of the Year and CEO of Regional Development Australia (RDA) Mid North Coast.

20: Stop Killing and Start Healing the Landscape by Having a Regenerative Mindset with Charlie Arnott

47m · Published 30 Nov 20:17

The principles and practices of biodynamic farming are approaches that can be applied anywhere food is grown. With thoughtful adaptation to scale, landscape, climate, and culture, farmers everywhere will benefit from these simple yet profound concepts.

Knowledge combined with experience, and curiosity can create a sense of understanding and discovery. The more we make ourselves knowledgeable, the more we shift our way of thinking to something more beneficial

Who is Charlie Arnott?

Charlie is an award-winning grazier from Boorowa, New South Wales, Australia, an educator and passionate advocate for Regenerative Farming practices. His family business has developed under Charlie’s guidance from a ‘conventional’, industrial high input mixed enterprise farm working against Nature to a Biodynamically principled holistically managed farm partnering with Nature.

Charlie started his Regenerative Farming journey 15 years ago. Previously he and his family had been farming conventionally on their 5,000-hectare property “Hanaminno” for over 35 years, in an industrial high input/ high output farming business model, heavily reliant on pesticides, herbicides, and man-made fertilisers.

After a series of epiphanies and through education Charlie found the Regenerative Agriculture movement, a movement that reflected his instinctive connection to the land and his ethos of producing quality food for his family and the world.

Today, Hanaminno is managed using organic, biodynamic and holistic grazing principles, and produces beef, lamb, and pigs, pasture-raised on 100% native and exotic species, raised sympathetically within the landscape and the resources it provides, proactively marketing products direct to their clients, focusing on providing clean healthy nutritiously dense food direct to butcher and families.

The animals are handled in a ‘low-stress stock’ fashion, considerate of their individual and mob behaviour; they are 100% chemical-free and are not treated with any hormones, vaccines, or drenches.

Charlie believes the decision to move away from trying to get nature to do what man wants, and instead of learning how best to collaborate with nature, is key to not only a prosperous farming business but also to a farmer’s health, consumer health, and the land’s health. The business is not certified organic, nor Biodynamic, however, prefers being known as ‘Certified by Community’, given the transparency and openness to the public and clients under which the farm operates. Clients are considered ‘co-producers as they play a vital role in guiding the production of food through their feedback and connection with the farm.

Charlie and his team host and facilitate 2-day workshops at Hanaminno and across Eastern Australia, teaching farmers, gardeners, and families the principle and practices of Biodynamics, and hold open community preparation making events on farm to foster the skills and experience for farmers to create a relationship with their landscape, and be self-reliant.

Charlie considers himself and his team sunshine and water harvesters, soil builders, pasture and animal nurturers, change facilitators, educators, community supporters, and Nature partners. With a focus on putting the ‘culture’ back into Agri-culture. Charlie has received several agricultural industry awards for leadership, resource management, and conservation, more recently the prestigious Bob Hawke National Landcare Award 2018. The award acknowledges a person who has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to caring for the land, champions better practices, and gives their time to share knowledge with others.
