8: It's all about building humus and micro and macro aggregates to optimize soil functions and reverse climate change with Christos Miliotis

41m · Published 07 Sep 21:17

Who is Dr. Christos Miliotis?

Dr. Christos has been researching for 17 years methods to draw down greenhouse gases from the sky to soil with a special focus on the role of microbes to build the soil carbon sponge and draw in more water vapour from the atmosphere and store it in the soil.

The focus is on reimagining greenhouse gases as resources where there is too much of a good thing in the wrong place and through plants and microbes to transfer too, much of a good thing in the right place - THE SOIL.

Christos is a Soil and Gut health consultant as the two are inextricably linked.

5: Electrical Production in Soils and Ongoing Effects with Ewan Campbell

42m · Published 16 Aug 21:17

Who is Ewan Campbell?

Ewan is a Farmer researcher who discovered the ability to increase electricity in the soil and its effects on biology nutrient uptake and production.

Whilst growing up and farming on the peat land they were continually
challenging the boundaries of what was possible. There was no rule book
because very few had taken a peat swamp covered in scrub and turned it into a productive beef and sheep farm and then converted that to a dairy farm.

When he started farming on his own account his efforts to find people who could explain what, why and how things work on the farm and its soils usually left him with just a blank look. He was not deterred and his continued investigations were not in vain because they led him to be trained in soil agronomy, animal nutrition and environmental management with Brookside Laboratories. This unique opportunity gave him the ability to test, measure and give meaning to what they observed on the farm. When this knowledge was combined with the study of research papers and books from agricultural experts in biology, chemistry and physics a picture developed of how soils function in a productive manner. He want to pass his knowledge and experiences on.

4: Soil carbon and biodiversity are important for soil health, but also increase profitability - Digging Deeper with Sam Duncan & Florian Ruhnke

54m · Published 15 Aug 21:17

Who Is Sam Duncan?

Sam Duncan founded FarmLab in 2016 after serving in the Royal Australian Air Force as a logistics officer. Following tours to Africa and the Middle East, Sam saw the need to support our adaptation to climate change. This led him to the hypothesis that if farmers had better soil data then they would be able to better manage soil carbon. In the quest to improve access to better soil data, he developed FarmLab, which at the time was a simple mobile app for agronomists and consultants to help collect and submit soil samples to a soil testing lab for analysis.

Since then, FarmLab have developed out their agronomy and project management software to help farmers and agronomists better manage and share agronomic insights and data. More recently the focus has been on helping farmers understand and enter soil carbon offset projects under the Australian Clean Energy Regulator. The first step in this was the development of a Soil Carbon Offset Report (SCOR), pulling together a range of technologies from partners at CSIRO and CIBO Labs to help farmers assess and understand soil carbon across the landscape – and make an informed decision about whether or not they would benefit from entering a soil carbon project.

FarmLab is continuing to help consultants and farmers maximise profitability by optimising nutrient application and supporting better soil management.
