Episode 143 - How To Change The Way You Think About Assessment

27m · Published 29 Jul 10:00

When you think about how to assess students what might be the first thing that comes to mind.
Tests..
Projects..

The tools we use to assess these tasks often include a marking scheme or a rubric.

But what if the tests and projects were simply the tools we used to assess the skills students demonstrated.

And...the rubrics, learning goals, success criteria were not based on the product produced by the skills demonstrated.

This would mean that the projects we designed and assigned and the tests that we developed wouldn't need to be the same for each student, nor would we need to make a new rubric for every iteration of what our students made.

This is why I want you to look differently at assessment.

It's not the task or project that we make the rubric for it's the skills.

EP 139: How I Change the Way I Make my Long Range Plans

30m · Published 08 Jul 09:00

When I first started looking at making my long-range plans or just trying to figure out what I needed to teach. I treated the curriculum standards like a checklist.

This checklist led me to feel overwhelmed and always feeling like I was never going to get everything done.

I hated that feeling.

So I changed the way I looking at planning what I was going to teach when and I will never look back.

EP 136: Get Kids Engaged by Keeping Your Digital Learning Tasks Fresh

17m · Published 28 May 10:00

I don't know about your but something tells me that I will need to be changing a few things up next week.
- Students are less engaged
- Parents are returning to work
- The weather is hard to avoid - we all would rather be outside.

So I have a plan...

I am making a month-long calendar of fun and engaging ideas that kids can do at their own pace while still covering concepts of the curriculum. I want to share with you my plan on what I want to do including different trends, tools, and projects that will hopefully boost engagement and keep kids learning.

EP 135: How to Use Synchronous (Live) Learning in your Digital Classroom

42m · Published 22 May 07:46

The pressure is on and there is an increased pressure being placed on teachers to provide synchronous learning.

Never heard that word before?

That's because the better way to describe this overly complicated term is live teaching.

Just the thought of live teaching makes so many teachers nervous and rightly so. While there are advantages there are also some major concerns about privacy, access, and equity.

Despite these objections, it looks like synchronous learning is becoming more and more the expectation of teachers these days. From parents, admin, and the government.

So I wanted to talk about it.

In this live video, we broke down the advantages and disadvantages as well as the tools and equipment you can use to help you set your self up for success.
