Leadership in Education

32m · Published 05 Jun 00:49

Darren Cox is the school Principal for St Philips Christian school based in Cessnock, New South Wales

In his LinkedIn profile, Darren refers to himself as a motivational speaker, educational influencer, and a strategic change manager!

He was also in the top 5 for Principal of the year in 2019

Apart from his extensive experience in education, Darren has extensive experience in podcasting, video shoots and is regularly requested to speak on stage with a range of educational and other organisations.  When you meet and connect with Darren, you’ll understand why

Facilitating a podcast with Darren was an absolute pleasure.  He made my job very easy

Darren had started to prepare his school for ‘flexible education’ quite some time before the recent COVID incident.  So, during the recent lockdown his school was more than prepared, and his staff and students thrived in their own individual virtual environments.

Right now, Darren is preparing the school for the future.  This looks like a blended system of classroom/synchronous virtual/asynchronous training to allow for the best education opportunity.  The schools’ students and their futures

In the podcast we covered:

  1. Leadership – leading the teaching-learning
  2. Well-being
  3. Communication

If you want more information about Darren’s blended education process feel free to reach out to him on LinkedIn.

Leading in Times of Crisis in Healthcare

43m · Published 14 Apr 08:21

I had recently Stephanie Bowman and Reta Clyde as guests on one of the most impactful [and timely!] podcasts in the series to date!

HCA Healthcare [www.hcahealtcare.com] was founded in the USA in 1968. They have 280,000 staff with hospital facilities in 20 states. The organisation is committed to the care and improvement of human life.

Stephanie Bowman is the Director of Organisational Development, and Reta Clyde is the National Group Senior Leadership Training Specialist.

HCA Healthcare have been a VitalSmarts customer for more than 10 years. With 9500 Charge Nurses alone, the task of training and developing the organisation is massive!

HCA invest well in the people. A big part of Stephanie’s and Reta’s roles is to use Crucial Conversations training to give the people a framework and a vernacular - to help humanise people as well as conversations!

Their ongoing work in developing people at all levels within the organisation continues to pay real dividends.

They witness their teams across the organisation having real confidence in their leaders, and more importantly also in their senior executives. In the current crisis, their leaders are all seen moreso than ever to be doing the right thing!

Thanks for joining us and we hope you enjoyed learning about the power of being productive on purpose. If you enjoyed please leave us a review on iTunes.

High Impact Teams

30m · Published 28 Jan 00:34

I had a high energy and very engaging chat with Scott Robley from VitalSmarts USA.

Scott is a speaker, Trainer, Coach, and Client Solutions Engineer at VitalSmarts. We met with Scott at the recent VitalSmarts global conference where he presented the 40/20/40 model for high impact learning, based upon model developed by Robert O. Brinkerhoff

This podcast is all about how to maximise your training ROI and ROE by preparing well, high engagement delivery, followed by implementation.

The skills are based on more than 30 years of research, strongly evidence-based and well-grounded in the fundamentals of human behaviour – and completely counterintuitive! Whilst the two day Crucial Conversations training is very comprehensive, there is much more to be done to embed the skills and create a common language around performance and accountability

Inside this episode you’ll learn:

  1. To always start with ‘Why’
  2. The value of sponsorship and senior executive engagement
  3. To maximise training always have their ‘EAR’
  4. How to ‘share the music’ and create ‘opportunities to dance’
  5. Why high impact learning creates high performance cultures

Thanks for joining us and we hope you enjoy learning how to significantly improve your training delivery through a formalised embedding system. How to create and sustain a common language around performance and accountability. If you enjoyed please leave us a review on iTunes.

Leadership and Vulnerability

33m · Published 06 Jan 03:39

I had a very engaging conversation with Anna Ranaldo. Anna is a Brene Brown Thought leader as well is a certified ‘Dare to Lead’ facilitator. She is currently working extensively with corporations, organisations, education etc across Australia and New Zealand.  Anna has an extensive organisational development/HR background across global organisations like Santos, PWC and Shell. Her specialty is helping organisations to navigate change. Anna is also a certified Crucial Conversations trainer

I loved how Anna weaves in her extensive Crucial Conversations experience around her work in helping leaders to create psychological safety. She referred to trust as the bedrock of true vulnerability

Anna’s work around ‘Dare to Lead’ is currently helping leaders in all industries to not only ‘show up’ as the leaders they should be, but also how to really ‘lean in when situations get tough when they need to be powerful, not powerless’

Inside this episode you’ll learn about:

  1. Vulnerability and why is it an accurate measure of change
  2. why ‘clear is kind ‘and what that looks like
  3. Enabling high-quality trust
  4. How creating safety is pivotal to vulnerability
  5. Why leaders need to remove their ‘armour’ and ‘lean in’ to tough situations

I had great discussion with Terry Terranova who is the Head of Leadership and Capability at Newcrest Mining Company. Newcrest is one of the world’s largest gold mining companies, with mining sites in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and also Africa.

Since 2015, Newcrest have been building upon their ‘cultural’ safety program with one primary objective in mind - Everybody going home safe and healthy every day

With all the improvements in safe work practices over the last 30 years, accidents occur not so much because of a lack of awareness and training, but still primarily because of a culture of silence!

Inside this episode you’ll learn

  1. The 3 pillars of the NewSafe safety strategy
  2. Why all the current safety initiatives were now effective
  3. The power of developing stories and themes
  4. The process of creating leaders, mentors and coaches
