Episode 9: Helpful Advice for Managing Depression from Some of My Friends

27m · Published 21 May 16:22
In this week's episode, Jen shares her experiences with depression--and those of some of her friends--in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month. This week, I'm talking about some of the causes of depression and, most importantly, some tangible tips to help protect yourself from the risk of developing depression or how to move through it if that's where you find yourself right now. Some of my favorite parts of this podcast are focusing on relationships and things that bring us joy. I love creating a community around growth, even and especially when it feels difficult. To be a highly sensitive person, a person who has dealt with depression or anxiety or both, or someone who wants to grow but isn't sure how to make it happen -- these are all really emotional experiences. That's why I love sharing the hearts & stories of other people who get it, who have been there and can offer tangible advice for leaning into your authenticity, trusting what you want, and taking care of yourself. Even though today's episode is formally about depression, we could also say that it's about taking care of yourself & loving yourself. Every wise piece of advice that Melissa, Kelly, Tori, and Madalyn shared remind us to love ourselves, take care of ourselves, and do whatever it takes to find that peace & joy again. That could look like more time outside, making the bed, calling a friend to hang out, going to a fun class, reading a book instead of scrolling on Instagram, or calling a therapist if you need extra support. I hope you feel loved. I, for one, am so glad you're here. You may have a tremendous capacity for sorrow and probably sometimes feel some incredible pain. But you also have the same capacity for joy and love -- and the world needs more of those things. I hope you'll reach out to me and share if any tips helped you in this episode--or if there is any way I can support you. Episode 7: How to feel like you belong after an entire lifetime of feeling like you don't fit in (or at least how Jen's learning to do it)

44m · Published 29 Apr 01:04

In this episode, Jen talks about her journey toward believing that she belongs in the places she wants to be in her life after an entire lifetime of... well, not.

"I just want to fit in. I want to feel like I belong, so I need to hide who I am to do that."

During an EFT tapping exercise this past week, these words rocked Jen to the core when she realized how much they had been guiding her life & beliefs.

Jen (like many people) has believed that she wouldn't feel like she fit in if she showed up fully as herself.

But, the truth is that hiding actually makes it harder to feel like we belong because we're keeping everyone at arm's length--maybe even ourselves sometimes.

This podcast episode is for you if you can relate to a core fear or belief of not belonging. As Jen shares her story, hopefully, you will be inspired to think of:

  • Where you've felt like you don't belong
  • When you've felt like you did belong
  • Where you want to belong
  • How to give yourself permission to belong with YOU & be your truest self

Many of life's circumstances can make you feel like an outsider or that you don't belong. But, the most important thing is that you're staying true to yourself.

Can you feel like you belong anywhere else if you don't belong with or to yourself first? In Braving the Wilderness, Brene Brown talks about Maya Angelou's quote: "You are only free when you realize you belong no place—you belong every place—no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great."

Staying true to yourself will be scary sometimes, and sometimes it requires sacrifice, or you experience loss. However, the reward of peace, joy, and fulfillment when you listen to your inner voice and choose not to be moved--well, that's everything. That's worth it all.

Will you dare to show up and be seen, to choose to belong when you're with yourself, so whatever room you walk into, you can have the confidence that you belong there?

If you plan to, let us know how! And share this episode with the first friend you think of when listening. Thanks for helping spread the word! :)

Episode 6: Joyologist & Potential Doula Megs Malloy on Self-Trust, Worthiness, and Finding Joy

58m · Published 21 Apr 17:42
In this episode, my favorite Joyologist & Potential Doula, Meghan Calhoun, aka Megs Malloy, talks about her infamous Power Up, a 10-minute exercise of breathing, gratitude, and celebration that is designed to help busy working moms (and basically anyone willing to try it!) reset their nervous systems. With her special gift of bringing joy to others (and helping them learn to bring it to themselves), Megs shares lots of creative inspiration to bring laughter and send heart-shaped vibes into the world. In this episode, she also shares her incredible wisdom around trusting yourself, listening to your intuition, and realizing your inherent worthiness. There are so many nuggets here for listeners who feel like they are on the mommy hamster wheel or want to connect more deeply with themselves. Megs has a super fun podcast called "Don't Just Manifest - Megafest!" and it's available anywhere you listen to podcasts. She also has a nutrition mentoring program called Nutrition as Self Care. And soon, she will be releasing her new course called Slow Down Time for moms who feel like their kids are growing up too fast! (I would have loved that about 10 years ago - I'm so glad she's making it!) The links to all the ways to connect with Megs are below. We hope you enjoy today's show! Bio In 2019, Meghan Calhoun, aka Megs Malloy, was on the brink of working mom burnout. A demanding cemetery sales quota, two toddlers, a drive for perfection, and an inability to ask for help were making her feel like she was one bad day away from a mental breakdown. This stress forced Meghan to find a fast and effective way to cope (because ain't nobody got time for that). That's when she created the Power Up, a 10-minute daily practice of breathing, gratitude, and celebration, to cope with all the drama...from tearful daycare drop-offs to counseling families going through incredible grief and despair.    The cemetery job gave Meghan an ever-present reminder that life is short, and it fueled Meghan’s career change in 2022 to a Mindset Mentor and Joyologist. Nowadays, Meghan's mission is to help other working moms thrive in the mommy hamster wheel. She teaches women how to calm their nervous system, create awareness and intention, practice boundaries, and cultivate a Shero mindset. Her contagious energy and love of wigs and whoopee cushions inspire moms to notice the little magics in life, be present for moments with their children and remember the importance of always enjoying themselves. Episode 5: Navigating Grief, Parenting, and Life as a Highly Sensitive Person with Author & Artist Haddi Trebisovsky

1h 11m · Published 15 Apr 16:53

In this episode, talented author & artist Haddi Trebisovsky shares advice about parenting, facing emotional challenges as an HSP (highly sensitive person), and how writing has helped her face her fears & process her life's greatest challenges. When Haddi learned that she would have to deliver her fourth precious baby, Ansel, stillborn at 33 weeks, she made a choice to become as present as possible and process her emotions in real-time. She considered her writing to be like a life preserver to protect her from her grief.

With her new book, The Ansel Diary, Haddi hopes to share her own pain to help other grieving parents understand that they aren't alone--and to hopefully find hope in the grief process too. One of my favorite things Haddi talked to me about was the value of writing as a vulnerable and healthy way to process your emotions, even the ones that feel "bad." We can feel so afraid of our feelings & tell ourselves that our negative emotions mean there's something wrong with us. (We've both been there; if they had passed out t-shirts, we would be wearing them right now!)

The thing is, emotions are part of the human experience. And you may be highly sensitive, or maybe not - but, either way, your pain needs space & oxygen to heal. Sometimes, when you aren't ready to speak it, writing can be a much-needed reprieve from the weight of those emotions - or the rock in your chest Haddi mentioned in this episode.

Writer Bio Haddi Trebisovsky is an author and artist, born and raised in Minnesota. Her writing style has been described as honest, reflective, and raw. Her goal in writing is to raise empathy for others and grace for oneself. Following the death of her fourth child came the birth of her first self-published book, The Ansel Diary: Life After Stillbirth. Writing was the best coping tool she had, and it became her mission to find healing in her tragedy and offer light to others experiencing the loss of a dearly wanted baby. While grief may have been the launching point for her career as an author, Haddi has long been waiting to put her work into the world. For nearly seven years, she has been working on a Young Adult dystopian trilogy but having babies, providing foster care, poor health, the shock of grief, and coping with a pandemic have all slowed the process. However, each of these life experiences has provided an invaluable real-world experience to color the story even more vibrantly. She can't wait to get back to working with her beloved fictional characters. As an Elementary Education major, Haddi has also held a long-time dream of being a children’s book author and illustrator and has several stories stored in sketchbooks and hard drives, just waiting to be finished. Between caring for her three living children and spending time with her husband, James, Haddi continues writing and creating art and is looking forward to sharing that work with the world.

The Ansel Diary: Life After Stillbirth Through a collection of social media posts and personal diary entries, author Haddi Trebisovsky presents readers with an unfiltered look at a mother’s experience through stillbirth and the grief that follows. This is a story of loss, anger, depression, faith, and acceptance, though not always in that order. It's a journey through a deep valley of the human experience. The Ansel Diary will give readers a rare and intimate encounter that will surely spark reflection, empathy, a deeper understanding of loss, and ultimately - hope.

Episode 4: Singer-Songwriter-Seeker Amanda Hughey on Healing from Religious Trauma & Self-Acceptance

1h 0m · Published 07 Apr 14:56
In this episode, singer-songwriter Amanda Hughey explains her process of healing from spiritual abuse and embracing her voice again after life inside two separate cults. She discusses feeling like a large part of her youth was stolen by systems & people who demanded compliance with their personal Christian ideals. After being dismissed from Teen Mania Ministries, Amanda Hughey spent time at IHOP (the house of prayer, not pancakes) in Kansas City, where she underwent conversion therapy & spent months in a program designed to "fix her from homosexuality" because she really wanted to stay in ministry. Several years ago, she discovered the power of ayahuasca for healing and realized that the connection she had been searching for with God & the universe existed; it was just that the systems she had tried to find that connection within had harmed her in the process. After that experience, she wrote her first non-worship song since junior high. "Sure as Gold" was released in 2017, and it's a metaphor for the religious leaders who had demanded that she live *exactly* how they did; since then, she has been expressing her experiences vulnerably through her music, continuing to inspire others in the process. My favorite message from Amanda today was that it's okay to reclaim spaces within yourself & the world that others have tried to ruin for you--sometimes successfully. Keep seeking because what you're looking for is out there -- or within your own incredible being. Artist Bio Amanda Hughey is a Kansas City-based Singer-Songwriter with a vulnerable and classic Americana sound. Born and raised in an Evangelical setting in Southern California, she found herself at Bible School in Texas, conversion therapy in Kansas City, and "coming out" the other side; Amanda has been singing her way around the Midwest and Greater US for almost 15 years! She released her debut EP, "Sure As Gold," in January of 2017, and her latest release of "What That Means" is the first single off a totally stripped, acoustic EP. Keep your eyes open for some of Amanda's most vulnerable music yet, as she shares the depths of what she's been through in her songs. Be sure to follow on Spotify & social media platforms to keep up to date on the upcoming release. Connect with Amanda! Episode 3: Why Self-Validation is SO Valuable for Highly Sensitive People

20m · Published 31 Mar 17:39

Episode 2: Artist Brandon Clarke on Creating Something Meaningful in Art & Life

54m · Published 24 Mar 07:46
In this episode, Brandon Clarke of Brandon Clarke Designs explains how he intuitively creates artwork that inspires people to discover who they are in a new way. His unique techniques, like flipping the canvas around, inspire people to pull back their own stories, take an honest look, and find freedom in self-discovery. My favorite message from Brandon today is to do the hard work of finding out who you are & loving yourself fully; then, all the other good things in life will fall into place. Art Bio As a second-generation artist, Brandon inherited his artistic abilities from his grandmother. Brandon’s introduction to the art world was discovered in the back of his grandmother’s house, where he used to paint with her as a child. Although his style of painting differs from his grandmother, her teachings are ever present in his work. Thus, Brandon sought fit to share his interpretation of art and life through the lenses of abstract expression. Brandon’s work aims to spark awareness and surprise to his viewer to encounter a fundamental question: “Who are you, really?” The main concept of his art explores all the dimensions of the traditional canvas structure itself, with the intent to expose many hidden messages. In addition, his technique and material choice express literal and metaphorical characteristics on the canvas to imply the question, “Who are we really within the framework of our lives?”  Artist Statement  Brandon’s art focuses on the power of self-awareness through the juxtaposition of form and color on a canvas. He uses words, color, and compositions on a canvas to spark awareness and surprise in order to encounter a fundamental question: “Who are you, really?”  His work's physical and visual tension guides our ability to seek truth by honoring our brokenness. Although Brandon mostly works with acrylics, spray paint, and pastels, he also encompasses other mixed media into his work when needed. This helps his viewers see the many visual entry points and feel free to apply their experiences to the marks on the canvas. Brandon’s work expresses through material, color, and context the most important part of authenticity: transparency. Connect with Brandon!
