But my inner drive, my passion, kept me going. Jeremy was employee 110 at SpaceX. He was there at the beginning and part of the team that made it happen. Check out part one to hear the whole story This conversation is a deep dive into Jeremy’s thoughts on how our passion is the source of innovation and creativity. We cover the duality of passion How our passion separates us from the impact of AI

Shortcast : Community Building

12m · Published 20 Aug 22:52

The power of community building, our communities are the social glue that holds life together and is so underrated. Only when we cut off, do we notice the gap and then the loss. The podcast explores why community is essential, what happens when a community is broken, and why it is fundamental to human existence. Community is about the groups of people we identify with and support. The word community is a word that is used often in business and in politics but what does it mean? In the news, we often hear that that’s that phrase from the business community or the wider community.

Are you consciously community building?

We all make assumptions that we live in a community and yet the description of what that means is actually very loose. Could you put a name or word to yours? However, take your community access away and see what happens. Covid was a catalyst that both created and destroyed our communities. While it was not possible to meet in person, people stepped up and helped each other with food or shopping. However, that separation from our usual groups took its toll on so many.

Change is Coming

On Friday I was invited to a private viewing of a film set in the Findhorn Foundation. It is a well-established spiritual and ecovillage community. Brexit, Covid and then an arson attack have made the holding organisation insolvent, and huge change is coming. The film explored how difficult the journey has been, and opened the conversation about what is to come. I am on the perimeter of these changes and I am sure I will get to witness the best and the most difficult aspect of community leadership and decision-making as this story unfolds.

But it has made me think about my community and how I need to be more consciously building a network around me.

In this programme, I invite you to look at your circles and groups and how can you make them stronger. As Stephen Covey said we need to make time to sharpen the saw.

Jon Rennie : Deep Leadership

48m · Published 16 Aug 22:01

Deep leadership is a play on Jon’s history; he was serving officer aboard a nuclear submarine during the cold war.  Our podcast is about the transition between services and civic street. But it is also about the application of a leadership style.

My guess on the show today is John Rennie; he runs a successful business manufacturing critical components for electrical utilities. He’s also a podcast host and the author of three books on leadership. Jon was born to a family in Manchester, New Hampshire, just north of Boston. It is a blue-collar town, and people do not leave. He was born to young parents with equally young grandparents. His Grandfathers had both served in WW2 and talked fondly of military service.

While John was born to a loving family, life was abundant, but funds were limited, and while he father extolled the virtue of getting to college. That opportunity would only be possible with a scholarship. He was fascinated by engineering and submarines and expressed the idea of becoming a serving officer.

Nobody wants to be an officer on a submarine.

The high school career person was surprised but did his research and found an opportunity. The Navy had a scholarship degree program which led to officer training. He got accepted, did his four years of college, achieved an engineering degree, and entered the Navy as a commissioned officer.

Our conversation is a fascinating insight into the life of a nuclear submarine, but it’s more than that. It’s what John learned from his experience in the military and how we took that out into the business world.

I often hear from people who have served that transitioning between service life and Civic Street is very difficult. Jon did struggle for seven years, but he applied his navy principles to his work, and the rest is history. He led eight manufacturing businesses for three global companies for 22 years until he started his own business manufacturing company producing critical components for electrical utilities.  He has written three books on leadership and hosts the Deep Leadership podcast.

There are many lessons to be learned here. But the biggest challenge we discussed in detail is to start a business does not mean creating a job.

Shortcast : Be A Creator

10m · Published 13 Aug 17:49

Be a creator. Are you a creator or a consumer? What is the balance in your life between consumption and creation? It is not easy society is all about consumption. At first, it was things, and now it is information. In this show, we are looking at the balance between what we consume and what we produce and how a little creativity could change your life.

I was chatting about media consumption with my son. Now he is of the digital generation, where his phone constantly provides news, entertainment or background music. He is either programming games or playing them when he is not on the phone. That is his chosen path and career so not just a care free or fruitless pastime.  While conceding there was a lot of consuming, he pointed out that gaming is an interactive, social, and creative activity. Watching him play some of his team games, they do require a full range of interactive skills and a level of creativity. My point on this show is not the right of wrongs of gaming, but the expression of creativity has a more significant positive effect on our well-being than solo consumption. I suspect while there is creativity in the gaming world, I feel there is more creativity in the shared experience with his playing companions.

Community and being is groups,  I was singing this morning at the Park in Findhorn; there is something so magical when 40 people come together to sing in harmony. The creativity is in the shared sound and the community that it builds is way beyond listing to Spotify.

How can you be a creator?

When was the last time you picked up a pen or some colours and painted or did a drawing? There is something very soothing about creating patterns on a page and then adding some colour.  Have you ever wondered why adult colouring books are so popular?

On this show, I mentioned Andrea Nelson’s Art. You can find her here on YouTube

https://www.instagram.com/andrea.nelson.art/ Her little videos are a great inspiration; they are short.

Mark Kanty : Leave a Better World

1h 0m · Published 09 Aug 23:13

If you want to leave a better world, you need to be a leader. My guest on the podcast is convinced that it is the small business that will change the world. As the leader of an SME, you have the power to make a difference. This show is the first in a season on leadership, and we are looking at small businesses. What people get wrong and how they should start.   What is interesting about this week’s guest is that he has never held down a job in his life.

When Mark Kanty was seven, his father left a high-level corporate career and bought a marine business. His father was the role model that set him on a path for life. As a child, encouraged by his family, he had numerous little business projects. Upon completing high school, he went to college and did business studies, and on leaving, was faced with a choice.

“When I graduated, I saw everybody else lining 70 or 80 people deep to get these junior positions at companies, and I said, that’s just not for me.” He followed the family example and opened his own marine dealership, growing it into over $1 million in a few years, and then lost the lot as the economy turned.  He was able to close that business paying all of his debts. We hear about those mistakes.

It was about this time that he had a severe car accident that made him re-evaluate his life choices and consider what was important.

As a leader you can leave a better world

He went on to have numerous businesses and became a business coach at a time when coaching meant teaching football or sorting out your tennis serve. Mark’s entrepreneurial prowess spans over 40 years, where he’s created, launched, and sold numerous businesses in various industries. As a Business Strategy Coach and Consultant, he transitioned exclusively to online services in 2005 and has been thriving as an expert in the online coaching space ever since.

There are many lessons to be learned here. But the biggest challenge we discussed in detail is to start a business does not mean creating a job.

Shortcast : Time to Shift

11m · Published 06 Aug 20:41

It is your time to shift, when you put down a marker and decided everything will be different hereafter. On the show, we explore the idea of the shift through the window of my wife’s ordination as an interfaith minister. Two weeks ago on Saturday in a little theatre in Milton Keynes, 30 plus ordinands were publicly declaring their vows in front of family and friends. It was a deeply moving ceremony about love and compassion. An opportunity for these people to be recognised and seen for who they are, where they have come from and what they might become. This was their moment of shift and joy to behold it had the sense of a wedding but different, and words are so limiting when it comes to describing any of it. Life Is Not Measured By the Number of Breaths We Take, But By the Moments That Take Our Breath Away.    Vicki Corona,  That quote sums it up very well but even that is describing a moment and not saying what the feeling is. Very possibly because words cannot express.

In this show, we explore that event and how to go about finding a shift for yourself. What tools we can use to get to the point of shift and onward to the life that you want. My Wife is now Reverend Cheryl Harvey and I am delighted for her.

49m · Published 02 Aug 23:29

Five pillars of productivity, what if it were possible to be more productive that did not require pushing, rushing and fighting to keep up?

The conversation you are about to hear is taken from the event reasons and results.  Recorded between lockdowns in 2020, it was a journey from envisioning to implementing a project. We returned a few days ago after travelling south and being a tourist for a few weeks. There was the wife’s ordination and a family celebration, meeting new people and connecting with friends.

After loads of conversations, I was left with the feeling that people have great ideas, but the implementation always lets them down. Most of us (including myself because I have been there) will rush into a project and push like hell to get a result. Only to find that success does not follow.

Find Your Productivity Superpower

So what if there was a calmer, more sustainable way of getting things done? That is where the productivity mentor Louise Miller and five pillars of productivity can help Louise is the founder of Bettylou a productivity mentoring service, she has a gift for helping people out of overwhelm by helping them create a path way through.  Louise is good with chaos and says there nothing is more fulfilling than turning something muddled into something beautifully clear.

In this conversation you’ll discover… the Five pillars of productivity.

  • The unexpected first step to productivity greatness
  • Your productivity super-power and how to harness it
  • How to turn your big idea into inspired action
  • Powerful habits to get stuff done with less stress and more ease

The show is 45 minutes and it will leave you with some powerful tools to get control of the chaos.  Side Note: We returned to Scotland with a combination of Colds and Covid. Shortcast : Reading by Osmosis

10m · Published 30 Jul 22:42

Reading by osmosis is buying a book and having it on the shelf unread. It feels good to buy a book that looks like it will change your life. But unless we read it and implement the contents, nothing will change.

We all do it to some extent, PDF downloads!! How many do you have in that to-be-read folder?  Courses bought or events attended, did you do the work? On this show, we are looking at how to avoid reading by osmosis and setting a commitment to do the work. I have a lot of books on my shelves I have a lot of books in my Kindle, I have always enjoyed reading, and was the influence of various coaches over the years that have either suggested books. Or pointed out that the most successful people read a lot of books.

But we live in a world of reels and short-form content. The availability of podcasts and YouTube videos has changed how we consume or find information.  These platforms have given us direct access to information and reduced our need to look for or read books.

Is that really true, can I get everything from Youtube?

It’s ok if I’m looking for a particular bit of information, like how to tune the gears on your bike. A straightforward video is enough.

But the problem is when we try to go deeper unless we are taking notes or finding some way to retain that information, watching videos or listening to information is not the best way to learn or implement.

On this show, I will encourage you to find the book that will take you forward and give you some tools that help you stick to and implement something. Because unless we take action and change something nothing will change.

Join me on the show and discover how you might implement the book that could change your life.
