Janice Clyne : The Fermentation & Diet

56m · Published 19 Jul 16:55

As we take a few weeks out, I thought to re-share this episode from 2020 with Janice Clyne. Diet and food are always popular.

This week I am talking to Janice Clyne, The Fermentation Specialist.

We can all relate to food; it is an emotive subject and stirs memories, both good and some times not so good. Who remembers dreadful dinner dates or childhood associations? I have a horror story around sprouts that stopped me eating them for years, but for the most part, some of my best memories with friends, lovers or family are related to food and drink.

  Sharing A Passion

I am a foodie; cooking and sharing food is my thing. Food is never far from my mind, I know what I will be cooking on most days and I love to experiment. So when I first met Janice Clyne, it was with some excitement. Janice is a fermented food specialist. While most of us know our fermented drinks and or fermented flour (bread) there is a whole world of fermentation that is both fun and offers enormous benefit to our health.

I first came across Janice through the Change Your World Everyday facebook group. In Facebook, group engagement is often variable, but this week Janice had the Change Your World’ers sharing photos of food and exploring new possibilities. It was dynamic, and I was hooked. I could see a whole new area of taste and flavour possibilities opening before me.

Shortcast : Healthy Wanting

11m · Published 16 Jul 20:27

Healthy wanting, is it possible to be wanting something in such a way that it drives you forward towards success? For many wanting is about filling a void that cannot be filled from the outside. On this podcast we discover the problem with over wanted culture. It is growth for the sake of growth. How could we look at the driver of progress in a more positive way so it’s connected with who we are?

Society and business has turned into desires for products in the search for ever greater profit. It becomes growth for the sake of growth. Our politicians and media promise unlimited growth as a means of prosperity for all.  But it can put us on the treadmill. There have been more than enough podcast guests on the growth treadmill looking for more and more and finding themselves burned out in the process.

What if it was possible to reconnect yourself with your values and build your wants and desires from there?

Our conversation is about using your value systems accordingly, and using it in a healthy way to of fuel your desires.

Moira Ní Ghallachóir : Global Impact

39m · Published 12 Jul 20:58

We are taking an editing break for the rest of July while we recharge, plot, and plan our future world domination.  So I thought to share with you one of my favourite conversations from last year. With Moira Ní Ghallachóir a story of home coming and making a huge difference.  Talk about global impact. My guest on the show creates stories with her words and has captivated audiences worldwide with her powerful presentations.

But how that all began is one of those stories of the unexpected.

What does a girl do when some money arrives out of the blue just before her birthday? For my guest, that would normally have meant a party. But this year was different, it felt like there was a reason for this money to arrive.

Moira Ní Ghallachóir was born in Donegal but left to explore the world. She was living the London Life as a youth worker. From her Instagram feed, she was having a ball. But in reality, it was draining her soul, and there was a desire for something more.

When the money arrived with a birthday coming up, she saw it as a gift and packed a small bag, her journal and took the Eurostar to Paris.

Sitting in a cafe, with coffee, croissant and journal, mulling over her future – the phone rings. On the screen comes up the word ‘Home’. That is the moment that changed Moira’s life. It was the signal to go home to Ireland.

On returning to Donegal she saw the place with new eyes and wanted to share it. She told the story and became a one-woman tourist development agency.

Our conversation is about her journey from uninspired Youth Worker to Irish Tourism to Business Mentor and International Speaker.  And as she explains, success is reflected in the transformative experiences.

Shortcast : Living in the Story

14m · Published 09 Jul 22:04

We are all living in the story; it is what we do. I talk a lot about the stories and narratives that make up our lives. I’ve realised this is about living in the story of the outcome. On this show, we explore how our storytelling abilities can lead us to our goals or take us to that place of despair. We have to manage our storytelling to get what we want.

Most of the time, our actions at any moment are relative to the outcome we hold as a vision. But we are not conscious that we are doing it.

Here is me Living in the story

I love to cook for myself, my family, and my friends. When I begin the meal plan, I consider what the other people eating will enjoy and how they might react to the presentation of that food. I imagine them enjoying it. Last Monday I bought a new pair of running shoes, they were a gift for my birthday and are possibly the most expensive shoes I have ever bought. As I tested them in the shop, I imagined how it would feel to run a race, going fast and long while wearing these shoes. I got to test them on Saturday at the Forres Highland Games 10K, and they did not feel how I imagined they would. They did live up to my expectation.

That is the point we are always living in the outcome of the story we have created. Now that ability to tell ourselves a story and believe it is a powerful tool for getting the life we want. As long as it is well managed.  Focus on the bad stuff, which can also be a heavyweight in delivering the life we do not want because replaying and believing a lousy story will not lift the heart or fill the soul with joy.

Join me on the show and discover how you might use your stories to get what you want.

Osbert Lancaster : Leadership and sustainability

47m · Published 05 Jul 23:38

Leadership and sustainability, when change is on the menu, it requires leaders who are ready to create the vision and make the difficult decisions required to get there.

The world is constantly changing, but as someone now in his 60s, I have never seen this pace of change. Change is coming at us in almost every direction, and we must all step up to face it. Leadership on all levels is the answer.

Part 1 of Leadership and Sustainability

Our guest on the show is an expert in leadership and sustainability. Osbert Lancaster has been in the industry even before the word sustainability appeared in the business dictionary. Most of his early consultancy conversations involved a lot of explanations.        Our conversation explores his journey towards his chosen career. It begins with an unusual childhood, as much of his early life was spent travelling with his parents. They were social anthropologists living in various locations around the middle east. He was not aware at the time, but the experience gave him a window into a unique way of life.

Economic Development is a Sticking Plaster

When he was too old to travel, he did his time in a private boarding school as you do when your parents travel, and ultimately went on to university to study agriculture.

After twists and turns, he found himself in In economic development. It was while working in Poland in the 1980s that he realised economic development was about putting a sticking plaster on the failures of society and creating business opportunities out to other people’s misery.

That realisation led Osbert to explore the idea of sustainability and sustainable development and he has never looked back.

Shortcast : Transitions and Assimilation

9m · Published 02 Jul 21:45

Let’s talk about transitions and assimilation, that is the integration of all that we are and bringing it to the world as a contribution. In the podcast we are looking at transition and assimilation as part of our right of passage. The show is about how the move from 50s in to my 60s has been more than a birthday.

We return briefly to my ultra marathon experience and what I have leant from that journey.

I can do hard things, and the pain passes and there is much more

There is also the ritual I used to pass from 59 to 60 years old. How I ran thought the time of my birth 60 years back.

A week of Transitions and Assimilation

In truth I have been preparing for this turning 60 as a transition. I’ve been talking about it for a while in my podcast and in someone my posts. Some of that conversation is ongoing, as my wife is currently in training to become an interfaith minister. Our conversations often revolve around transitions and connecting with all that is that’s probably led me to this place.

In the first world, we have lost touch with what it means to pass from one stage to the next. To honour and celebrate that transition.  In the modern world we have lost touch with so much that makes living life expansive.

Most people see their success or contribution to the world as part of their career. There is so much focus on this idea that the career is where you shine.

Ultimately this is about learning to shine all of the time. It is about feeling confident in your skin and body. And seeing that your strengths and weaknesses are an equal part of who you are There are some things where I am crap.  I’ve never been particularly organised, I am dyslexic on many levels and have a terrible memory for names. There are more…

But I own those things. I don’t let my dyslexia stop me writing or publishing on social media. If there are errors and things that are wrong in something and someone doesn’t like it well that’s their problem not mine. And that is OK. That is not to say those errors don’t hurt becasue they do.

How Does My Journey Help You?

Remember as I say this all the time it’s your story. It has to be written, we have to create our own story. Mine is about the podcast. It is about the expansion of me and the expansion of people around me, it’s about how do we live a good life. What are the tools required for that. How can I help people find those tools and move forward. This is what it’s about for me, that is the exciting part of who I am and where I am at this time. I will embrace the fear and keep looking to expand through it. What would be a right of passage for you at your age and stage?

I have said before, “The Prize” is on the other side.  So I urge you to seek out an enduring adventure and push against something that offers resistance.  Something that makes you grow and feels like an achievement, it does not need to be a full-on physical challenge.

I am biased, as I think something enduringly physical is hard to beat.

But there are other options. My wife for example is physically challenged for her the challenge is about writing and making it public.  I believe she is very good check out the website https://simplibee.uk/  it is beautful.

Shortcast : Choose Your Challenge

12m · Published 25 Jun 17:46

Do you choose your challenge or let life throw them at you? The point is life throws things at us, it’s not meant to be a journey a unicorns and roses there are meant to be ups and downs a life of colour.

This Saturday, at 11 am, I started running in a 100-mile team race, it took us 18 hours I and I ran 28 miles with a few big hills. I thought it would be great, the truth was mixed but still great. On this show we are looking at how the media is driving the message of fear and how you can build your resilience to rise above it all. Because there is a certain power in taking charge and choosing the challenge.

We had 2 four-person teams and our job was to run 100 miles over a maximum of 24 hours, Running in pairs one from each team, it was about pacing each other and navigation. Th course was mixed terrain and easy to get lost. I have to say it was brutal I covered 28 miles over the 18 hours it took to complete the course, I got home at 5.30 am this morning made a bacon roll and went to bed.

I have been a zombie all day and it is now late afternoon and I wanted to get this podcast out my six which may not happen.

What did I learn from the experience? I can do hard things, and the pain passes  I put my needs first and took care of my body, I was clear with my teammate about what I needed. While I did the same for them.    Everyone reacts differently to challenges and when supported people are amazing.

So how can you bring the power of challenge into your life?
