Ep0080 "Being Unapologetic" - with Davide DiGiorgio

39m · Published 21 Jul 04:00

"You've waited your whole life, how much longer are you going to make the people who are awaiting the message only YOU can deliver... wait?"
Sooo many nuggets, sooo little time... this is the show you listen to when the chips are down, there's no heat in the house, no food in the fridge and you're questioning why on earth you became a professional speaker/entrepreneur/leader in the first place... Davide has a talent for seeing right into the soul of the thought leader and polishing the diamond in the rough.

Davide wrote "Being Unapologetic' as his own reminder that he was never going to go back to being apologetic - for anything. He had a double-whammy of being from a self-professed, apologetic Catholic-Canadian guilt-ridden culture and he just "got sick of it." After spending months outlining the book, he went on an 8-day cruise and wrote the whole book.

Ironically, Davide admits to apologizing to his editor, Patrick Snow, for dropping off his book "Being Unapologetic" for editing...

As one of the world's leading speaking experts, he's worked with thousands of on-purpose speakers, performers, executives, and leaders across multiple industries for more than 25 years.

Davide pushes his readers to ask the right questions, not the popular ones, in order to uncover your natural gifts. This book is LOADED with tools to take your game to the next level

Not only does "Being Unapologetic" deliver, so does his website. The blog is chock FULL of GREAT advice for speakers and professionals.

Ep0079 "Alter Ego Effect" - with Todd Herman

37m · Published 07 Jul 04:00

You can hear me taken a bit by surprise when Todd talks about what happened to him at 12. I had seen the Facebook post of how he had thought about taking his life at the tender age of 12... but for whatever reason, I didn't read on to see the WHY behind that. His courage and willingness to talk about how he moved past being sexually abused to help thousands of people improve their performance on and off the field is inspiring.
Not only does Todd share his personal stories, but he backs up his findings with scientific research behind our minds. Is there something to "fake it til you make it?" How do you "stay in your lane" and not stray into becoming something that you're really not? No matter if you're an athlete, entrepreneur or parent, you will come away with some gems in this interview.

Todd has spent 20+ years mentoring Olympic athletes, public figures, leaders and entrepreneurs, on peak performance and has built his own life based on one foundational principle: the people that win, whether they’re smart, ignorant, young or old, are the ones that can unlock their Heroic Self and display ALL of their capabilities on the field of play of life.

Ep0076 - "Reimagining Retail"- with Sandy Stein

27m · Published 26 May 04:00

An alarming article in the New York Times penned by Sapna Maheshwari, cites data from Coresight Research with a serious blow to brick and mortar retail:  "Less than halfway through April, American retailers have announced plans this year to shut 5,994 stores, exceeding the 5,854 announced in all of 2018." Is there REALLY any hope for retail? According to retail forecaster and author of "Retail Schmetail," Sandy Stein, it's a resounding YES - but maybe not in the way shoppers remember the experience dating from the 50s to the 90s.

"Sears has been on the longest store closing bankruptcy in the history of retail," Sandy quips. He also talks about stores that are winning like Target, with less inventory and more of a solutions-based shopping experience.

Who will win in the retail space? The entrepreneurs that are "Digital First retailers who realize their stores help build the traffic online. There's no longer a need to build hundreds of stores to create scale." Take a listen to Sandy and he'll give you renewed hope for small business startups looking to get into the retail space online.

Ep0074 - "Investors or Unicorns?" with Eric Egeland

34m · Published 28 Apr 04:00

I met Eric when pitching Vermont Chalky Paint at the Vermont Barn Pitch in my friends, Trish Sears and Steve Mason's barn. Eric came roaring in on a motorbike along with 15-20 other investors all with shiny BMWs glistening in the sun on a hot summer's day. I didn't win the first pitch, but I did win the second year and went onto the statewide competion. Eric was razor-sharp in helping me hone my messaging from Entrepreneur (Unicorn)  speak (I want this money because it's a REALLY cool idea...) to Investor Speak (It costs x to make this product, burn rate of 1-3 years, and ROI of $X in 3-5 years.) In other words, I wanted to exchange my Unicorn for Secretariat...

Eric offers great ideas for getting your head around focusing your company not only for investors, but more importantly, for YOUR ROI. A really valuable listen for those of us who like to manifest our dreams into tangible dollars and sense... (mis-spelling intended.)

P.S. My apologies for the recording being a bit sketchy - I promise, the content is SOLID. Eric even offers his contact info at the end. PLEASE take him up on his offer - it'll be time well spent.

Ep0073 - "Crossing Over to Evolve" with John Edward

41m · Published 14 Apr 04:00

When my mother died, I was obsessed with connecting with her in some capacity. I had one of her old lipsticks tucked in my purse and sometimes, I'd pull it out just so I had a scent or something she had actually touched. We had a psychic in our neighborhood that I visited when I first lost my mom. I reached for my wallet and found I only had $5 bucks on me. She gave me a hug and said, "No charge, honey - the sacred's not for sale."

That sentence has hung with me over the years and I wrestled with it - until this interview. I posed the question to psychic, best-selling author of numerous books and former host of "Crossing Over, Soo...Is the sacred for sale?

John Edward offers the best answer I've ever heard to this question. He offers comfort to thousands of people who suffer through the loss of a loved one and faces critics who accuse him of taking advantage of people at their most vulnerable time. He rolls with the punches with his rapid fire delivery and occasional impatience with those who think a step or two slower than he does. He talks about where he receives spiritual guidance when he feels lost (the answer may surprise you...) the power of valuing your talents, and the power of belief.

Ep0072 -"Speaking of Success" with Kevin Neff

52m · Published 31 Mar 04:00

In all the episodes I've had, I've yet to hear a guest talk about how easy it was to make their way to the top. In fact, many of them had their greatest epiphanies when staring down a bowl of Ramen noodles. So I faced Kevin Neff's new show, "Speaking of Success," with some trepidation. Is it going to be a sound bite of how Entrepreneur X took their company to $6B in 6 months? His answer is refreshing.

Some of his guests aren't even "famous" at all. Or some tell stories of how they've fallen from grace to build success from the ashes. The best revelations are toward the end when Kevin offers some self-reflection on how he defines success for himself.

On Branding:
You'll find many pearls in this episode in Kevin's notorious in-your-face rapid-fire delivery. How do you not only GRAB their attention but KEEP their
attention?

"Your brand should punch people in the face. You're not a grain of sand on the beach, you're a grain of sand on all the beaches of the world."

And thus begins our entry into the world of Kevin Makes Sense.com

How he met Mark Shulman
Kevin's no stranger to punching people in the face with his branding. An 8' tall banner attracted Mark Schulman - drummer for Pink, Beyonce, Cher, Billy Idol (among others,) to Kevin's booth at the National Speakers Association convention. The banner pictured an electric chair with
"Don't Be a Dead Brand Walking - Give Your Marketing a Jolt" emblazoned on the front. He got the gig. Kevin continues,"Your brand should speak for you even if you're not in the room."

His take on C-Suite Network CEO Jeffrey Hayzlett:
We talked about our mutual experience interviewing Jeffrey Hayzlett; yes, you sit up straighter in your seat and you'd better be quick on your feet; Jeffrey doesn't suffer fools. Only Kevin Neff would be able to boldly ask about the gift Jeffrey Hayzlett received from KISS Gene Simmons. Take a listen
to learn what it is (and yes, I laughed...)

When did Kevin know when he was successful?
It's easy to assume you gain success by garnering the spotlight, and grabbing it by results. For Kevin, there was a time where success was making it month-to-month. He talks about going from hero to zero overnight and went from 6 figures to nothing. This experience helped him re-define success,
"Success is doing biz w/ people you wanna work with, do work you enjoy doing and getting
results for clients and knowing they would refer and use us again." He still faults himself on
caring TOO much about what others think. "People wear failure like a lapel pin, but failure can sometimes be part of the process. It's what comes out of the failure -  Did you pick yourself up by the bootstraps?"

One and Done - do it right the first time.
We talked about setting plans in motion and dealing with doubt. "If this doesn't work, what's Plan B? There is no Plan B... Plan B means there's an iota of failure." For Kevin, he can't have a seed of doubt. He would be so distracted by that grain of sand of doubt, that it would take his time and focus away from Plan A. What you focus on grows - focus on doing it right the first time.
