Get richer teacher with Ola Kowalska

by Ola Kowalska

Welcome to the Get Richer Teacher Podcast. My name is Ola and I'll be your guide and mentor on your way to a profitable, sustainable, but most importantly, enjoyable language education business. And why would you care to do that? To build a business like that? Because there is literally no other way.
The language education market is in a bizarre state. Companies making millions in profit yet paying teachers peanuts. Native speakerism is still way too powerful. And finally, the students are bored of the same old formats and messaging telling them to speak like a native.
I'm here to shake things up. To educate and motivate a community of teachers who have the courage to build businesses and teach the language on their own terms, both solo or in their own language schools, and have a positive impact on their students and the world. Because teachers are superheroes. Let's claim it today!

Episode 4: the ONE thing that you need to master if you want to be successful in ELT

34m · Published 06 Sep 13:00

People assume that business is just business - it either works or it doesn't.

But there is so much more to it! And it all starts with your mindset and energy. If you're not energetically ready for success you will not be successful.

Mindset is a muscle - it can be worked on, flexed, exercised but people don't see it as a necessity. While in fact, it is absolutely inevitable if you really want to receive success, abundance, all the things you want and build your dream life.

Mindset starts with realising that it is A THING. It is important, it is necessary to admit that without being in the right frame of mind, even the best strategies, courses and other forms of support will not work!

And that's why I talk about working on your limiting beliefs so much! I believe the work on your business starts with you! There are so many of them for us, teachers,

1. Ideas about comparing yourself to others - ('So many people do it and they're great at it so I can't succeed' etc)
2. Ideas about trying to price your teaching services competitively in the market ('I can't charge more because people won't buy')
3. Ideas about your own worth and how much you're willing to invest in yourself (in terms of time and money) ('I can't spend that much on my development because I'm not 'ready')
4. The ideas about having to do everything on your own ('If I ask for help, it'll mean I'm not capable')

And many others. And the last one, especially, can be addressed NOW!

I'm now launching a brand new club for ELT entrepreneurs called ELTpreneurs! It's a membership for people who need accountability, support from other like-minded people, and ME as your mentor, regular training, your own membership area, and exclusive group, group coaching sessions, weekly Q&As, expert sessions, and many many more! Come and join us here:

Episode 3: What blocks you from making good money as a teacher (and how to change it!)

34m · Published 30 Aug 08:00

Teachers are poor.

Simple AF. That's just the reality, the way things are, the status quo.

BUT DOES IT HAVE TO BE?

I this episode,  I provide insight into why teachers are so undervalued and underpaid (plain guesses still because I genuinely DON'T KNOW). Everything speaks against that notion - teachers make the world a better place, they take years to qualify (usually), they have a mission, a vision, a deeper calling, and do their jobs selflessly. Why do they not get compensated for that?

You may have similar reflections to mine on this, but what's new in my perspective is that I understand how deeply rooted this problem is and I offer solutions and tips on how to get out of that crappy situation! Because the change starts in us, in our classrooms, and online Zoom rooms.

Because, in fact, the only people responsible for our shitty pay, is us.

Listen to the episode before you get outraged! Share your thoughts with me and let me know what you're going to do next to start making better money as a teacher!

Episode 2: Know what you want and stay positive - chatting with Maddie Boldero

37m · Published 23 Aug 09:00

Can you stand out in ELT by just being YOU? Of course, you can!

In this episode, I invited my ex-colleague-turned-friend and probably a twin sister in some other life, Maddie Boldero, for a chat. She is a ball of energy, just like me and kindly agreed to talk to me about her journey in the ELT world and what her biggest lessons have been so far.

Maddie has been in the industry since 2007 as a teacher, a manager, a teacher trainer who has always been able to recognise what she wants which proved a useful skill. Her extraordinary optimism is her personal magnet and she used it many times in the classroom and managerial experience as her leverage. She is also known for her professionalism, hard-working attitude and knowing what she really wants. She's now in the middle of another career pivot which she sees as an exciting opportunity. Fingers crossed for that, Maddie! You can follow Maddie's journey at @anotherbunchofacronyms on Instagram!

Make sure to listen till the very end where Maddie shares what she thinks it means to stand out in ELT and how you can achieve that!

WOO-HOO, what a chat! Perfect to lift your mood for sure! :)

Go on, give it a listen and let us both know your thoughts!

Episode 1: A rant about native speakerism

34m · Published 16 Aug 09:00

Picture this.

We're in a feedback session on a CELTA course, where I'm the tutor. I'm giving feedback to my trainee on how she's dealt with a pronunciation issue in her class (she made an obvious mistake). She looks at me with a lot of doubt in her eyes, at some point, she rolls her eyes and doesn't actually take any of my words seriously. Next time she makes the same mistake and uses the argument 'that's what we, native speakers, say'.

I'm a qualified teacher, an ex-manager in a language school, an ELT business owner, and a Cambridge-qualified teacher trainer. It doesn't matter.

Native speakerism and the debate about native vs non-native teachers is far from being over.

Unfortunately, people interpret the activism and support of non-native speakers as diminishing towards native speakers. That often comes from their own insecurities. But we must stop thinking that giving more attention or recognition to one group means taking it away from the other. A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD, anyone?

This episode touches on the problem's obvious aspects and adds my passionate voice (or a rant) to the discussion. I share stories, reflections, statistics, thoughts, and ACTION POINTS for all of us.

Episode 1: What non-native speakers in ELT and women have in common

34m · Published 16 Aug 09:00

Next time she makes the same mistake and uses the argument 'that's what we, native speakers, say'.

I'm a qualified teacher, ex-manager in a language school, ELT business owner, and a Cambridge-qualified teacher trainer. She doesn't care.

So if you're bored of the native versus non-native speakers in ELT debate then you may as well be bored of feminism. Because it's exactly the same. We still need to talk about it and we need our own activists. It's still extremely unequal.

Unfortunately, people interpret the activism and support of non-native speakers as diminishing towards native speakers. That often comes from their own insecurities. But we need to stop thinking that giving more attention or recognition to one group means taking it away from the other. LEVEL PLAYING FIELD, anyone?

This episode touches on the obvious aspects of the problem but I also wanted to add my own passionate voice to the discussion. I share stories, reflections, statistics, thoughts, and ACTION POINTS for all of us.

Give it a listen and let me know your thoughts. Have you ever been discriminated against as a non-native speaker? What do you do to level the playing field for yourself or for others?
