In this episode of the STEMEY Significant Figures Podcast, Dr. Jamie Spangler shares her research on protein engineering and expanding the possibilities in the field of protein therapeutics. She addresses how working at John Hopkins University has impacted her life and how the community there has a common goal. Dr. Spangler describes the work that her group at the Spangler Lab does, which includes engineering antibody-based molecules that reshape immune cell behavior for targeted treatment of infectious diseases. The Spangler lab implements a unique, structure-based engineering approach to elucidate the determinants of protein activity in order to inform therapeutic development.

Corrine Yap is currently in the mathematics Ph.D. program at Rutgers University doing research in probabilistic combinatorics. She received a B.A. in mathematics and theater from Sarah Lawrence College, and as an undergraduate, she spent time studying math in Budapest and theater in Moscow. In 2016, she first performed her original one-woman play called Uniform Convergence, which explores the struggles of two women (historical mathematician Sofia Kovalevskaya and a fictional Asian-American math professor) trying to find their place in the academic world. Over the past three years, Corrine has performed at over 15 venues, including college math departments, high school programs, the national conference MAA MathFest, and Off-Broadway with the Pan-Asian Repertory Theater.
