This episode is all about the brain! I visited New Mind Technologies, who have developed devices for brain mapping and neurofeedback. During my visit, I had a brain map done and discussed the results for a really up close and personal view of what's going on in my brain. I received some fantastic recommendations on ways to improve cognition, anxiety, focus, and mood, in addition to lifestyle and behavioral changes that will improve brain performance.
On this episode we discuss:
Why brain maps need to be done with the eyes closed AND open
The types of things that you can discover from a brain map report
Recommendations for achieving a peak-performing brain
What an EEG can tell you about your mood
Why a brain map may look different based on the time of day
How daylight savings time changes can affect the brain
Why each brain wave frequency can provide us with different information about our brain
Alpha and Beta brain wave asymmetry being indicators of depression and anxiety
Brain training as an alternative to medication for depression
How the brain is continuously monitoring your environment
Why meditation can help keep your brain focused and optimized
Supplement deficiencies and how they relate to brain health
Photic entrainment and how you can use it to train your brain
The harmful effects of blue light at night
How just one night of poor sleep can impact brain performance
How diet changes can change how the brain functions
How neurofeedback training sessions can improve your anxiety and depression
Why the brain loves patterns and how that relates to the challenge of forming new habits
Receptors in the brain and how they can be overloaded by substance abuse
How you can decrease the effects of trauma on the brain
Using alpha/theta training as a way to "cheat" at meditation

For this week's episode, we are finally taking a break from all this Covid-19 stuff to talk about a topic that I am personally fascinated in, which is the therapeutic use of psychedelics, or psychoactive drugs. Today we are talking with Dr. Katelyn Kalstein who is a naturopathic doctor that specializes in ketamine therapy. Dr. Kalstein may be familiar to ya'll because she was previously the medical director of Dave Asprey's "40 Years of Zen". On this episode, we discuss the therapeutic applications of psychedelics and how Dr. Kalstein uses ketamine to help her clients overcome mental health challenges.
Dr. Katelyn Kalstein is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor, with a master's in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and is a certified ketamine therapist. She specializes in integrative treatments for mental illness and chronic health conditions. She started her medical career teaching meditation to executives as the medical director at 40 Years of Zen, Dave Asprey's intensive neurofeedback program in Seattle. Her special interest in the brain and mental health led her to practice ketamine therapy - a legal, safe and powerful approach to treating mental illness.
On this episode we discuss:
Dr. Kalstein's background and how she got into studying ketamine therapy
"40 Years of Zen" and Dr. Kalstein's experience working with Dave Asprey
The importance of focusing on the root causes of depression, instead of treating only symptoms
Why it's important to clearly understand the side effects of antidepressants
How antidepressants work by changing the chemistry of the brain, and the challenges of weaning off of them
The history behind Prozac and the development of antidepressants since its conception
Ketamine's evolution from it's early use, and its classification as a schedule 1 controlled substance
The studies supporting the efficacy of utilizing psychedelics for the treatment of depression
How prescriptions for ketamine work, and how the experience is guided and supervised
Ways to determine is someone is a suitable candidate for ketamine therapy
How to determine how long ketamine treatments last, frequency, and the safety concerns of home treatments
How ketamine treatments can "reset" the brain and offer patients an opportunity develop new behaviors
The various receptors that ketamine affects in the brain
What a typical ketamine therapy session looks like
Why depression can be a strategy used by the brain to deal with trauma
Strategies to reprogram the subconscious mind
The health benefits of maintaining quality social relationships
How to find a ketamine-friendly therapist that you can trust, and questions you should ask
Dr. Kalstein's morning routine, and most impactful biohacks

This week we are lucky enough to have a brilliant infection disease doctor on the podcast, Dr. Sary Beidas, to discuss the pathology and treatment options for Covid-19. So far I've really only shared information on the epidemiology and public health science aspects of the outbreak, but I haven't gone into detail on current and potential treatments (as it's not my area of expertise). I have been receiving a lot of questions about the current and potential Covid-19 treatments, so I thought it was best to have an expert inform us on these topics. Dr. Saudi Beidas, who is one of the leading infectious doctos in the U.S. was gracious enough to offer his time to provide us with the medical perspective on Covid-19. I'm very grateful for the insight he shared, as I learned a lot from this conversation and I think you will as well!
Dr. Sary Beidas, MD is an infectious disease specialist in Orange Park, FL and has been practicing for 30 years. He graduated from Fac Med U Jordan, Amman in 1983 and specializes in infectious disease medicine.
On this episode we discuss:
Dr. Beidas' background and how he became involved with studying infectious diseases
How Covid-19 presents itself, and how it spreads through the population
Treatment methods that are currently being used and researched
How Covid-19 differs from the flu
Why losing your sense of taste and smell could be an early sign you have contracted Covid-19
How to measure the oxygen saturation in your lungs using a pulse oximeter
Remdesivir, Zithromax, Hydroxychloroquine: their risks and potential in treating Covid-19
Why heart problems may put you at higher risk of developing more severe viral symptoms
How safety issues can arise when scaling up drug or vaccine trials
The correlation between smoking and a higher mortality rate from Covid-19
Why behavioral and lifestyle changes are critical to maintaining a healthy immune system
The time that Covid-19 can survive on various surfaces
Preventative measures you can take to keep yourself and others safe
Some alternative treatments that MAY be effective for treating Covid-19 (do your own research)
Why NSAID's could potentially make things worse when using as a treatment for Covid-19

Dr. Shallenberger has been practicing medicine for 45 years, and has been using ozone in his medical practice since 1983. He has authored several indexed papers on ozone therapy and has also written “The Principles and Application of Ozone Therapy – A Practical Guideline For Physicians” and "The Ozone Miracle", both of which are available on Amazon. Perhaps his most significant contribution to medicine is his patented discovery of assessing mitochondrial function using VO2 analysis. He believes the evidence is clear that the secret to a long, healthy, and functional life is measuring and optimizing mitochondrial function.
This episode is bursting with information related to ozone therapy and it's benefits. Dr. Shallenberger shares an interesting story behind his transition from working in a standard, western medical practice, to one focused on health optimization. The mechanisms behind how ozone works in the body, valuable tests to determine mitochondrial health, and strategies to keep our bodies functioning well as we age are all topics you will hear in this extremely informative podcast episode.
On this episode we discuss:
Dr. Shallenberger's realization early on that the standard medical advice he'd been taught wasn't effective
How a gift of old medical books from Dr. Shallenberger's Dad inspired a shift in perspective regarding natural treatments
Linus Pauling Biography: https://lpi.oregonstate.edu/about/linus-pauling-biography
The definition of O2 and why oxygen has to exist in pairs and share electrons.
What happens to O2 when it's passed through an ozone generator

How your cells' ability to produce ozone to fight infection can be reduced
Link to Dr. Shallenberger's paper on how ozone works: https://evolvewithdesera.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Prolozone-Regenerating-Joints-and-Eliminating-Pain.pdf
The immune system compartments, how they react to each other, and how that relates to ozone therapy
Why an autoimmune disorder is actually an abnormal immune system response to a microbe in the body
The different ways to adminster ozone therapy
An explanation of ozone saunas, enemas, blood and tissue injections
The series of chain reactions that occur in the body after ozone therapy is administered
The NRF2 pathway, it's role with our body's antioxidant production, and how ozone activates that pathway
Oxidative stress and how it relates to aging
How telomeres operate, and why they don't work as well as we age
Whether mindfulness practices and breathwork can affect telomere length
How Dr. Shallenberger tests for mitochondrial health
Why healthy mitochondria produce LESS carbon dioxide
How thyroid function can affect lifespan, and the relationship between gluten and thyroid hormone production
Why thyroid tests are approximately 10% accurate
