The Dr. Westin Childs Podcast

by Dr. Westin Childs

Do you feel like your thyroid is taking over your life? Are you suffering from symptoms like weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, brain fog, or mood swings? If so, you aren’t alone. In fact, millions of other thyroid patients in the United States and around the world suffer from the same issues. And these issues persist even in the face of normal treatment with thyroid medication! The question is: what can you do about it? That’s exactly what this podcast is about. I’m Dr. Westin Childs (D.O.) a former practicing osteopathic physician and my goal is to help thyroid patients get back to feeling 100%. Well, I actually have 2 goals: #1. The first is to help 1 million thyroid patients directly or indirectly. And #2. To create the most comprehensive and helpful thyroid resource for thyroid patients on the internet. I know just how debilitating thyroid disease can be and I also know that it is possible to take control of your life. One of the biggest problems with thyroid management is that we just don’t talk about it enough. This podcast changes that. We are going to discuss all sorts of topics ranging from thyroid management, the use of less talked about thyroid medications, opinions on emerging treatments and therapies from leading experts, the use of natural therapies and how they fit into the conventional model, and so much more. If you want more information aside from the standard thyroid treatment of TSH and levothyroxine then this is the place for you. We won’t just stop at your thyroid, either. Other topics that are relevant and important to thyroid function will be discussed including things like hormone balance, menopause, testosterone replacement therapy, and weight loss therapies. If something helps you to better manage your thyroid, improve your symptoms, lose weight, or balance your hormones then it’s something I want to include. For more information on me and why I do what I do check out my website here: www.restartmed.com If you have any questions or have a topic you want me to discuss please shoot me an email on my website to submit a request in the "contact" section!

How to Lower TPO Antibodies: 5 Tips I use in my Practice

9m · Published 14 Aug 03:52
Are your TPO antibodies or thyroperoxidase antibodies elevated? In this video I go over 5 tips and tricks I use on patients in my practice to help LOWER TPO antibodies. 1. Get on the right diet for YOUR body - AIP diet vs Gluten free/dairy free/soy free vs elimination diet 2. Consider using DHEA and/or Testosterone - DHEA and Testosterone help lower antibody levels while boosting weight loss and sex drive 3. Consider using Zinc or Selenium - Both can improve immune function and boost T4 to T3 conversion 4. Improve gut function - SIBO causes reduced T4 to T3 conversion and increases inflammation 5. Consider using Low Dose Naltrexone or LDN - LDN is probably the best treatment for reducing TPO antibodies These 5 tips are very effective at lowering antibody levels but be sure to use ALL of them at the same time for maximum benefit. You can see the entire article here: http://www.restartmed.com/tpo-antibodies/ Leave your comments below and I will personally respond! Leptin Resistance and Thyroid Resistance [8 Tips to Reverse Both]

23m · Published 14 Aug 01:53
This video will guide you through how to diagnose and treat both Leptin Resistance and Thyroid Resistance. Both of these conditions go hand in hand so its helpful to look for both if you suspect you have one or the other. Symptoms of Leptin resistance: - Weight loss resistance or the inability to lose weight - Ravenous appetite even after a large meal - Slow metabolism - Cold hands/feet/extremities - Crushing fatigue - Symptoms of hypothyroidism despite being on medication - Constant weight gain Thyroid resistance is defined as low free T3 relative to Reverse T3. In order to test for this condition you need to order both tests and look at the ratio between the two. The higher your reverse T3 the harder it is for free T3 to get into your cells which leads to thyroid hormone resistance at the cellular level. Treatment usually requires T3 medication in conjunction with the 8 tips below. 8 Steps to Reverse Leptin Resistance and Thyroid Resistance: 1. Get your thyroid evaluated and get on the right type and dose of thyroid medication - For most patients this means NDT or T3 containing medications like Cytomel or Liothyronine. 2. Add in HIIT (high intensity interval training) to your work outs - This type of burst training helps sensitize your cells to insulin and leptin. 3. Avoid processed and inflammatory foods - High levels of inflammation makes thyroid function worse and makes it more difficult to reverse leptin resistance. 4. Make sure to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night 5. Eliminate or drastically reduce your fructose consumption - Fructose is metabolized into uric acid in the liver and which increases inflammation and makes leptin levels worse. 6. Do not restrict your calories - Starvation mode lowers your basal metabolic rate and increases conversion of T4 to reverse T3. 7. Optimize T4 to T3 conversion - Use supplements or thyroid hormones: - Zinc: http://amzn.to/2aQF0pl - Selenium: http://amzn.to/2bffBKU 8. If necessary use medications to lower Leptin levels - Consider using GLP-1 agonists which can help lower leptin levels and help patients with weight loss. Why Levothyroxine Causes Weight Gain and How to Prevent it

22m · Published 06 Aug 23:29
Does Levothyroxine cause weight gain? That is the question I am going to answer in this video today. Here is a common problem: patients with hypothyroidism present to their doctor, get put on T4 medication like Levothyroxine or Synthroid and they CONTINUE to gain weight - despite no change in their diet or exercise routine. How can this be? In this video I answer what I think is going on in many patients and it has to do with T4 to reverse T3 conversion when certain patients are given medications that contain T4 only. In the setting of inflammation, trauma, infections, liver/kidney issues, low calorie diets and nutrient deficiencies the body can take T4 and convert it into the thyroid blocking metabolite reverse T3. High levels of reverse T3 then compete for binding at the T3 cellular receptor site and put the brakes on thyroid and metabolic function. So how do you treat this condition? Most patients will need medication containing T3 like natural desiccated thyroid or liothyronine/cytomel to "flush" the system. I also give several tips that I use in my office to help boost thyroid function if your doctor isn't willing to give you medication with T3 in it: 1. Optimize T4 to T3 conversion - I recommend you consider using Zinc or selenium: As promised here is the link to the zinc and selenium that I use in my office: Zinc: http://amzn.to/2aXp4Fg Selenium: http://amzn.to/2aHjTc5 2. Fix your adrenals - Consider using adrenal adaptogens or adrenal glandulars Here's what I use: DSF: http://amzn.to/2aC8l6d 3. Add high intensity exercise - To help lower insulin and leptin levels 4. Reduce inflammation and find hidden sources of inflammation - the easiest first place to look is at your diet 5. Lower leptin and insulin levels - It will be impossible to lose weight with leptin resistance and/or insulin resistance and both conditions reduce T4 to T3 conversion. The Best Hashimoto’s Diet: How to Lose Weight and Feel Better

24m · Published 06 Aug 03:41
In this video I go over the 5 BEST Diets for patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. These diets have all been used by me in my clinic and have helped other Hashimoto's patients lose weight and feel better. With all the information out there it can get confusing on which diet you should be following... this video will help you understand which diet you should be focusing on by tailoring it to YOUR body. The diets I go over: 1. Elimination diet or food sensitivity diet - Who should use this diet? those with multiple food allergies, post nasal drip, acid reflux or history of asthma/eczema 2. The autoimmune paleo diet or the autoimmune protocol Diet (abbreviated AIP diet) - Who should use this diet? Not everyone! I recommend patients who have a personal history of multiple autoimmune conditions or those who have failed less restrictive diets 3. The gluten free diet - Who should use this diet? Most patients should at least consider going gluten free, dairy free and soy free if they have Hahsimoto's. This is THE place to start. 4. The paleo diet Who should use this diet? Those with a history of depression, anxiety, gut imbalances or acne. This is also another great place to start 5. The low FODMAP's Diet Who should use this diet? Those who have a diagnosis of SIBO or yeast overgrowth or those with who experience gas/bloating or abdominal distention after meals. 3 Diets to AVOID With Hashimoto's: 1. Low fat diets 2. Very low carbohydrate diets or nutritional ketosis 3. Very low calorie diets All three of these can lead to worsening thyroid function! Lose Weight with Hypothyroidism

23m · Published 05 Aug 23:01
If you have hypothyroidism you know how hard it can be to lose weight. I've been helping patients with hypothyroidism lose weight by balancing their hormones and that's exactly what this video is about. I walk you through 5 step-by-step examples of how to do it. If you watched the vide these are the supplements I've referred to: Berberine: http://amzn.to/2aB79Dy DIM: http://amzn.to/2aB7eak Indole 3 carbinol: http://amzn.to/2asBLUW High quality progesterone: http://amzn.to/2aEPsDx These are the same steps I use in my practice: 1. Reverse and treat insulin resistance if present - high levels of insulin make burning fat as a fuel source almost impossible. Up to 50% of patients have insulin resistance on TOP of hypothyroidism and I've found that to be even higher in most patients I treat. 2. Treat leptin resistance and thyroid resistance if present - You need to make sure you check your reverse T3/free T3 ratio (it should be greater than 0.2), if it is lower than you have thyroid resistance and need T3. If your leptin levels are greater than 12 then you need to consider treatment with a GLP-1 agonist. Remember that thyroid resistance and leptin resistance go together! 3. Reverse Estrogen dominance if present (or low progesterone) - Remember to use urine testing for these hormones so that you can find ALL metabolites and figure out which step is blocked in your body. If necessary you may need to consider using bio-identical progesterone cream (link above). 4. Treat low testosterone if present - Low testosterone can cause weight gain, mood changes and low energy. Many women who suffer from insulin resistance ALSO suffer from low testosterone. 5. Adrenal fatigue and elevated cortisol levels - High levels of adrenal hormones (cortisol) can cause weight gain and lead to constant fatigue. Make sure to check your cortisol and cortisone levels in the urine at 4 points throughout the day. I recommend going through ALL of these steps in THIS order so you can finally lose weight with hypothyroidism. Using these steps I've been able to help patients lose weight about 98% of the time.
