NursEM - Nursing in Emergency

Honestly...the talent in the zoom is amazing!  We welcome Dr. Grant Innes, a true pioneer and famous researcher in Emergency Medicine (and former Resident of Dr. Peter Rosen himself)!  We also welcome Sherry Stackhouse, a well-known emergency nurse educator and Allan Lai co-host of the world-famous ResusTonight podcast.  Oh and Monique and Landon are there too but definitely humbled by the rest of them!

Using some cases presented by Dr. Innes, we all discuss diagnostic testing, pre/post-test probabilities and explore the 'controversy?' of whether nurses should be ordering tests before a MD/NP assessment has occurred.  We are all passionate about this topic and you might be surprised at how your opinion gets swayed once you have a listen.

We are sincerely thankful for Grant, Sherry and Allan for giving of their time to come together and collaborate on such an interesting topic to emergency departments.  This one's a bit long but honestly, cutting any of the content would have taken away from the brains in the zoom!  Digest this one in a couple of sittings...

Finally!  We get to talking about the electrolytes and their disturbances.  It will make more sense listening to Episode 1 and 2 first!  

In what was supposed to be a 2-part series, it became evident that it needed to be three once we started getting nerdy about feedback loops in the body.  Enjoy this episode where we talk about the body's feedback systems and how it maintains balance.

On this episode we talk about COVID drug therapy - steroids, the "zumabs" and, of course, ivermectin.  Note that this was recorded on September 15, 2021 and information (and weird trendy drugs) change frequently...

We had the opportunity to have an extremely valuable experience in interviewing a network of people from various areas who have the lived experience of the war on drugs.  The focus is hearing how they would like to be treated when presenting to the emergency department.  Their lived experience will cause any health provider to reflect on their practice and make simple changes to make everyone's experience of care better!

This month we talk about the types of vaccines and focus on the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine and dispel the myths circulating about it. 

This month we talk about mask wearing and share our opinions on mask wearing.  And really we ask the question...why is this even a question?  Love us or hate us...we have an opinion on the matter!  Note this was recorded mid-September 2020 and took us a bit of time to get online (obviously information changes as time goes on...).

This month we interview world-renowned harm reduction epidemiologist Dr. Jane Buxton about how the COVID pandemic has crossed with the opiate crises and harm reduction.   Dr. Buxton is truly inspiring in her approach to addictions medicine and approaching additions with a human perspective that could benefit all emergency practitioners.

This month we talk to Dr. Robert Reynolds a 'friendly-neighbourhood' infectious disease specialist about COVID.  A mish mash of questions and thoughts for our little conversation.,
