One of the WORST Parts of Going To Therapy

8m · Published 07 Jul 14:28
In today's #coffeewithatherapist, I am going to delve into talking about what I consider the "hardest" or worst part of therapy and the growth process. It may not be what you think, and is something that I often warn my clients about. Even though this part is difficult, it is 100% worth it in the long run.

Psychologically Navigating Mask-Wearing and Other COVID-19 Changes

9m · Published 06 Jul 14:52
In today's #coffeewithatherapist, I was inspired by my own struggles and others inquiring about how we might navigate COVID-19 mandates of wearing a mask & other changes with our mental health in tact. And how we can be kind to ourselves and those who are enforcing it.

I'll be addressing the following:
1. My own psychological struggles with mask-wearing and how I've navigated them
2. Gaining big picture perspective
3. Owning our power in how we respond
4. Doing what's the least stressful for ourselves, others, and our financial, emotional, and physical wellbeing
5. Celebrating the little things and rebelling in ways that are positive "i.e. wearing sassy, colored masks"

I'd love to hear your thoughts and questions on this one. I started with a not-so-great perspective and shifted as I was able to gain perspective and realize that my ego was often navigating my frustration. I am not a medical expert or political expert, my only hopes in this video is to discuss the psychology around our responses to mandates and change during COVID-19.

How Do We Identify Trauma?

10m · Published 03 Jul 15:09
In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about the ways we can identify or connect the dots when it comes to our behaviors that indicate that we've had trauma.

FIRST - I'd recommend working with a professional that specializes in trauma, as these things can be complex, and often our brain can shield us/encodes trauma memories different than other memories (and there's a good reason for that).
Some reasons we may struggle to connect the dots:
1. Trauma memories are encoded differently
2. Often childhood trauma is invalidated and normalized "every kid gets bullied"
3. Intergenerational trauma (trauma that happened to the generations before us) can often be passed down in subtle ways

Tune in to learn more!

How To Heal if You Can't See A Therapist

8m · Published 02 Jul 16:48
In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about the different free/low cost and accessible options for healing trauma and mental health problems if you don't have access to good, affordable mental healthcare.

First, I want to say that I will always advocate seeing a therapist/a professional (if it's possible) as the best option. However, I also realize that this is not accessible to all and so I wanted to answer questions on my TikTok from people in varying situations and living in various places -- how can we heal ourselves / work to heal trauma if we can't see a therapist?

In this video I label the 4 ways, including bibliotherapy -- here are some of my personal recommendations that come to mind easily as transformative books/authors:
1. The Dance of Anger - Harriet Lerner (and many of her books)
2. Loving Him without Losing You - Beverly Engel (and many of her books)
3. Mindsight by Dr. Dan Siegel (and many of his other books)
4. The Body Keeps the Score by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk
5. For relationship trauma/problems, books by Dr. John Gottman
6. For perfectionists, Type As, and givers -- The 10 Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown
Other authors: Peter Levine, Dr. Gabor Mate (for addiction help), Dr. Anita Johnston for Eating Disorders and Body Image.

I'd love to hear your feedback and any recommendations you might add as well as things we can do or books that helped you on your healing journey.

Q&A: Boundaries with Kids

9m · Published 26 Jun 16:53
In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about teaching and setting boundaries with kids, what's developmentally appropriate for their brains, and what are some effective ways to still validate their feelings while setting boundaries and structure for them since they don't always know the best ways to set boundaries for themselves.

Some resources discussed include: Dan Siegel's work with kids, "The Whole Brain Child" and Henry Cloud & John Townsend's, "Boundaries with Kids"

When Happiness Feels Bad

10m · Published 25 Jun 14:41
In today's #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking all about the 3 ways I've seen happiness be a bad, scary, or avoided emotion in my clients and even my own life. I'll also discuss the ways we can heal this and work towards being more comfortable with an emotion many of us claim to want or be seeking.

1. Happiness feels scary because we are waiting for the other shoe to drop
2. Happiness feels bad because we have guilt about those who are struggling
3. Happiness feels uncomfortable because we are used to always being on the go and achieving the next "big goal" or life event (i.e. marriage, kids, job promotion, retirement, etc.)
