Ep 15. - Terry Fox, Napster, and the Astrodome

57m · Published 08 Apr 10:00

All aboard! It’s time for your weekly adventure through history with Trish and Mike! On today’s episode we take you back in time and through space - to the moon! For centuries odd flashes of light have been witnessed on the moon. What are they? Aliens? Meteors? From astronomy to the Astrodome, we learn about the first indoor baseball game. You won’t find too many bugs in AstroTurf but you can learn about where the term ‘bugs' for computer glitches came from as we discuss the invention of COBOL thanks to a very important American female mathematician and Navy veteran. Technology has grown by leaps and bounds in the past century alone but not everyone is a fan. The band Metallica launched a lawsuit against this P2P sharing site 21 years ago. It’s an Old Bet Sean Parker made a ton of cash off his idea. I wonder how many tonnes 24 million dollars is? Terry Fox started his Marathon of Hope 41 years ago this week, his goal was to raise $1 for every Canadian. All this and more on The Time Machine with Trish and Mike!

Ep. 14 - April Fool's Day, Nickelodeon, and The Olympics

55m · Published 01 Apr 10:00

Do you have your ticket? It’s time to board The Time Machine with Trish and Mike for another adventure through time. This week we start our show discussing April’s Fools Day. Don’t be deceived and end up looking like a half-wit, learn the origins before you fall for a prank! Tomfoolery abounded once Nickelodeon aired for the first time although its popularity may not have topped the first movie theatre. Blockbuster definitely changed the way we enjoyed our movies. Do you know where the last Blockbuster is located? Mike does and you can too (and learn how to collect a special piece of memorabilia.) What else brings people together? The Olympics...or conflict. Either way, NATO’s got you covered.

Ep. 13 - Typhoid Mary, The Day Baltimore had no Colts, WrestleMania

1h 2m · Published 25 Mar 10:00

All aboard the Time Machine with Trish and Mike! This week has us questioning the standards of movie filming etiquette. Hays would not be impressed with modern standards. He may be more impressed with the upgrades to twister warning systems (although he likely would still question the 1996 film itself.) Someone who likely really wished they could endure modern (health) standards is Mary Mallon, the Irish cook not-so-affectionately called “Typhoid Mary”.  The standards for the Baltimore Colts deteriorated quickly resulting in a very quick change of address. Too bad they couldn’t use The Bluenose to ship their equipment to their new stadium. They likely “wrestled” with the decision to move. Get your ticket ready and join us as we unpack this week’s topics.

Ep. 12 - Stanley Cup, Canadian Beavers, and the New York City Subway

56m · Published 18 Mar 10:00

All Aboard! It’s time for another trip through history! Lord Stanley likely wouldn’t have had an issue with cash advancement or authorized payments, although it likely didn’t hurt to keep some gold handy (maybe he knows something about the secret treasure the SS Georgina was carrying?) How many tokens do you think the NYC Subway collects each day and what the daily value is? More than a few loonies we’re betting. Why loons and not beavers, which is Canada’s official animal, if you didn’t know eh? Rick Hansen raised quite a few loonies himself during his Man in Motion world tour to raise money and awareness for individuals living with physical disabilities. All this and more on The Time Machine with Trish and Mike.

Ep. 11 - Storm of the Century, Girl Scout Cookies, and Who has the best Chicken

1h 5m · Published 11 Mar 11:00

Grab your ticket and watch your step as you hop aboard The Time Machine with Trish and Mike for another weekly adventure through time. On this week’s episode we pause and reflect on the past year. A year ago the world realized the devastating effects of Covid-19 and countries everywhere went into various states of lockdown. Today, with vaccines being rolled out and some countries effectively Covid-19 free we talk about how to move forward and what life may look like post Covid-19. Some calming reassurance was definitely required this year. We discuss two different events involving leadership and their effect on people across the globe. What goes together like peas and carrots? Storms and cookies! The Storm of the Century affected millions of people back in ‘93. How do these storms happen and are we prepared for the next one? At least have some Girl Guide cookies handy to enjoy while you wait for power to be restored to your home. Girl Guides or Girl Scouts? We compare and contrast the differences between our two countries and see who has the better cookies (hint… it isn’t Canada for very good reasons!) KFC? Popeyes? Jollibees? Which restaurant chain has the best finger licking good chicken? We narrow down which fowl is foul and which is cock of the walk as we celebrate the birthday of an important fast food mogul.

Ep. 10 - Mario Day, Cinco de Marcho, and racing on Daytona Beach

58m · Published 04 Mar 11:00

It’s that time again for another weekly dose of history! All aboard The Time Machine with Trish and Mike. On this week’s episode we discuss the mysterious disappearance of Malaysian Flight 370 and the possible theories put forward as to what happened. Who could have helped discover its whereabouts? Magellan, the first to circumnavigate the globe was an excellent explorer but a very poor diplomate. Find out what “The Full Magellan'' means and the connection to the periodic table. Sorry Mario, your princess is in another castle. Find out the dark truth behind The Mushroom Kingdom in time to celebrate Mario Day. Speaking of made up holidays, have you heard of Cinco de Marcho? As we race through 2021 (how is it already March?) find out how racing at Daytona originally started. Find out all this and more on this week's episode!

Ep. 9 - Mardi Gras, Robotic Hands, and Fun Florida Cities

1h 2m · Published 25 Feb 11:00

All aboard! It’s time for another historical adventure! This week on The Time Machine with Trish and Mike we discuss the first celebration of Mardi Gras in North America (and the unique Canadian connection). It’s another Tutoring session with Trish (you’ll want to hear the theme song Mike composed!) Hey batter-batter! We examine the heliocentric model of the universe before examining what one young girl was able to do at all 30 MLB stadiums. Johnny Cash has us making isolation playlists (It is doubtful “My Heart Will Go On” is on either one of our lists…) and Florida celebrates becoming a state this week. Can Trish properly pronounce some local spots? Make sure you have your ticket handy for this week’s ride through time to find out!

Ep. 8 - Canadian Toonies, the Tallest Man EVER, and a Flying Cow

1h 1m · Published 18 Feb 11:00

All aboard! It’s time for another journey on The Time Machine with Trish and Mike! You have heard of when pigs fly, but what about cows? You might think we are a little loony for discussing some unusual currency facts this week, but a toonie for your thoughts about it? A toonie would for sure get you a Double-Double at Tim Horton’s - how did the iconic Canadian chain start anyhow? You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to find out, although Astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly could likely point you in the right direction. Worst case you could always use a phone book to call someone who might know...well if people still use a phone book that is. Definitely, someone who could have eaten their fair share of Tim Horton treats was Robert Wadlow. Find out what world record he still holds to this date! Treats are always wonderful to share with friends. Crikey! We wonder what John Glenn would have wanted to snack on while orbiting the Earth in Friendship 7. Feeling a little puzzled? Join us for another adventure to find out some answers!

This week’s episode has its fair share of mysteries as we uncover the truth about King Tut’s curse and its many victims. Misplaced sports paraphernalia raises some questions. The establishment of ASCAP and copyright laws causes some concerns. Mata Hari, the famous Dutch exotic dancer turned infamous spy leaves us with some queries. An image of a tiny blue dot causes a slight freakout and the launch of YouTube causes general curiosity about the first video ever uploaded to the platform.
