Dr. Melissa Pangelinan - Auburn University Pediatric Movement and Physical Activity Lab
43m · PublishedDr. Melissa Pangelinan is an assistant professor in the School of Kinesiology at Auburn University. She completed her Ph.D. in neuroscience and cognitive science at the University of Maryland. Over the last five years, she has developed adapted physical activity and sport programs for children, adolescents, and adults with developmental disabilities (including autism spectrum disorder, down syndrome, cerebral palsy). Most recently, she has developed virtual exercise and fitness programs for adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities. Her research has measured the efficacy of these programs with respect to motor skill development, physical activity levels, sleep, and neurocognitive outcomes.

She serves as the Artistic Director for the Sturgis Youth Theatre, a community-based theatre providing class and production-related experiences for students ages 4-16. In 2010 she founded the Spectrum Theatre program for kids on and off the Autism Spectrum which provides in and after school drama based interventions that best support the development of pretend play, social interaction and non-verbal communication. The primary focus of Ms. Berghammer’s creative work has been in the development of performance pieces, Theatre in Education programs, and staged productions that focus on critical social issues or works designed specifically for spectrum specific youth audiences. In 2014 Professor Berghammer received the Autism Society of Iowa Stephen Tsai Award for Excellence in Autism Education.

After multiple surgeries and months of recovery, Ellie overcame considerable adversities and is living a full-life. She shares her incredible perspective on working through challenges and embracing life.
