Failure is F-U-N | Creative Chaos

59m · Published 12 Oct 00:00

Straight from the vault, into your ears...Failure can be fun! We all experience failure along our creative paths, but perspective is key. Joz takes an Improv class and talks about her experience. We talk about the concept of "Failure is fun" and how we can incorporate it into our lives as we pursue our artistic endeavors. Life is hard as it is, so don't be too hard on yourself, allow yourself to fail because there are lessons in those failures. Gaby shares a bit about her experiences with failure and how she is changing her mindset. Lloyd shares the frustration of being told he was "close" to being ready to record his demo when he was expecting a yes and how an unexpected comment from a coach helped him. Embrace the suck and growth will come.

Psychology and the Actor | Veronica Boneta

1h 0m · Published 07 Sep 00:00

Gaby, Joz, and Angela speak with Veronica Boneta. Veronica is a charismatic enthusiast of the arts, a mother, and author. Having worked in theater for many years, she turned to the field of Psychology while also bringing with her the knowledge she had acquired as an actress. Now a full time Psychotherapist, she looks forward to furthering her research in the intertwining of Psychology and Acting.

While discussing her acting beginnings, Veronica touches on the acting method she learned, Psycho-physical. Psycho-physical Awareness is a popular acting technique used in many schools and universities in the U.S. and Europe. This technique works on the relationship between the mind and the body and at developing an actor's conscious awareness. It is the totality where the actor fully experiences and embodies the role, is present in the moment, drawing on sensory information and experience, as opposed to simply sorting out the movements as they might in early stages of rehearsal.

At their cores, psychology, cognitive science, and theater are all trying to do the same thing, which is understand why people do the things they do, our range of behavior, and where it comes from without judgement. Actors must do real work to temporarily convince themselves and others of unreal circumstances. Yet they must be mindful of how much of their own lives and experiences they infuse their characters with. Actors must understand the complexities of life.

Training & Practice...Makes Progress | Creative Chaos

53m · Published 24 Aug 00:00

As VO artists, our office is often a closet. We often struggle to make sure the space works for us and what we need but it is also a comfortable space that will allow us to spend hours auditioning and working. Angela and Jozlyn chat about rearranging their booths and adding some acoustic treatments and equipment.

Jozlyn shares some on-camera journey news for herself and her son. We are training, and doing headshots, and shopping for agents. It is all very exciting and it makes us think about how we started and how much training is necessary as you progress within your career. Angela, Lloyd and Joz chat about their thoughts on training, starting out, as they got going, and what they are thinking about it now. We discuss the importance of continuing to train as you move forward in your career but also how beneficial it is to incorporate new things into your training such as acting and improv to develop new skills.

We also recognize that sometimes you have to look beyond the place where you started and experience what other people/coaches can potentially offer. It is very much about growth and stepping outside of your comfort zone. This can be scary but also rewarding. On the flip side of that, you can also come across people whose coaching style is not necessarily a good fit for you, so at that point it is important to look back at that experience and take it as a another step in your journey, and let it go.

Always remember who you are and what you bring to the table.

Parenting isn't Always the Default, Child Free Life | Paulette Erato

55m · Published 10 Aug 00:00

Jozlyn, Gaby, Angela, and Lloyd chat with the host of La Vida Mas Chevere Podcast, Paulette Erato, and discuss the childfree experience. As per Paulette, being childfree is the least interesting thing about her. But it is a core identity. And finding other childfree Latinas or Latines like her hasn’t always been easy. They are routinely slandered and made to believe there’s something wrong with them for not wanting to have children.
Refusing to conform to societal norms puts them at odds with their culture. But also knowing that bearing and raising children is not meant for them is a massive measure of self-awareness, boundaries, and frankly, peak adulting. So while she thinks being childfree is as natural for her as having curly hair, brown eyes, and being right-handed, She tries to make sure that part of her is visible. If only so that other childfree Latines looking for examples of a thriving life outside society’s expectations can use her as a model.

Many believe that having a baby is a woman's most important achievement and society places a great deal of pressure on women to become mothers. People always seem to frown upon those who are not following the "standard protocol" of getting married in their young adult years, having a couple of kids and then growing old and retiring.

Great news! Women can have fulfilling lives without children! We unpack a lot during this episode but this is a very important conversation that needs to be had.

Strategizing Then & Now | Creative Chaos

50m · Published 27 Jul 00:00

Angela, Gaby, Lloyd and Jozlyn chat about where they are at with strategizing in creative biz.  There's a lot going on in this episode! Jozlyn discovered, through on-camera acting, that sometimes you just have to go where the energy flows and be flexible when it comes to adjusting your strategy depending on what is working for your career. Lloyd does not have all his duck in a row but he has a plan to get to his goal. He has also gotten wildly involved in the Vegas improv scene which has helped him in many ways like with his confidence. BDBJ Energy! Gaby's plan has always been doing character work and while she wanted to do some Spanish work, she has been booking much more in Spanish than English. She is going with the flow and going where the path takes her. She does admit that she needs to learn more about how to market herself. Angela is trying her best to manage her time around her family and making sure she has time to work on her career. She has not auditioned for a while but life is happening and that can make it difficult to do what needs to be done to advance your career. It is not Quality over Quantity but rather Quantity with Quality.
