That Hoarder: Overcome Compulsive Hoarding

by That Hoarder

Hoarding disorder is stigmatised and people who hoard feel vast amounts of shame. This podcast began life as an audio diary, an anonymous outlet for somebody with this weird condition. That Hoarder speaks about her experiences living with compulsive hoarding, she interviews therapists, academics, researchers, children of hoarders, professional organisers and influencers, and she shares insight and tips for others with the problem. Listened to by people who hoard as well as those who love them and those who work with them, Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That Hoarder aims to shatter the stigma, share the truth and speak openly and honestly to improve lives.

So do we just pick a room and start?

6m · Published 23 Apr 09:00
Thinking of compulsive hoarders, thinking of people whose homes are in quite a mess, then just saying, “I'm going to work on the bedroom” is just too big. It's too overwhelming. It's too difficult to do.

A moment of despair in the middle of the night

6m · Published 16 Apr 09:00

I can't tell you how dejected I feel right now. Because sorting out a few boxes in one room is one thing. It's better than not sorting out a few boxes in one room.

But that's one room of several. And that's a few boxes out of a gazillion boxes.

Why hoarding TV shows are a disaster

8m · Published 09 Apr 09:00

Programmes about hoarders exist so that viewers can look into the home of somebody who's struggling and laugh at them. And that's not okay.

My experience of having CBT for hoarding disorder

10m · Published 02 Apr 09:00

I was sceptical because the initial CBT sessions had been relatively useless. But equally, I had no other options. There aren't exactly hoarding treatments readily available. So I agreed to be referred on for this more in-depth therapy.

How I Got Here | Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That Hoarder

6m · Published 30 Mar 13:00

So I guess the place to start really is how I got to where I'm at now. Where I'm at now is that I live in a hoarded house, surrounded by crap that I have a lot of mental blocks around getting rid of.

I'm sick of how I live. But fixing it is so overwhelming that I don't know what to do.

The stigma that surrounds hoarding disorder | Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That Hoarder

5m · Published 30 Mar 13:00

So, I hate the word hoarding. I hate the word hoarder. I resist saying them unless I absolutely have to. And this podcast and the website are kind of forcing me into getting used to those words, and I suspect that's a good thing. But they are difficult words.

It's a very, very stigmatised thing.
