This is part 2 of a two part episode on how to maintain a more consistent level of motivation: 

Outline of the show-

  1. Once we have accepted that we can’t keep chasing the highs of positive feedback without enduring the withdraws of no feedback or negative feedback, a void is left in how we motivate ourselves… and outside of negative feedback life is still hard and slows us down on the way to our goals.
  2. So how do we motivate ourselves and endure the pain of hard moments that seems to be inevitable?
  3. Go for your goal for the sake of your dharma.
  4. What is dharma? Dharma is your higher calling, your purpose, your responsibility. It is the why that helps you endure  the difficulties of life and persist anyways.
  5. How do I figure out my why?

Episode 2 part 1, How to Maintain Motivation: Doing it for the Dharma

If you want to have consistent motivation when trying to achieve a goal know these things:

  1. Winners like Gary Vee and Tiger Woods are deaf to external feedback, positive or negative. Feedback can be affirmations from others or a birdy.
  2. This makes sense because to our brain, feedback is a singular concept. It doesn’t distinguish between good or bad. Whatever weight  (e.g. emotional response) you put on the good you will therefore,  experience with the bad.
  3. That means if you want to stop riding the motivation rollercoaster, you have to let go of getting excited about positive external feedback that indicates progression towards your goal when you are working towards that goal. You only get to get excited once you war is won, but not when you win a battle.
  4. I know this sounds depressing, because it kind of is. But this is the goal for the week. When you notice you are getting emotionally engaged/excited about some positive feedback, stop yourself.  I made you a How To Kill Your Buzz infographic to keep is short.
