5 Graduate School Myths.

These days deciding to go to graduate school for a masters degree or higher might sound crazy. Especially with all the information that has come out over the past decade or so about side hustles, entrepreneurship, and gig culture. There nothing wrong with none of these avenues. I am an advocate of do what works for you, because what may be best for the next person might not be best for you. But if you are looking to go back to school and get a masters or higher, I will be talking about five myths that you may believe to be true.

Welcome to Season 7 | Graduate School Struggles

5m · Published 06 Oct 05:00

Graduate School Struggles are real. Education is highly recommended worldwide, but the struggles that come along with graduate school aren't talked about by the recommenders. In many cases, we are encouraged to get an education by family, and relatives who may not have gotten the opportunity to get an education, so they do not know much about the experience. What they do know is the status that comes along with it. Graduate school is hard. It is a series of regurgitations, oversimplification, needless explanations, and hot air blowing. That is the graduate school experience in a nutshell, from my perspective. I am not saying this to discourage anyone from experience the graduate school experience. But there will be struggles, and times where you want to burn all of your books. But, that is the nature of the graduate school. To push you past your limits until you break, and then learn to rebuild yourself. Not during your time in the program, but afterward while you are starting your new career. Graduate school struggles go beyond the graduate school itself. You will not come out the same, but you will have a more positive perspective on how you spend your time.

According to an article publish Wei Li there is a mental health crisis in academia. Graduate students are six times more likely to experience depression and anxiety than the general population. 36% of students have sought help for depression or anxiety caused by their studies. I can go on about this for days, but that is a story for another episode, if you would like me to cover this sooner send me an email or reach out to me over on Instagram. All links are in the show notes. And the link to Wei Li’s article

I just want to jump in here and say if you like to read, support your local book store. Before the pandemic I enjoyed either sitting in a book store of a near by coffee shop and read or work. I know it is easy to download a book or renting them online, but there is nothing like walking through a used book store, smelling the new and old book smell, even the authentic must of book store and finding a book you may not have even though you were looking for. You might be thinking, why would I buy a book, what would I do with them all, you can pass it own to someone you think might like it, or donate it back to the book store and call it a rental. So Get out there and let me know what you find

The benefits of arts and crafts as a hobby.

Welcome back, if you are new here welcome. I am your host Don, and for today’s episode I will be talking about the benefits of arts and crafts and having a hobby. Let’s get into it.

I want to start this one out by saying that arts and crafts is a great way to relieve stress, especially after a long day. If you have kids, and you want to spend some time with them away from technology, go to your local dollar store, and grab a coloring book and some inexpensive crayons or color pencils, some scissors and be imaginative and create. Even if you don’t have any kids, give it a go. And there you have it, arts an craft as a hobby.

In this episode, I will be referring to creativity in the realm of artistic creativity. Hence, the title of the episode is getting into arts and crafts as a hobby.

Benefits of Arts and Crafts

MiNDFOOD

According to MindFood there are 6 Benefits of Arts and Crafts

Stress’s relief, confidence boost, increased empathy, improves quality of life, enhances brain productivity, and lessens effect of serious health conditions.

Research

According to (Adams-Price & Morse, 2018) creation of crafts by Middle Aged and Older Adults are generally accepted in all cultures around the world except for in western culture. Participating in arts and crafts have, also known as hobbies, have long-term health benefits. Such increasing mood, increasing energy levels, and increasing physical health. A hobby can be anything like hiking, swimming, walking, writing, drawing, singing, painting. There were a series of studies done by the Synapse Project that demonstrates that older adults who spend several hours a week for a few months learning to participate in a new craft activity showed improvements in their cognitive performance and neural efficiency compared to adults who did not. Adams and Price found that participation in arts and crafts increases life satisfaction. In their study they found there were four factors that were important in increasing life satisfaction which are identity, spirituality, calming, mastery and recognition of master from others. I can go on and on about this, but long tangent short, arts and crafts has and impact on how me function mentally which impacts how we function physically, and this has been proven in various studies highlighting the importance arts, crafts, and hobbies and how the positive impact they have mentally, physical, and socially.

Snippet:

We are nearly in the middle of the 2nd quarter of 2021, the sun is out, and this is the time where, if you live in a region with all four seasons, this is the time be outside. The time where you shed all the layers and go out into the world. Hopefully exploring while keeping in mid COVID, because the last I checked it is still a thing. What I have learned from this experience is that you can never over prepare for anything, but you can under-prepare. If that’s a word. It has been a journey, and I started this podcast on this journey, and you’ve all been here for it. I want to thank you all for being here, those of you who’ve been here since the beginning, and those of you just now joining.

Just Talk

7m · Published 03 Mar 14:57
Welcome back, if you are new here welcome. I am your host Don, and for today’s episode I am going off script. Forewarning, I am going to be all over the place today, I’d like to talk about a few things today that are centered around the following topics. Careers Jobs Gigs Freelance work Education Being a student Self advocacy And hobbies. Lets get into it. Which are all categories that encompasses the work part of work and life. You know the other 75% of what we do in order to have a life. This episode is for everyone, and it is especially for the overachievers, the perfectionists, the workaholics. There has been a rise in perfectionism over the past 4 decades now. There was a study done by Thomas Curran and Andrew Hill called Perfectionism Is Increasing Over Time: A Meta-Analysis of Birth Cohort Differences From 1989 to 2016. Long story short they found that perfectionism has been on a rise since the 80s. According to research published by the American Psychological Association the drive to be perfect has increased and has had an impact in physical and mental health. Everyone I know is a perfectionist in their own right. I am a perfectionist. I have a criteria or standards in which everything I produce have to meet personally and professionally m. Now over the teas I’ve come to terms with the fact that not everything will meet those standards so I’ve become a little more lenient with putting out what I produce and accepting it as good enough but that took years and I am still struggling with it. Types of Perfectionism Perfectionism comes in three common flavors — “self-oriented,” where someone demands perfection from themselves; “other-oriented,” where they demand perfection from others around them (like spouses, co-workers or friends), and “socially prescribed” perfectionism, where the person feels external pressure from the larger world and society to be perfect. https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/11/27/20975989/perfect-mental-health-perfectionism --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thecreative/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecreative/support
