135. Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: How Forensic Science Is Exposing Hidden Danger Lurking in Florida's Coastal Communities And Beyond; with Terry Gibson, Programs Lead - Florida, Deploy/US

1h 27m · Published 29 Jun 03:06

When Florida's citizens and tourists flock to coastal waters this weekend and over Independence Day early next week, they'll unwittingly be exposing themselves to human effluent. It can't be seen or touched, so nobody considers the problem or perils associated with it; however, the pathogenic bacteria, pharmaceuticals, and many other substances originating from septic tanks and other sub-standard wastewater infrastructure are ever-present in Florida's coastal estuaries Numerous independent, peer reviewed research projects utilizing forensic science are all coming into alignment to provide indisputable evidence that human waste pollution is widespread within Florida's waterways and is acting as the primary source, a superfood if you will, for harmful algal blooms (HABs).

Our guest this week, Mr. Terry Gibson, is the Florida Programs Lead for Deploy/US which is a bipartisan network of expertise focused on leadership in climate change policy. Terry walks us through the most recently published study in laymen's terms, discusses the positive political momentum that's building to help bring sustainable changes to Florida's wastewater infrastructure, and much more. This is an extremely insightful conversation that you don't want to miss and one that needs to reach as many ears and minds as possible so we hope you'll be sure to share it widely within your circle of friends and without.

Forgotten Flagship Of The Florida Keys: The Story of Capitana Rubi El Segundo And The 1733 Hurricane

48m · Published 15 Jun 17:36

At the height of the Spanish Empire, convoys of tall ships braved the seas hauling resources and treasure on transatlantic trade routes fraught with peril, especially during the summer months when hurricanes could develop without warning. In one of the worst maritime disasters ever recorded, the 1733 Hurricane descended upon part of Spain's West Indies Fleet led by the Capitana El Rubi Segundo ravaging the fleet against the Florida Reef paralleling the Florida Keys. This is her story; one that was lost until 1938 when she was rediscovered by a commercial fisherman.

133. Robert Is Here: Spotlighting An Iconic Piece of Old Florida; with Brandon Moehling

Anyone who has ever skirted the west side of Miami trekking southward to Everglades National Park or the Florida Keys has undoubtedly heard about the infamous Robert Is Here fruit stand. Since their simple beginnings as a roadside produce stand in 1959, they've grown into a mainstay attraction in southeast Florida for thousands of fans. From locally grown produce and other farm fresh products to their notorious fruit milkshakes and more, they've got something for everyone including serving as a rehab/foster care facility for a variety of animals. If you're a regular customer, you might learn some lesser known facts from this podcast episode, and if you've never visited them before then this is sure to light a fire under your fanny to get by there and see them. On a recent trip home from Key West, I stopped by to visit with Brandon Moehling about his family's history and the future of Robert Is Here. We enjoyed a fast paced, casual conversation so I've gone ahead and added the "explicit" warning for anyone with sensitive ears and/or feelings.

131. Cowgirl Poetry For Mrs. Imogene

38m · Published 10 May 04:05
Florida's ranching community recently lost a great champion with the passing of Mrs. Imogene Yarborough of Geneva, Florida. She was a lifelong advocate for beef and the preservation of our cow culture heritage so it seemed only fitting to share some cowgirl poetry dedicated to her memory. The poem selections chosen each spoke to her attributes in one way or another so I hope y'all enjoy this episode and if you feel so inclined, please look up the Florida Cattlemen's Foundation online and make a donation/contribution on her behalf.
