128. A Passionate Appetite For Conservation; with Adam Steele

45m · Published 05 Apr 04:01
Adam Steele is passionate about cooking, Florida, and conservation even if it's not necessarily in that order. Adam is a man of many talents and well-versed in many subjects so it's no small wonder that we forged a quick friendship. As someone who moved to Florida and fell in love with her natural beauty for what it is versus trying to change it and someone who uses his culinary skills as an outreach tool to educate both sportsmen and non-sportsmen alike regarding the benefits of resource conservation, I knew he'd make a great guest on the podcast. Two things I'm sure of: 1) you'll enjoy this conversation; and 2) it's going to make you hungry!

127. Granddaddy Said We'd Be Here: An Interview From The 80's Predicting Today's Florida And More

51m · Published 22 Mar 04:47

I recently turned up a copy of a newsletter from back in the mid 1980's, where my Granddaddy did an interview with the publication team from Cattlemen For Christ discussing his thoughts on the state of the beef industry at that time and where he thought it was headed in the future. As the ancient idiom from Ecclesiastes made clear, there is nothing new under the sun. Join us for a look at Granddaddy's prescient thoughts as we read through his Q & A session demonstrating just how true his predictions came to be across Florida and our nation as a whole in these current times.

36m · Published 15 Mar 17:40
For our annual St. Patrick's Day episode, we reflect upon cattle as the supreme source of wealth in Ancient Ireland and some of the many ways that those cultural influences came to bear on Florida.

Since our show is heavily focused on honoring our heritage and we're closing in on St. Patrick's Day, what better time than now to take a look at the origins of the Corned Beef and Cabbage meal? And while most of us knew that St. Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland but did you know that he was also a cowboy? We dig into the Rian Bó Phádraig (Track of St. Patrick's Cow) in the second half of this special episode that's sure to surprise and enlighten you.

125. Good Horses To Ride: A Conversation With Mr. Ham Brown

59m · Published 02 Mar 20:09
Within the ranching community and performance horse circles, the name Ham Brown is synonymous with high quality horses filled with a whole lot of cow sense. His family first settled in Florida back in the 1800's so his roots run quite deep in Osceola County. In this episode, we touch on his early days working cattle across the state, his career in the cutting horse circuit, and plenty other memories of a Florida that's quickly disappearing.

If not, tune in today to get the full backstory that's filled with charismatic characters, fast boats, and smuggling in Old Florida.

1h 4m · Published 19 Jan 12:12
There are those in Florida who pay lip service to conservation and then there are those individuals keenly committed to the cause through integrity and action. People like the guests on this week's episode. Mike Elfenbein is the chairman of the Cypress Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America and Nick Szabo is the founder of AguaCulture with a focus on restoring and maintaining an ecological balance between Florida's waterways and human activity which impacts them. In this week's conversation, we take a candid look at the many positive things happening for water quality and conservation in Florida as well as the roadblocks and red tape which repetitively hinder long term momentum and lasting solutions.

121. Poetry From The Pasture: Remembering Baxter On HIs Birthday

32m · Published 12 Jan 01:54
Welcome to Season 4 and we're kicking things off with some poetry from the pasture! In this episode, I chose to share six of Baxter Black's poems to remember him and celebrate what would've been his 78th birthday. He was a fine human, a clever writer with a gift for capturing humor in nearly every situation, and we lost him far too soon. Hope y'all enjoy these selections and that they add a laugh or two in your day.
