E151: Is Ozempic The Cure for Alcoholism?

35m · Published 07 Nov 12:00

Welcome to a groundbreaking episode of the Sober Friends Podcast, where we delve into the future of addiction treatment and recovery. We're here to discuss an astonishing development - a potential game-changer in the fight against addiction.

This episode is proudly sponsored by our friend Pete B., who understands the significance of our message and bought us five coffees. Thank you, Pete! Your support means the world to us. If you share Pete's belief in the importance of our podcast, head over to buymeacoffee.com/soberfriendspod and show your support. Give what you feel you've gained from our show, and let's keep this vital conversation going.

Science may have stumbled upon a potential antidote to addiction, and it goes by the name of Soma Semaglutide, commonly known as Ozempic.

Ozempic, originally developed as a miracle drug for diabetes and weight loss, has shown some fascinating potential in other areas. Not only does it assist in controlling cravings and obsessions, but it also offers hope in curbing problem drinking. We're referencing an intriguing article from The Atlantic, aptly titled "Scientists Accidentally Invent an Anti-Addiction Drug," which we'll link to for those interested in further reading.

So, what does this groundbreaking development mean for those in recovery? Can a single shot truly prevent problem drinking?

Steve shares his insights on this discovery, emphasizing the importance of not jumping to conclusions just yet. While the potential is promising, we are still far from fully understanding the drug's effects. It's essential to remember that recovery isn't solely about removing the physical aspects of addiction. The inner work, emotional growth, and transformation are equally crucial. Will this miracle drug inadvertently encourage people to search for an "easier, softer way"?

Matt highlights the drug's potential to help individuals who are on the brink of full-blown alcoholism, providing a barrier to crossing that line. It's a fascinating concept, and we ponder the possibility of integrating this drug into a comprehensive recovery program.

Could Ozempic be a lifeline for newcomers, giving them a much-needed runway to work on their recovery? We explore this notion as we weigh the promise of this drug against the potential risks.

Decoding the Big Book - There Is A Solution

32m · Published 27 Oct 11:00

In this installment, we unravel the mysteries of "There Is a Solution," the second chapter of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, authored by none other than Bill Wilson himself. Bill explores the inner workings of the alcoholic's mind and reveals that the real problem lies in our thinking, especially in that critical moment just before taking that fateful first drink. Could it be a form of temporary insanity? Bill certainly thinks so.

But fear not, dear listeners, for there is hope! Bill lays out a roadmap to recovery, one that includes self-searching, humbling our pride, and facing our sins head-on. It may not sound easy, but as Bill explains, it's the path to freedom from the grips of alcoholism.

Join us as we uncover the purpose behind this chapter, which is to answer the age-old question: "How and why do we recover from the hopeless condition of alcoholism?" Bill challenges us to identify as one of two kinds of drinkers: the moderate, "take it or leave it" type, and the heavy drinker who can't seem to stop, even when faced with health problems. But for the real alcoholic, Bill's words hit home.

Whether you're on a journey to recovery or simply seeking to understand the human spirit, Bill Wilson's insights will leave you inspired and eager to explore the road to a better life. Tune in now and let the journey begin!
