Jeff vonKaenel attended UC Santa Barbara in 1969, where he was heavily involved in anti-war activism, civil rights, and environmental causes. He was a part of the 1st Earth Day in 1970 and became frustrated with the political climate after Nixon's re-election. Taking advantage of new technology, he and a group of activists started one of the first alternative newspapers in the country in 1973. Their work led to significant victories, including winning city council elections and getting the district attorney indicted, showcasing the power of controlling the narrative through media.
