A Look Back at Why We All Need Sunscreen

21m · Published 05 Jul 09:30

In honor of Well+Good’s inaugural SPF Awards, we’re laying it on thick. With so many sunscreen products to apply, there’s really no excuse for skipping the crucial skin-care step. Any dermatologist will tell you that the “best” sunscreen is the one you’ll wear every day, but we’re getting a bit more specific with product recommendations.

In this episode, board-certified dermatologist Adeline Kikam, DO, FAAD, Supergoop founder Holly Thaggard, and Black Girl Sunscreen founder Shontay Lundy highlight the importance of inclusive sunscreen products and bridging the information gap of sun safety.

Learn more about our 2023 SPF Award picks here

HOST: Taylor Camille, Director of Podcasts at Well+Good

GUESTS:

Shontay Lundy, Founder of Black Girl Sunscreen

Dr. Adeline Kikam, Dermatologist and Founder of Brown Skin Derm

Holly Thaggard, Founder of Supergoop!

WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT:

Shontay shares how her experience as a woman of color informed her relationship with sunscreen as a child and young adult; when she couldn’t find a product that didn’t cast a white tint on her skin, she decided to create her own. Check her out here, and check out Black Girl Sunscreen here.

Dr. Kikam breaks down the technical side of why we all need to take sun protection seriously, and how we can use media and marketing to re-shape perceptions when it comes to making the suncare industry more inclusive. Find her here.

Holly walks us through the story behind Supergoop! and actionable steps we can take to stop the skin cancer epidemic. You can find her here, and Supergoop! here.
