Quitting, Second Jobs, Pivoting & Resting

As always, check out our Substack for a full list of show notes, ramblings and recommendations

This week we delve into the the tricky subject of when you feel like you want to throw in the towel, and give up trying to make ‘ends meet’ as an artist…

First, Julie chats about why she’s feeling peppy and shares her enthusiasm over her newest cloudscapes. Phoebe shares how the winter school holidays are going, how she survived a long car journey and her plans for a local kids art workshop.

This brings them onto the topic, as Phoebe reveals she’s been finding it challenging running an art business lately. They chat about the pitfalls of being self employed during a time when the economy is struggling, and what other options there are out there for artists. Julie boulsters Phoebe’s moral and reminds her of all the ways she’s diversified her income stream, and they discuss how feeling like ‘quitting’ can really just be a motivator to explore new directions or just to press pause on full time arting, and perhaps supplement your income another way - and how none of these makes you a failure.

We have never had so many people DM us about a topic before, so next week we’ll be dedicating a whole episode to answering your listener questions around quitting. If you have any more questions please drop us a line and let us know.

Unravelling Perfectionism - Part 2

1h 0m · Published 09 Jul 15:00

Check out our substack for a full set of show notes: https://faillikeanartist.substack.com/

This week, Julie chats about how her photoshoot went, and Phoebe reveals how she got over a fwobble. She also reveals her big news - that her artwork is now being represented in Australia by Greenhouse Interiors!

In this episode we carry on the conversation around perfectionism. We dig a bit deeper into how perfectionism affects our art practices, how it shows up in sneaky ways - even the recording of the podcast…

Quotes:

Paul Valéry “a work is never completed, but merely abandoned.”

“The imperfections are what connect us so often. We strive for perfection to belong, to be loved and to have approval, and yet what connects us more than anything is the imperfections of our journey” - The Imperfects Podcast.

Unravelling Perfectionism - Part 1

45m · Published 02 Jul 15:00

This week Julie discusses how lucky she feels to love her job, her impending photoshoot and her struggle with writing a newsletter. Phoebe is sick of the rain, feeling likes she’s failing at remembering important things and has finally sent off an important parcel of artwork. She has been procrastinating, which leads them into this week’s topic of perfectionism. What is perfectionism and how does it show up for them both? Do they even consider themselves perfectionists?

Positivity during difficult times

1h 5m · Published 25 Jun 15:00

In this episode we delve into the topic of positivity, after a listener asked if we would consider changing the podcast title to something more ‘positive’. Julie and Phoebe chat about their thoughts on this idea, and why they decided to use the word ‘fail’ in the podtcast title in the first place. This leads them into a deeper dive into the concept of positivity. It’s not always easy to stay positive when life throws you lemons, (and you’re out of gin and your tonic has gone flat) sometimes you don’t want to ‘smile’ and put on a brave face. So what else can we do? They reflect on how they turn difficult situations around - using analogies about marigolds and onions…

Juggling porridge & listener Q's

1h 14m · Published 18 Jun 15:01

This week on the pod Julie’s household has been hit by yet another bout of illness, causing her to fret over more missed studio time. Phoebe debriefs Julie on how her first ‘Sip and Paint’ art workshop went… and it brings up some profound realisations about why she has avoided teaching for so long. Julie realised she may now not be able to complete as many artworks for her exhibition, but shares a podcast she listened to that had a positive impact on the way she viewed this - realising that its only her that cares about the number of artworks, and the importance of enjoying the process rather than becoming stressed over a fixed outcome. Then they move on to answering listener questions, and share their advice on topics ranging from studio lighting and creating engaging instagram posts, to overcoming creative block and getting over the fear of getting crickets when you share your work.

Enjoy!

From sunbathing to surrendering...

57m · Published 11 Jun 15:00

Woohoo! We’re back after a two week break - a break that almost broke Julie! We really missed recording and chatting to each other, and had so much to tell each other that this episode ended up just being a ‘catch up’ chat, rather than the Q&A episode we had planned (that will be coming next week instead). We hope you enjoy this informal, funny chat that’s even less structured or professional than ever!

We discuss holidaying with kids and how challenging the reality of it can be, almost as challenging as saying the word “Worcestershire”! Julie is also struggling to name her upcoming exhibition, but shares how every cloud has a silver lining - her Fiji cloud photos have sparked a new creative direction…Phoebe updates us about her ‘fwobble’ and talks about how letting go of her word of the year has led to some surprising things happening. She also shares about a new venture that is out of her comfort zone - but she’s facing the fear and doing it anyway!

We hope you enjoy!

Anxiety, success and having a ‘fwobble’

1h 11m · Published 21 May 15:00

In this week’s episode Phoebe shares her ‘panic and the pizzeria’ and her decision to change her ‘word’ of the year. She talks about how this year she has felt like she has been on the backfoot and talks about the anxiety that she's been struggling with because of this. Julie lets us know how she got on at her first ‘artist meet-up’ social event, wonders whether she’s been taking photos illegally and reveals a solution to her hunt for pliers! She shares that she's feeling time pressured to be able to adhere to her own deadline, especially with a holiday looming - will she be able to relax??!

They both delve into the idea of success and what this means to them. What is the difference between pride and success? And why can’t Julie say she’s successful!? It's a tricky topic and it brings up some interesting thoughts and feelings!

AI & Art - Is it Intelligence or Insanity?

1h 10m · Published 14 May 15:00

In this episode Phoebe and Julie open the can of worms that is AI in art. They discuss this rapidly evolving new technology and its impact in the art world. And what a messy can of worms it is! They acknowledge that with this landscape changing so rapidly, the information they share may well be out of date very quickly. They try to keep the conversation neutral however it does occasionally swerve into their own personal opinions…

They (do their best to) answer listener questions about the use of AI in art and also the concerns over copyright, how AI image generators collect their data via ‘scraping’ and the potential risks this poses to artists. Also what impact the use of AI might have to those artists who create digital or graphic design work. They acknowledge that AI can have many benefits to artists such as short cutting some mundane creative processes, or how easy it can be to create ‘original’ source images, and how text AI generators can help those who struggle with writing. They also touch on the ethical and environmental implications around AI and talk about the need for development of regulations around the creation of AI art.

We may or may not end the show with Phoebe rapping a “Fail Like An Artist” rap created by ChatGPT…

Odd socks, crocs and the importance of art friends

1h 4m · Published 07 May 15:00

As an artist, experiencing self-doubt and loneliness is inevitable, especially since many of us tend to work alone. In this episode, Julie shares her struggles with self-doubt and exhibition worries, & how she overcame a recent experience of the 'comparison trap' with the help of her art friends. Phoebe expresses concern that Julie is working too hard (does she ever sleep?) shares some exciting news about her crocs*, and discusses her own current struggle with her work being stuck in the 'messy middle' stage. They also discuss they divided opinion of “should socks match” and introduce The Fail Scale - where are they at this week? If 1 is “whoops I spilled my paint water” and 10 is “whoops I burned down my studio”??

The conversation then shifts to the importance of having 'studio buddies' and how having an artist friend to talk to can help us overcome difficult moments more easily. If you are seeking a studio bestie, you can use the hashtag #FLAAPfriends in your posts or stories to let other artists know that you are open to connecting with someone. Remember that it's not necessary to meet up or even be in the same country - virtual support buddies can be just as valuable as in-person friends!

"Shut up, you can" and other motivational quotes

58m · Published 30 Apr 15:00

We’re back baby!! We hope you’ve missed us in your ears because we’ve certainly missed podcasting. This week the format has changed slightly, firstly you’ll notice the pod has dropped at the beginning of the week, (yay you can now plan your entire week around when to listen!) and secondly since we hadn’t had a proper chat for a while, we decided to keep this episode more of a catch up rather than focusing on one particular topic. There definitely still fails in here though! Julie chats about her mission of setting herself a deadline to finish an ambitious amount of paintings and Phoebe…fails a lot…! And you’ll have to listen to find out why!
