5 Well-paying Positions in Film

4m · Published 12 Nov 17:00

If you’re looking to get into film, whether that be in front of the camera or behind it, thinking about which direction to head in order to land the most lucrative position is most likely at the forefront of your mind. As in any search for gigs, it’s best to get a good understanding about what’s available in the industry and the average range of how much each position should pay. What is the pay range for actors? Which behind-the-scenes positions might be worth your while? We’ve done some of that work for you; here are five of the best paying film positions for you to consider.

Here is the first well-paying film position.

If you’re set on becoming the next film star, you’re going to want to take on featured roles. Of course, you’ll likely have to build your resume up a bit before you’re able to land one, but, ultimately, a ‘featured’ role is where the money is at. If you work hard enough to climb up the ladder, you can eventually be making six figures or more.

Here is the second well-paying film position.

If you don’t care so much about seeing your face on the screen and are focused more on a path that is going to land you a luxury lifestyle behind it, you may want to consider taking the producer route. A film producer can make as much as $100,000 or more a year, with the average salary in Los Angeles around $150,000 (which is on the higher end). Of course, at the end of the day, this number depends on how well the film does in the box office.

Here is the third well-paying film position.

Directors can make just as much as producers, at an average of about $110,000. But, because directors are responsible for the artistic direction of the film, they have big shoes to fill. If you’re looking for a challenging yet exciting gig in which you’ll be able to use your creativity to bring a storyline to life, this may be the perfect role for you.

Here is the fourth well-paying film position.

There are a lot of opportunities to become a screenwriter. This is a demanding position in which you’ll have the ability to bring your creative inputs to the table and build a storyline from scratch. You’ll also be able to work closely with a film’s director to ensure your vision is brought to life. Screenwriters can make as much as $1 million for a single script – which is what the movie Basic Instinct raked in (and the screenwriter was a consider a ‘newbie’ in the field at the time!). The average salary for a screenwriter is around $80,000 annually, which varies widely by how much quality content the writer generates.

Here is the fifth well-paying film position.

Another behind-the-scenes option that will ensure you bring home a good wage is the role of a cinematographer – whom is the person responsible for filming. These artistic minds make about $50,000 annually. So, if you’re always the one filming your friends, you may want to consider making a career of it!

These are just a few of the many options when it comes to a career in film. You can easily search for other positions and opportunities online and usually for specific openings that interest you. Often, given enough hard work and determination in the entertainment industry, a well paid compensation is in the cards.

4 Entertainment Hotspots to Keep in Mind

4m · Published 08 Nov 17:00

If you’re locating for a hotspot to relocate so you can book more gigs, it’s a good idea to get to know all of the nation’s cities that are prime places for entertainment. Of course, you may have heard that you should relocate to Los Angeles or New York City. But what are some of the other places to consider? These often get overlooked. Here’s a list of well-known entertainment hubs to keep in mind:

Here is the first entertainment hotspot to keep in mind.
Atlanta, Georgia, is a well-known hotspot for its television and film industry. There are also many comedy clubs for jokesters and background casting opportunities in featured films. It’s also not so far from Disney World should you decide to be part of the theme park’s (or cruise ship’s) cast. Tyler Perry Studios is located in Atlanta and is always looking for new faces. What’s more, Marvel Films does a lot of its productions there and there are many casting companies and agencies looking to fill their rosters of talent.

Here is the second entertainment hotspot to keep in mind.
Las Vegas, Nevada, is also a great hotspot for stage acting, of course, on the strip. And there are casting directors that film a very of projects – everything from television commercials to featured films. Los Vegas is the backdrop of a ton of films and reality shows, and its fairly close to Los Angeles with the cost of living much more bearable for actors who are just getting started.

Here is the third entertainment hotspot to keep in mind.
San Francisco, California, has a big theater following and many movies are filmed in the city. Because of San Fran being a happening hotspot for the performing arts community, there are tons of opportunities for classes and workshops. Of course, you can also take a trip to Los Angeles to expand your reach.

Here is the fourth entertainment hotspot to keep in mind.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is known for being a thriving performance arts hotspot as well. There are tons of opportunities to get booked in Indies, shorts and student films, as well as theater work and commercials. There are also voiceover gigs available and a lot of actors get their start in Philadelphia and travel to auditions in both New Jersey and New York City. (Which brings up another good market – New Jersey. This is also a hub for many of the same projects and an easy commute to NYC.)

Of course, New York and Los Angeles are two of the prime cities that actors flood to, thinking they have to live in one of the two in order to make it. Not true. These other markets often get overlooked but offer just as many gigs. Moving to a market that is still happening and costs less living-wise is a smart move that will help you quickly build your resume. Once you get a few credits under your belt you can consider NYC or LA, and you’ll have the background in another hotspot to get booked in some of the biggest productions.

5 Hair and Makeup Tips for Your Next Audition

5 Hair and Makeup Tips for Your Next Audition

When it comes to styling your hair and choosing the right makeup palette for your next audition, it’s important to remember that casting directors want to see you. You were invited to audition for a role because your headshot matched what the CD was looking for. That being said, if you choose just the right amount of makeup and a hairstyle that landed you an audition, you’re doing something right. Here are some tips for nailing it and booking the part:

Here is the first makeup tip for your next audition.
Wear colors that match your headshot. You don’t want to go with an all-too-different look and surprise the CD, in a negative way, when you go to the audition and don’t appear to be the same person in the picture. If your headshot brought you to the audition room, stick with that palette.

Here is the second makeup tip for your next audition.
In general, you’ll want to wear makeup that is more natural and let’s your features stand out. You can up-play those features you feel are your best and downplay the rest. Wear makeup that blends well, including any foundation, correctors and concealers you use. You can up-play your eyes, cheekbones or mouth with colors that let these areas stand out, should you choose.

Here is the first hair tip for your next audition.
Again, you’re going to want to go with something that is similar to what’s in your headshot. You don’t want to drastically change your hair color or length prior to the audition. It’s best to stick with what you looked like when you booked your photo shoot and chose the final copy to pass along. If you walk into the room looking like someone completely different, it is not only going to be difficult for the CD to get past this and focus on what you’re saying, but it’ll probably mean you don’t match what the team needs to begin with, so you may not book the role.

Here is the second hair tip for your next audition.
You’ll want to wear your hair the way it is naturally, just like the makeup colors you choose. A CD is going to want to see you for who you truly are and is going to assess whether you fit the role based on this. So, if you have curls, leave your hairy curly. If you have naturally light brown hair, don’t bleach it or put rainbow colors in that are not part of how you would normally present.

Here is the third hair tip for your next audition.
Just keep your look consistent with who you are and, after you’re booked, the CD will let you know if you should change anything. Don’t change your look halfway through a project without asking. You will likely have your hair and makeup styled for you while you’re on set. The last thing you’ll want to do it change it up without asking and compromise the whole crew by not being able to continue shooting.

These are just a few of the more vital hair and makeup tips you should always follow between the headshot phase and the completion of a project. If you would like to change up your look after a project wraps, always get new photos taken. This way, everyone knows what to expect and you’ll come across as professional and ready to work!

3 Ways to Build a Stand-Out Resume Quickly

4m · Published 01 Nov 20:00

As in any industry, a stand-out resume is a must have if you want to make it to the top. It can be a challenge to build credits and it takes a lot of time and patience. In the beginning, you’ll have to really hustle in order to start filling up that white space! Not to worry, you’ll get there! Here are some of the best ways you can build up your resume quickly.

Here is the first way to build a stand-out resume quickly.
When you first get started, you’ll probably have to take on a few gigs that aren’t necessarily your “dream” opportunities. However, remaining open-minded and pursuing any potential bookings will help you put ink into paper quickly. The more you take on, the less white space there will be, and more doors will open for you. So, it’s crucial to not be overly picky. Of course, you’ll want to steer clear of anything that seems shady, but that doesn’t mean you should you turn down everything. At the same time, the faster you build your resume, the less patience you’ll have to have, as you’ll be on your way to accepting those more appealing gigs in no time!

Here is the second way to build a stand-out resume quickly.
Another tip is to have knowledge of, and access to, as many job boards as possible in order to build your resume as quickly as possible. You’ll want network by connecting on social media, casting websites, and in acting groups. Make sure you sign up for accounts and start adding yourself to pages, groups, and discussion boards. Some casting sites are free, while others require a monthly or annual fee. But, at the end of the day, the more connected you are, the more likely it is you’ll find a gig in your area for which you can audition and get booked for.

Here is the third way to build a stand-out resume quickly.
Building your resume quickly sometimes means being open to traveling or even relocating, depending on your comfort level. If you live in an area in which there are not a whole lot of things happening, and you’re determined to make it to the top, this could mean you come up with a plan to get yourself opportunities that are not so close to home. Once you’re signed up and connected with numerous opportunities, most of the time you will gain access to pertinent information such as pay and perks. If you come across an opportunity that isn’t in your backyard but is worth it based on other criteria, and if it can help build your resume, you may want to give it a go!

Being successful in the entertainment industry means being able to build yourself a marketing package that is eye-catching and noteworthy. This usually takes both thinking outside of the box and keeping an open mind. Once you start getting booked, make sure you stay on top of adding each new gig to your documented experiences. This way you can keep track of your accomplishments and you’ll always have an updated resume to present to a casting director when asked.

4 Ways to Figure Out Your Acting ‘Type’

4m · Published 29 Oct 20:00

4 Ways to Figure Out Your Acting ‘Type’

No matter what acting medium you chose to pursue, understanding the type of characters you are able to play is a must in order to excel in the entertainment industry. This will give you a solid idea of which opportunities to go for and how to present yourself at auditions. It’s important to define your character types early on, even if you plan to expand your range by straying from your chosen path at a later point in your career. Here are some tips on how to discover what roles you were born to play.

Here is the first way to figure out your acting type.
Getting to know your acting type is based largely on the features that best define who you are as a person. These may include, but of course are not limited to: your gender, physical appearance, personality, age range, etc. It also may be just what ‘feels right’ when you consider who you are. There will be aspects of your personality and appearance that stand out, and these are the traits you’ll want to factor into your decision-making of what type of characters you’ll do well at portraying.

Here is the second way to figure out your acting type.
Because acting is a visual and emotional medium, an audience will want to connect deeply with the character that you play. Understanding what your ‘type’ is will help you be best prepared for a role that naturally fits you, so those who are watching your performance will instantly feel immersed in the storyline. When doing your research on the web for roles, ask yourself which ones do you connect with? Which would you be excited to audition for? Take a moment to consider the ‘why’ behind it all. There is a reason that some roles draw to you more than others. Figure out what makes you connect so easily with these characters and go with it.

Here is the third way to figure out your acting type.
You’ve probably noticed that all big-name actors have a type of character they are generally cast for. Sometimes it’s not so noticeable until they decide to take a role that is outside of their norm. Other times, it can be very noticeable for the simple fact that when you’re watching them, they’re a naturally great fit. The next time you’re viewing your favorite actor on the screen, ask yourself how you would define their ‘type’ in the role being played. Does it fit or is it more out of bounds when you think of the actor’s choice? Focusing in on another person’s role type can help you gain a better understanding of the process behind determining what your character type might be.

Here is the fourth way to figure out your acting type.
Another strategy for defining your character type might be making sure your thoughts are centered around it the next time you’re engaged in a conversation. What do you notice about the features of the individual you’re speaking to (i.e., appearance, the way they speak, their body language, etc.) that might help you identify what their ‘type’ is? What would that person say about yours? You may even want to ask them directly and take notes.

Once you are ready to audition for roles, keep in mind that just because you have a type mapped out for yourself, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to stick with it forever. It just shows that you’ve connected with who you are and how casting directors are likely to see you. This will give you a good starting point from which you can start building your resume. Remember, you can always branch out from there and recreate the types of characters you fit as often as you’d like!

3 Ways to Improve Your Improv Game

4m · Published 25 Oct 16:00

As you’re getting started in improv, there’s a good chance you’ve noticed it can be downright hard to do! Unlike more traditional acting roles in which you have a script to follow with lines to memorize, improv is a special art form that requires quick, on-the-spot thinking skills in addition to all of the must-haves for those who are successful actors. As intimidating as it may seem, fear not! Here are a few ways you can quickly and easily improve your improv game.

Here is the first way to improve your improv game.
Improv is all about being in the moment. If you want to really get good at doing this, practice keeping your thoughts in the present whenever you’re off the set. The more you practice this way of thinking, the easier it will get. It may not be intuitive, however, for many people to just be present without thinking into the future or reminiscing about the past. It also may sound simple, but it can be a challenge. Be patient with yourself as it can take time and it can be frustrating. Just like any other aspect of acting, it will be hard work. Think of building up your mindfulness skills as par for the course and one more way to make it to the top.

Here is the second way to improve your improv game.
Instead of staying in the mindset of believing that improv is hard, and there is no way you’re ever going to grasp it – remind yourself that in actuality, you do it all the time, without thinking, in everyday conversation. While you might get a chance to rehearse what you’re going to say to someone every once in a while, this is more uncommon than simply responding on the spot. Thinking of improv in this way should relieve some of the pressure that can leave you lost for words when it really counts. Of course, you’ll more than likely deliver your lines with more flare than you might when you’re just shooting the breeze with a friend. But once you can take your mind off of what to say next and concentrate on body language and hand gestures instead of those verbal cues, it can make performing much easier.

Here is the third way to improve your improv game.
If you’re concerned that you’ll respond too much like you do in day-to-day conversation and forget that you’re actually acting, go ahead and give the next few convos you have a little more enthusiasm than usual. If you’re more comfortable doing so, you can give the individuals you engage with a heads up that you’re hoping to practice a bit off stage. Chances are no one will care, and this will give you extra time to prepare so you can have a much-needed confidence boost the next time around.

Being an excellent improv actor is all about believing you’re an excellent improv actor. In other words, it has a lot to do with mindset more than anything else. Once you’re able to let go of some of the unneeded stress that’s holding you back, you’ll be able to volunteer to give it a go more often, with no problems at all! Now get out there and improv your heart out!

4 Simple Ways to Stay Booked

4m · Published 21 Oct 21:00

Being successful in the entertainment industry means building a resume that will help you make it to the top, and the only way to do that is to get – and keep getting – booked. What steps can you take to make this happen? Here are a few simple ways to stay busy.

Here is the first way to stay booked.
First thing’s first. You’ll want to dedicate time to researching potential opportunities online that will help you get to where you’re hoping to head. Apply to as many castings as you can in your area that may interest you. It really is a numbers game when you first get started, and the more experience under your belt, the better. Yes, you will be rejected by some, but it only takes one call back to jumpstart your career and get booked. The more effort you put out, the more likely you are to succeed.

Here is the second way to stay booked.
Before you start receiving callbacks for opportunities, make sure you clear your schedule enough to be able to say ‘yes’ when the time comes. You don’t want to be on the phone with a casting director or, even worse, in person at an audition, and have to say, ‘Sorry, I have other obligations.’ Casting directors who hear excuses over and over again will give up and spend their time and energy elsewhere.

Here is the third way to stay booked.
You’ll probably have to take on a few gigs at first that are not as glamorous as you may have anticipated. Of course, you always want to make sure anything you’re applying for is legitimate and that you’re not going to get scammed. However, you may have to sprinkle in some smaller bookings in order to stay busy. Consider your efforts to stay booked like buying a home. While it’s perfectly okay to have an over-the-top wish list of nice-must-haves when house hunting, often, you’ll have to make some compromises.

Here is the fourth way to stay booked.
At the end of the day, staying booked comes down to how determined and motivated you are to put yourself out there and to start building a resume that reflects these efforts. You’ll find you get out of this what you put in. So, even if you maintain a 9 to 5 day job and apply during your breaks, take every opportunity you can to start getting your name out there. As you begin to receive replies, you may have to make alternate plans. But try your best to focus on the present and do what you can until you cross that bridge. If it requires you to juggle a few things to get to where you want to be, think of these as necessary stepping-stones for growth rather than a permanent situation.

Every actor wants to make it to a point in their career where it’s easy to stay booked, and to be able to turn away gigs because they have the leverage to be more selective. However, this is easier to do down the road when you’re more established than it is at the very beginning. Follow these simple steps and you’ll have the opportunity to be selective once you’ve gotten your feet wet, and you’ll be well on your way to accomplishing your goals!

5 Clever Tips for Hiding Scars

4m · Published 21 Oct 20:00

If you have a photo shoot, audition or an open call coming up, chances are if you have them, you may be feeling self-conscious about visible scars. You’ve probably seen many actors and actresses with scars, and these, for the most part, aren’t a big deal other than the fact that they can make you overthink and distract you from giving your all. If you’re looking to minimize distractions or feel the need to cover your imperfection before you head out, here are a few clever ways to do so.

Here is the first clever tip for hiding scars.
If you have scars on your forehead
, near your hairline, or on your neck, try a switching up your hairstyle to instantly cover them up! This way you don’t have to worry about applying scar removal cream, which can be effective, but usually takes time to be effective. Try searching the web for inspiration and find yourself the most effective way to cover a scar with a new hairdo.

Here is the second clever tip for hiding scars.
Along the same lines as a new hairstyle, you may find you’re able to cover your scars by simply switching up your wardrobe. Wearing certain clothing can be an easy yet impactful way to cover them up depending on their location. This method also allows for you to conceal them effortlessly and quickly.

Here is the third clever tip for hiding scars.
Perhaps try wearing accent jewelry! Often times these can disguise neck or wrist scars. You could even wear a bangle on your bicep if this is where the unwanted mark is located. Getting clever with the jewelry you wear not only accomplishes your goal of masking an imperfection but can also be a fun way to add some pizazz to your wardrobe and will help to separate you from the competition.

Here is the fourth clever tip for hiding scars.
A longer yet more effective process would be to seek out treatments that aim to eliminate scars completely. The best ones will be prescribed by a dermatologist, but there are also effective over-the-counter creams and ointments that will do the trick. Check out the aisles of your local pharmacy and try one out if you have a some time before the big day. Be patient – they won’t eliminate marks overnight. If you’ve given over-the-counter treatments a go and you’ve found you’re not satisfied, seeking out a dermatologist is a great option to help you get rid of your unwanted scars.

Here is the fifth clever tip for hiding scars.
Applying the right shade of concealer is sometimes all you need to quickly hide minor skin blemishes before you head out the door. Of course, it’s best to give yourself enough time to be confident about the one you choose. You’ll want to make sure it matches the color of your skin as closely as possible and opt for a reliable, long-lasting product. This way you can shift your attention away from your imperfections and focus on what you do best; performing! Head to your local makeup store and chat with a beauty consultant or do some research to find the right concealer for you.

These are just a few clever, yet simple ways you can cover just about any scar. Keep in mind, covering up your scars may not even matter to the person who will be deciding whether you book a gig! But if it makes you feel more comfortable and on your A-game, then it may be worth it. At the end of the day, feeling your most confident is key!

4 Ways to Say ‘No’ Without Burning a Bridge

4m · Published 21 Oct 20:00

Not every offer you’ll get over the course of your entertainment career will seem appealing. In fact, some may be outright deceitful, presented by scam artists and something you’ll definitely want to avoid. While it can be difficult to spot scams or hard to say ‘no’ to an opportunity that you feel wouldn’t advance your career, here are a few ways to decline these offers gracefully.

Here is the first way to say ‘no’ without burning a bridge.
One of the best skills you can develop as an entertainer is the ability to listen and trust your own intuition. Some people find this comes easier than others, but overall, it is a learned skill that can be mastered with time and practice. Trust yourself first and foremost. If your gut is telling you an offer isn’t worth pursuing, it’s best to just say ‘no’ and to walk away. First, thank the person extending the opportunity, then let them know now isn’t the best time or simply that it doesn’t seem right for you. Remember, you are in control of your path and are allowed to pass up offers without explaining yourself in great detail.

Here is the second way to say ‘no’ without burning a bridge.
It can be difficult to say ‘no’, but keep in mind it is still possible to maintain a working relationship despite turning down a gig by keeping the individual’s contact information handy. This ensures you’ll be able to be in touch for future use in case something else comes up that may be right for you. This seems like common sense, but all too often entertainers get so caught up in trying to build their resumes and fill their schedules with gigs that they regrettably accept every opportunity that presents itself without giving it a second thought. If you’re too busy or consumed with other projects, let the person know this and that you’d love to work together on future opportunities. After all, it’s better than making a commitment you can’t keep.

Here is the third way to say ‘no’ without burning a bridge.
Another thing to keep in mind when you’re planning to say ‘no’, is that of course no one likes to be lied to. It’s important that you don’t create a made-up scenario for why you’re unable to pursue a project. It’s best to keep your responses short and sweet, and stick to the facts. The last thing you want to do is tell a fictional excuse and then be responsible to recall these details should you cross paths with whomever is asking to work with you in the future. It’s much easier and more professional to say “no” without lying to anyone. After-all, getting caught in a lie is not worth the embarrassment.

Here is the fourth way to say ‘no’ without burning a bridge.
When you say ‘no’, remember to stay confident in your response. If you seem wishy-washy or come across as not one-hundred percent sure of your decision, you could end up stringing the individual along. At which point, you’d end up having to give a firm ‘no’ later on in the process, and this is when you typically end up burning a bridge. Be certain of your choices, firm upfront, and once you’ve voiced your decision, stick with it.

The entertainment industry relies largely on networking, so it is very important that you don’t burn any bridges along the way. Learning to say ‘no’ without coming off as unappreciative or rude will ensure that you stay connected to those who could help you advance your career and to make a name for yourself in the future.

3 Challenges Every New Actor Faces

4m · Published 15 Oct 14:00

It’s no secret that acting is a challenging profession. Some of these challenges may be avoidable while others are not. Many of these challenges have a lot to do with an actor’s perspective of his or her abilities and they can be avoided, or at least made easier with practice. Here are three of the most common challenges that are simply a matter of mindset.

Here is the first challenge every new actor faces.
One of the biggest challenges that is self-imposed includes feeling the need to be ‘perfect’ at every audition and in every performance once booked. Perfectionism itself can be a fault more than a positive feature. While it is an integral part of human nature, it can easily be detrimental when taken to the extreme. Actors who put added pressure on themselves to avoid making mistakes at all costs, often (and ironically), find it much more difficult to perform up to their own expectations, and might even give up after making the littlest of ‘mistakes’. It’s important to view any perceived mistakes as learning experiences. Continue to hone your craft and correct yourself based on these experiences. Acting takes hard work, which means always picking yourself up after a failure and forging ahead.

Another common challenge is finding the courage to treat acting as a hobby rather than a career, even if it is your career. This contributes to the added pressure one puts on oneself to be successful. If acting is viewed as something you are doing because you enjoy it, rather than something you have to do to make money, this mindset will automatically help you perform better when it really matters. Have you ever heard the saying, “If you enjoy what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life?” If you focus on enjoying the act of acting, rather than thinking about it solely as a way to pay your bills, a good amount of pressure will be lifted and it will allow things to come more naturally to you. If you don’t, the opposite will inevitably be true. Any challenges you are faced with, will feel that much more overwhelming. Your pursuit of acting should be something you enjoy and not something to perpetually stress about.

Another challenge actors face is knowing when to proactively decide that any new offers they receive will need to be met with a ‘no’ upfront. As human beings, actors have limits. There is only so much a person can take on at once. However, it’s all too easy to view oneself as invincible until, well, you’re not. It’s important to have good boundaries and know when there isn’t enough room to continue to pile things onto your plate. Appreciating your acting career means finding some sense of balance so you can actually take a minute and give yourself credit for the talent and work you have. If you’re getting pulled in too many directions at once, you’ll spread yourself thin and quickly burn yourself out. Giving yourself time to breath and focusing on a manageable amount of workload will allow you to refine your skills, and continue forward without feeling entirely overwhelmed.

Even though acting can be challenging, there are many fun and exciting aspects as well. Yes, there will be times when obstacles are unavoidable. However, when it comes to challenges that involve merely a mindset, actively shifting into a more positive one will help you find joy and stay motivated in this life-long journey of acting.
