5 Questions You’ll Want to Ask Your Business Manager

4m · Published 11 Oct 17:00

So, you’ve landed a new business manager, congrats! This is a great step in the right direction career-wise. However, you’ll likely have a few questions about what, exactly, this partnership will look like and what to expect from this new representation. Here are a few questions you’ll want to ask up front to make the most of your time together.

Here is the first question you’ll want to ask your business manager.
When gearing up to get to work, you’ll want to know a few basics about what it even means to have a business manager in the first place. You’ll probably want to ask a few leading questions about what the relationship will offer, including their history. How long has this person been in the entertainment realm? What is their approach? And importantly, what they charge. A good general question might be, “Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your expertise?” This will give you a good idea of the manager’s approach and allow you to feel if it’ll be a good fit for you or not.

Here is the second question you’ll want to ask your business manager.
You should always know where your money is going. Will there be any upfront recurring costs, or is everything commission-based? What do these fees go towards, if any, and is it possible for you to obtain an actual breakdown of these costs in writing? At the end of the day, you’ll want to make sure your manager is advocating for you and is negotiating on your behalf, so it’s important to have some sort of documented proof that your needs will be met. Tell your business manager, “I’d like to get a better understanding of what this will cost.” And ask them to help you with it. At the end of the day, they are here to aid you, so asking these types of questions are not uncommon.

Here is the third question you’ll want to ask your business manager.
Another key question you’ll want to ask up front is how to best contact your new business manager. Of course, typical social guidelines should be followed, such as not flooding their inbox with tons of emails or calling them repeatedly throughout the day. But your manager should let you know which methods of contact are best for them. Asking them how they prefer to be contacted is a very reasonable request.

Here is the fourth question you’ll want to ask your business manager.
If your manager has an entirely different approach than what you had anticipated or you don’t really understand what the actual agreement entails, it is in your best interest to ask them for clarification. You might want to ask for more information or pose the question, “What makes your approach effective?”. Don’t be afraid to verify that you and your new business manager are on the same page.

Here is the fifth question you’ll want to ask your business manager.
You’re going to want to know the physical location of your business manager’s office and whether you’ll have regular, in-person meetings there. When that time comes, you’ll want to be sure you head to the right meeting place, especially if you’ve only had preliminaries over the phone. Ask for the name and location of the company for which your business manager is employed. You might ask, “Where would you like us to meet when it’s appropriate?”

These are just a start of some of the questions you may want to ask. The best thing to do is to create a list ahead of time and bring whatever questions that come to mind with you to the contract signing and to your first few meetings. Make sure, if anything comes up in between then that is pressing, to reach out to your business manager and to always feel comfortable with the responses you get.

3 Myths About Modeling

4m · Published 04 Oct 19:00

There are many myths about modeling that can easily be debunked so you can start strutting your stuff on the runway or posing for print gigs. If you’ve heard about any of these, you aren’t alone. These misconceptions keep many young people with big dreams of modeling from getting their start. Here are three of the most common myths.

Here is the first myth about modeling.
The first big myth about modeling is that you must be tall and have a very slender physique. Simply not true. There are modeling opportunities for everyone – with more than enough opportunities to go around. So, whether you’re getting a late start in the industry, you’re the shortest of your siblings or that don’t fit into a size zero, there is still a chance you can get into the game.

Modeling takes talent above all else and knowing the tricks of the trade is what counts! Knowing how to pose, smile, tilt your head the right way and learning which angles are your best is key. These are the things that photographers and the clients who hire them will be looking for. Companies often want to work with models who represent their target market – the types of people who will be buying their brands. Chances are good if the look you have is marketable and that you can market yourself.

Here is the second myth about modeling.
Another common myth about modeling is that it’s easy. Modeling is much more difficult and demanding than it looks. Shoots take hard work and often require long days or can span across multiple days. Those who have been in the business for a long time know that there is a ton of prep work that goes into a gig, and this often starts days, weeks, and sometimes months before! This preparation work is to ensure that everything the model does helps them to look their very best. From meal prep, to exercise and everything in between. Every detail counts, and there are many ways to make sure that their hair and skin look great, any bloat is eliminated, they don’t have bags under their eyes, and that overall, they look and feel their best for the day of the shoot.

Here is the third myth about modeling.
A third myth about modeling is that you must be in New York or Los Angeles to stay busy. Although it helps to be in a major city, many companies run marketing campaigns in every state and need models for their ads. This means that photo shoots are happening everywhere across the U.S., and you may be happily surprised to find that there are in fact opportunities for you close to home. This is where your internet skills and knowing how to properly navigate online job boards can be critically important. Certain social media groups post gigs all the time, and many businesses have Facebook and Instagram pages they use to share opportunities. You just need to know where to look!

There are many myths about modeling that keep potential rising stars from even giving it a go. Yes, actors can be models. Yes, there are many different types of modeling (i.e., print, high fashion, fitness, plus sized, and everything in between). Yes, men have equally as many opportunities as woman. It’s almost more difficult to not get booked once you start looking! Debunking these myths and misconceptions about modeling can help you build the confidence to get out there and give it a shot!

4 Problems to Avoid When Signing a Contract

4m · Published 04 Oct 19:00

If you’ve landed an agency contract or have any type of modeling or acting deal in the works, it’s important to understand a thing or two about how they work before you sign on the bottom line. Otherwise, you may end up putting yourself in a situation you’ll eventually regret and one from which it is difficult to break free of. Here are five problems you can avoid before your name is in permanent ink.

Here is the first problem to avoid when signing a contract.
You don’t want to get yourself in a sticky legal situation by not reading the contract fully and understanding it’s terms and conditions. One of the most important things to do before signing is to put your excitement aside just long enough to ensure you’ve had a chance to read the paperwork thoroughly, line by line. Yes, it can be tough to contain that excitement when you’ve landed your first deal, and rightfully so! But because you’ll want to get started right away, that calls for all the reasons to want to protect yourself. Entering a deal that is the most appealing for your own goals career-wise, and one you fully understand and accept, is likely to be one which you’re happy with for a long time to come.

Here is the second problem to avoid when signing a contract.
While you’re reading everything over, remember that the documents furnished to you are automatically written for whomever handed them over to you and with their best interest in mind. This means that the party who created the contract likely had it reviewed by their legal counsel and you’re being handed the final draft of a carefully crafted copy. Although this doesn’t mean that it was prepared in a way that is detrimental to you, it’s just something you should keep in mind. As you’re reviewing the terms and conditions make sure that you’re okay with the way things are worded and if they need to make any modifications to accommodate.

Here is the third problem to avoid when signing a contract.
The third problem to avoid when signing a contract is getting yourself into a situation in which you are giving up more than you’re gaining. If you’re not okay with signing away your rights to your images, to work with more than one company simultaneously or if you’re not comfortable with your likeness being used in any way the company deems fit, speak up. These sneaky clauses are sometimes sprinkled into legal jargon that can be tough to spot.

Here is the fourth problem to avoid when signing a contract.
Many contracts require that any disputes are handled in arbitration. In other words, if there is anything happening that is not to your liking and you want to do something about it, you won’t be able to take the opposite party to court. Arbitrators are also hired by the companies who create contracts, so it can at times be impossible to get a fair outcome. If you have any questions about the way disagreements are handled, always contact a contract lawyer.

These are some of the most common problems that many entertainers face. Knowing what to look for before you have a contract in front of you can help. Knowledge is power!

6 Reasons Why You Should Relocate

4m · Published 27 Sep 14:00

If you’re thinking about skipping town and heading to the big city because you’re fed up with the limited number of gigs in your rural area, but need a little extra incentive to relocate, here are six reasons to sway to you to do just that.

Here’s the first reason you should relocate.
Major cities like Los Angeles and New York have castings, literally, everywhere. Of course, you should be careful and ensure you’re dealing with promising gigs that will give your career a jumpstart in the right direction. Proceed with caution and make sure you’re on the look-out for red flags as you scour the web for nearby listings. But despite all the bad and questionable opportunities, there are so many that can go right and be well worth it, so relocating to these big cities can have big rewards!

Here’s the second reason you should relocate.
Big cities are where the action is! And it’s not only where the action is, but it’s where you’re sure to eventually get your career off the ground. You can get started on a smaller scale in a local market, but you’ll only be able to make it so far before biting the bullet and moving to somewhere that you’re sure to find larger scale opportunities to get your name in print. When you relocate to bigger markets, you will see your career start to climb.

Here’s the third reason you should relocate.
It’s easier to rub elbows with the right people in major cities. This are the hotspots where producers, directors, and well-known actors tend to hang out. So, you’re more likely to be able to attend events that they’re at once you relocate vs. staying in smaller markets. Networking is everything in entertainment. You should always want to do anything you can to make an impression and get your name out there – and by “there,” that typically means in Hollywood or New York City.

Here’s the fourth reason you should relocate.
Bigger markets equal bigger opportunities – it’s just that simple. You might get a role in an Indie or Student Film close to home, but if you’re looking for bigger opportunities, it’s more than likely bound to take place where big budget films do, in major cities. If you want to jumpstart your career, it makes sense to position yourself in the markets that book these projects.

Here’s the fifth reason you should relocate.
When you take the jump to relocate to a major city, you’ll find you have much larger access to resume building resources through the form of workshops and classes.
These are highly common and sought after in big cities, so you’ll find broad range of topics, and you’ll be sure to find something that you’re particularly interested in pursuing. Between this and the social networking setting they provide; they’ll be sure to help you advance in your career and upgrade your status among the entertainment community.

Here’s the sixth reason you should relocate.
Another exciting reason to relocate to a larger market is that there is so much more to take in entertainment-wise! There are Premiere parties happening constantly, runway shows, Red Carpet events, and many other must-sees. If you want to truly be in the middle of all the action while upping your chances of being seen, you’ll have to opt-in to packing your bags!

It’s not an easy decision to leave the life you know behind and to take a gamble in hopes that a move to a major city will pay off. But all that’s happening in the entertainment world is happening under those big bright magical city lights! It’s time to relocate, take a chance, and find out what you’ve been missing!

3 Secrets for Becoming the Next Supermodel

4m · Published 20 Sep 18:00

If you want to be a model, chances are you want to make it to Supermodel status. That way, you can make the most of your career and take it all the way to the top. You’ll be able to explore multiple mediums, from high end runway shows, to print, and everything in between. It’s every model’s dream! Of course, only a select few ever get this far. So how can you up your chances?

Here’s the first secret for becoming the next supermodel.
If you want to become the next supermodel – and who wouldn’t? – the first thing you should know is that it’s much easier to book gigs if you have someone doing the leg work for you. If you believe you have what it takes – the look and the technique – start by finding someone who agrees and is willing to invest the time into getting you booked. If you’re able to secure a talent agent at a top agency who can represent you, this is highly sought after and a big step in the right direction. It’s the best way to immerse yourself in the model world and glamorous fashion lifestyle quickly. That way you can start to see your name in print and strut your stuff on the runway. Always do your research on agencies to ensure they’re legit. Then, get yourself out there! Believe you have what it takes and start reaching out. There is no harm in exhausting every avenue until you’ve locked in an invite for an interview – or two, or several!

Here’s the second secret for becoming the next supermodel.
Perhaps one of the best kept secrets is that you don’t have to pay to have headshots ahead of time in order to approach an agency. The truth is, these headshots are not only expensive, but the agency will likely not use them at all. So, save yourself some cash and show up to the interview with your natural smile and confidence, ready to show off your looks, skill, and technique. They’re going to sign someone who appears to believe they have the “it” factor, and shows they are ready to work. The agency will help you to understand your next steps and pull together what you need to give you a leg up on the competition.

Here’s the third secret for becoming the next supermodel.
One thing you absolutely need to have as an aspiring model is a strong drive and the desire to hustle. You will be very busy, and your work ethic is everything. You will need to have the flexibility to clear your schedule whenever asked and head to the next gig at the drop of the hat. You’ll need the fortitude to keep going strong amid rejection and the resilience to pick yourself back up. Making it big takes hard work and dedication to the craft, which means many early mornings and late nights, especially when you’re first getting started. If you can keep your gusto, the reward will be worth the work you put in.

Being the next big supermodel isn’t just about looking good and posing in front of a camera. These are just some of the perks. It takes hard work and dedication! Know which direction you want to go in and be ready to start heading there. Be willing to give this journey all you have until you reach your destination at the top!

4 Ways to Avoid Problems with Your Agent

4m · Published 16 Sep 20:00

If you’ve scored a meeting with an agent, you are probably more than ecstatic about it! This is a significant step in the right direction career-wise. Now, you’ll want to get ready for the big day. There are a few things you’ll definitely want to have in your back pocket and there are also a few things that you’ll want to avoid. Here are some tips for avoiding problems with your agent

Here is the first way to avoid problems with your agent.
If you don’t know too much about the agency at which you’re interviewing, do your own research ahead of time. The last thing you’ll want to do is start asking questions you could have easily found answers to online. These resources are on the agent’s page for a reason. The questions just waste time in the interview room, which can stir up problems right off the bat. The agent will want to work with someone who has taken the initiative to gain some knowledge before the big day.

Here is the second way to avoid problems with our agent.
If you want to avoid problems with your agent, don’t ask any questions for which the response is obvious. For example, if you are a 20-year-old female, don’t ask the agent if they are well-versed in working with your demographic. The answer is likely ‘yes,’ and that’s precisely why they’re interested in you. Even if it’s ‘no,’ would that really change anything? Agents don’t have to represent every demographic to have knowledge about what they need to do to work with you.

Here is the third way to avoid problems with our agent.
After you’re interview, if you need a contract, trust the agent has your best interest in mind. You don’t have to call every day. You definitely don’t have to swing by the office repeatedly. The communicative terms should already be evident in you contract and you should expect to follow these. Being overly intrusive is a turn off and is sure to cause undo problems.

Here is the fourth way to avoid problems with our agent.
If you need to have a follow up meeting with your agent, and you will likely have to periodically check-in, make sure you’re valuing the agent’s time. Most meetings last roughly thirty minutes. Always come to these meetings prepared to ask specific questions you’ve written out in advance. This will help to ensure you stay on the right track and feel comfortable with the information received when you leave. The agent’s time is valuable. Your time is valuable. Always remember this to avoid problems.

Also, again, don’t call daily. This is a big no-no. Think about it – would you want someone who you know only professionally to call to chat every day? Trust that the agent has your best interest in mind and is working on getting you booked in role. Yes, it can be frustrating if you haven’t heard from them for a minute. But it will only cause problems if you start appearing overly eager and the agent has to repeat themselves time and again that they are working on it.

Landing a contract with an agent is an awesome step. Once you’re able to sign on the bottom line, you’ll want to treat this person with the same respect you’d expect to receive. This is a professional, working relationship – not a personal one. To avoid any problems, it’s important that you treat it as such. There should be mutual respect for each other’s time and talents. This will allow the relationship to work long-term!

3 Myths About Transitioning from TV to Film

4m · Published 16 Sep 19:00

Here is the first myth about transitioning from TV to film.

Perhaps the biggest myth about the transition from TV to film is that the process is simple and straightforward. While there are many A-listers who are versatile enough in their craft to take on both (and maybe even appear on stage or in commercials, too), it’s relatively uncommon to do so.

Along the same lines, television actors who communicate well behind the scenes communicate better on camera. If tensions exist, this could translate into on camera interactions. In a film setting, actors may never have to communicate again, but contracts for television shows can renew for new seasons for many years to come. An audience is often counting on the return of all of their favorite characters. So, when tensions exist off screen, this can make keeping the cast together and working well with each other more difficult.

Here is the second myth about transitioning from TV to film.
Another myth about making the transition is that there is little change to the dialogue piece. The length of dialogue per scene is much shorter in television than in film and the rhythm is quicker. If looking to evolve from being a TV star to film work, it will be essential for the actor to slow their speech a bit and be able to consume more lines of dialogue. Obviously, the converse is true if heading in the other direction. The amount of dialogue in a single film may be somewhat overwhelming at first, so amending any strategy for memorization will be important.

Character development-wise, those who are in television are able to spend more time on bringing out the qualities of their role. Schedules are more flexible, too, which allows the space for connecting with the character and continuing to work on displaying these qualities. In film, schedules are much faster paced and there is less free time to do this. It is important for actors to be able to understand their role up front and bring it out in the best way they can with limited development time.

Here is the third myth about transitioning from TV to film.
Another common myth about making the transition is that the range of emotion for television and film are about the same. There is typically a need for a wider range for film actors than those in television. Also, what may not be able to fit into a single show can more easily be included in film, so being able to adjust expectations is essential. There may be a need for adapting to more uncomfortable situations, such as deeply intimate scenes.

Transitioning from television to film is more difficult than it may seem on the surface. It takes a high level of versatility and dedication to the craft. It can be frustrating at first if an actor isn’t aware of, or prepared for, the differences between the two platforms. Accounting for these differences in advance can help manages expectations and make the transition a bit easier.

5 Key Elements of Every Successful Audition

4m · Published 10 Sep 14:00

If you have an audition coming up – congratulations! This should be a moment of celebration. However, there is likely so much running through your mind preparing to give a successful audition that it can make it difficult to see it as such. What monologue should you use? How should you dress? What can you do to stand out from the competition (in a good way)? These are all common questions. Here are some tips to make your next audition memorable.

Here is the first tip for having a successful audition.
One of the first things you can do to ease some of your anxiety is to study up on how famous actors made it big. Knowing what steps they took to have a successful audition time and again to get them where they are today can help you follow suit. What monologues were used? What proved to be so on point with their performances that they nailed it? Reading about what these actors felt they did to get to where they are today can help you better understand the craft.

Here is the second tip for having a successful audition.
Along the same lines, you can scour the web for info about what didn’t work for these A-listers. You’ll likely find a few interviews in which your favorite starts spill about their audition blunders. When you know what a successful audition doesn’t look like, you can avoid making the same mistakes.

Here is the third tip for having a successful audition.
You know the saying – practice makes perfect. Auditions are a great place to work on your skillset, and the more you attend, the more experience you’ll gain. Even if you don’t feel 100% prepared the first time, you’re likely to have a successful audition after getting to know the ropes. Be patient with yourself and remind yourself that you are human, and humans make mistakes. Even if you do, it may not mean the CD will automatically dismiss your performance. If you’re a good fit for the role, trust that you will get a callback.

Here is the fourth tip for having a successful audition.
Other ways in which you can ensure you’ll have a successful audition are attending workshops, classes, and improv sessions. These forums will guide you in vivo through exercises that’ll help your performance when it truly matters. You can make mistakes and learn from these before going in front of the CD.

Here is the fifth tip for having a successful audition.
Of course, to have a successful audition you’ll have to stay motivated. This means even when you get a ‘no’ or many ‘no’s.’ Being rejected is just par for the course when it comes to building your resume. It’s important to persevere despite rejection. It only takes one awesome audition to add a line to your resume. Take a deep breath, walk into the room as if you’ve never heard ‘no’ before and make sure you’re giving each audition your all.

Preparing to have a successful audition can be stressful. Be kind to yourself and give yourself plenty of prep time before you head into the audition room. If you hear ‘no,’ thank the CD and move on. The more auditions you attend, the more likely you are to land the role of your dreams. Practice and perseverance really do pay off!

3 Ways to Cover Any Tattoo

4m · Published 07 Sep 15:00

Opps! That casting you would be a really good fit for doesn’t allow any body ink and you have a very visible tattoo. What to do? Try covering it up, of course! It’s very possible no one will ever notice if you select the right products and apply them just so. However, proper preparation is key, and it may take more than one trail run to pull it off.

Here is the first way to cover any tattoo.
First, make sure you can actually coverup the tattoo and it’s not going to be too hard to do. Whether or not this is possible has a lot to do with the size, color, and location. While it may be easy to apply the right amount of makeup to your ankle to mask the ink, it may not be so easy to do away with an entire arm sleeve. You’ll have to use your best judgement and proceed accordingly.

Here is the second way to cover any tattoo.
If the tattoo size is small enough to conceal with makeup, do a trial run.
Pick up some long-lasting cover in your skin tone and apply before you head to your appointment. Sometimes you’ll need a blend of two or more tones to make it look just right. Adding powder atop the cream will help seal it in. If you don’t select just the right products, however, they can rub off or your skin may look bruised, which will only draw more attention to the area. You’ll want to practice applying any products before the big day to make sure you get the routine down pat.

Clean the tattoo with a gentle body wash and pat dry. Then, add a makeup primer to help ensure the tint is securely locked into place. As strange as it may seem, you’ll want to apply an orange tint first to neutralize the color. Then, trace the outer edges of the tat with a concealer and let it dry.

Here is the third way to cover any tattoo.
After you’ve prepped the area and neutralized the tone, choose a foundation that closely matches your skin. Again, you may have to blend together more than one for the best results. Apply in the center and pat to the outer edge, ensuring an even result. Then, let the area dry. Pat a powder on top to seal in the foundation. You can also pick up a makeup finishing spray that is designed to keep colors in place. This will pull double duty in sealing in the look.

If done properly, you may still be able to apply for the gig you’ve been eyeballing and pull it off should you get booked. Test out the results of this routine in advance to see if you can spot the coverup attempt and determine how long it will stick before the makeup begins to wear off. Take some time on the big day to follow the same process so your tattoo is properly covered and worry more about your performance than your appearance!

3 Habits of A-list Actors

4m · Published 02 Sep 17:00

Getting started in acting requires dedication, determination, and effective time management skills. If you want to get ahead, it’s best to have some tangible ways to get there in your back pocket. Knowing what works and what doesn’t will help you get busy moving your career forward without wasting too much energy or resources. Here are three habits of the most successful actors.

Here is the first effective habit of A-list actors.
The most important advice is to stay organized. This may seem like common sense, but all too often, when you’re rushing from point A to point B and don’t have much downtime in between, it becomes all to easy to let things get lost in translation. Maintaining to-do lists and routines are habits that’ll maximize productivity and help you stay on track. Whether you decide that you want to keep a running list online or prefer a pen and paper version, having something to refer back to takes the guesswork out of what you’ve done and still need to do.

Here is the second effective habit of A-list actors.
Keeping a routine also means staying active in one form or another every day. Even if you have a million reasons for taking a day off, check in to ensure your emails are all read, and you haven’t missed any calls. It’s important to take a day or two for yourself to avoid against burned out but if one of your habits is to take a few minutes at least check in, you won’t miss anything important, and this help you feel more centered when you get back to it.

Here is the third effective habit of A-list actors.
Another one of the most effective habits of successful actors includes breaking down bigger picture goals into day-to-to tasks. You may have heard of a vision board that is often put together as a visual representation of goals and motivation to continue pushing to achieve them. In creating a habits list or vision board, ask yourself what goals you want to achieve in the next year. What will the next six months look like? Five years? What do you need to do at a microlevel to reach these more macro end-goals?

In designing your daily habits list, maybe you want to make sure you take care of your skin in the morning and night, fit in a HIIT workout routine or scour castings online for at least an hour. When will these tasks happen every day? Maybe you get in your skincare routine in and a quick workout in the morning and spend the hour online at night after you go to your 9-5 each day. It may take some trial and error before you figure out what works best, so keep your list adaptable.

Becoming a successful actor takes work. You can be the most efficient if you initiate daily habits that eventually become second nature and help you realize your dreams. The less brain capacity that’s needed to organize your day, the more energy you’ll have to practice your craft and preparing for auditions.
