3 Rebranding Tips for Going from a Child to an Adult Actor

4m · Published 30 Aug 17:00

Whether you are a child actor in a television series, a well-known feature film or in a hit commercial, you already have some experience in front of the camera, which is great. However, transitioning from a lovable child to an adult actor who’s taken seriously is no small feat. Here are a few tips for rebranding successfully.

Here is the first rebranding tip.
If you want to create a whole new path for yourself in rebranding as an adult, the goal is to steer clear from the image you were known for once upon a time. If you were booked for the role of a small girl who becomes a princess in a magical land, let’s say, and are determined to land roles in action films, you’ll want to come up with a game plan that makes this image more believable than your who you were the last time you met with a casting director. This is plausible by choosing a fitting monologue and dressing appropriately at auditions. It should also be easily ascertainable in your marketing materials that you bring with you. Even if you’re showing range on your reel, when determining which clips to include, start with the end goal genre and build from there. You may have an action piece, followed by dramatic dialogue, and closing with a comedic performance. This shows range without simply reinventing the child actor that once was.

Here is the second rebranding tip.
If that infamous child role gets brought up at any point along the way, don’t completely shut it out. Start to see this as a positive thing – your performance was memorable, and whoever brought it up is probably doing so because of this. Thank whoever has brought it to your attention and clue them in on your rebranding attempts and the direction your hoping to head. This will create some distant between who you were then and who you are now. It will also give you an opportunity to express yourself in the here-and-now and make clear that you are not interested (in a nice way) of pursuing roles that are reminiscent of how you first got started. Word spreads quickly in entertainment, so you’ll not only want to keep your composure but pitch to someone new whenever you get a chance.

Here is the third rebranding tip.
The best way to come up with a rebranding strategy that sticks is to work with someone who does this all the time. You’ll likely want to consider signing with an agent or manager to promote who you are now and keep this image intact. By having an expert manage the public relations piece, this will free you up to focus more on developing the adult persona you’re hoping to achieve. Rebranding is something that can take a lot of time and practice, and it’s important for you to be able to find space for honing your craft.

Many A-list actors have undergone rebranding over the years. If you’re trying to decide whether this is something you can take on, do some research and see what worked for them. There’s nothing wrong with taking a few notes and trying it out, too!

5 Simple Ways to Get Your Stand-up Career Off the Ground

4m · Published 26 Aug 17:00

It can be tough to get your comedy career off the ground, but it’s all about staying motivated and advocating for yourself, while finding a niche for your jokes. You’ll want to follow these five easy tips to ensure your standing out as a stand-up comedian.

Here is the first tip for getting your stand-up career off the ground.
Define your brand and make sure this is consistent across any and all platforms on which you plan to promote your skills. In order to come up with a brand that fits, figure out who your target audience is. These are people who you feel are going to get your humor and want to hear more. Start with understanding yourself and what you think is funny. These specifics will play into some sellable stand-up material. It’s not to say that you can’t expand your reach, eventually. It’s just a good place to start.

Here is the second tip for getting your stand-up career off the ground.
Make yourself visible in cyberspace by establishing social media accounts and a webpage that acts as a central hub for a bit of background information, your stand-up resume and headshots, upcoming gigs, and whatever else you’d like to share.

Once you’ve established accounts, come up with a captivating first impression. How you initially position yourself online will set the stage for who you are from a branding perspective and how you’ll market yourself moving forward. Again, the goal is to be consistent across all platforms while always keeping your target audience in mind.

Here is the third tip for getting your stand-up career off the ground.
Being online is an ongoing commitment, and you have to be willing to continually update all content. There are many comedians who have been successful simply from publishing videos on their social media. You can reach millions of viewers by posting online. Consider whether you want to get into the game and, if so, keep giving your viewers what they want.

Here is the fourth tip for getting your stand-up career off the ground.
Even if you decide to focus more on in-person stand-up, you’ll want to maintain some kind of interactive presence online. Not everyone can make it to a show, and you might be surprised by the worldwide attention you get. Being interactive with fans makes them feel noticed and appreciated. You may want to create online polls or pose a question in a status update. The tricky part is, whatever you decide to do, you’ll also want to make time to post replies to anyone who participates.

Here is the fifth tip for getting your stand-up career off the ground.
As your getting your stand-up career started, you’ll also want to start looking into local venues at which you may be able to book shows. Get an idea of where nearby comedy clubs and other entertainment hotspots are so you can start making calls when you’re ready. Then, pick up the phone and begin to network with the owners or those responsible for bookings.

Launching your stand-up career online will give you great reach. This will help you build a solid fan base and ensure your shows are sold out. If the first few things you post aren’t gaining traction, you can always restart in cyberspace without an awkward silence in front of the mic. Once you get the hang of things, take what works and run with it!

Audition Risks: A Go or a No? Here’s 3 Risk Worth Trying

4m · Published 19 Aug 20:00

To take a risk or not take a risk – that is the question. When you’re at an audition, there’s a fine line between being memorable and standing out for all the wrong reasons. So, what’s considered acceptable and what’s not when it comes to risks, and how do you know the difference between the two? Here are five out of the box ways you may want to consider showcasing your skills that are a bit riskier, but not so much so that you’ll make a total fool of yourself.

Here is the first risk that will pay off.

Being authentic and coming across as if you’ve completely forgotten that you were acting at all is a risk that’s bound to get noticed – in a good way. Try letting your guard down and communicating authentically or reciting the lines in a way in which your true self shines though. Most actors who show up to auditions get so caught up in how they’re going to present, they forget about how they’re coming across, and they become too afraid to take risks. Hyper-focusing on technique and ‘overacting’ will project a level of phoniness that is simply unflattering. It takes a lot of confidence to let your true self come out in the audition room and this will be memorable.

Here is the second risk that will pay off.

Go against the grain – to a point. How many times has life thrown a curveball and you’ve had to make a split-second decision to do something that you normally, if you had time to think and plan it out, might not have done? Life presents choices all the time that are unexpected and which force us to take risks. Oftentimes, decisions aren’t based on weeks of preparation and don’t go exactly as planned. Think of the audition room as just another spot in which you ended up and have a decision to make. You can either make your time there memorable or you can recite your lines like a broken record and blend in with the crowd. The choice is yours.

Here is the third risk that will pay off.

Another way you can be sure to stand out is to choose a character that sings and/or dances. Yes, this may be a risk that’s a bit uncomfortable and adds a level of complexity to your audition, but it’s not an everyday choice, which is really what you’ll want to go for if you want to be one of the few who get a callback. Don’t have the moves? Consider taking classes ahead of time. Can’t carry a note? Maybe it’s time to squeeze in some vocal lessons. Entertainment really is all about entertaining so and the more ways you can do this, the better. These risks show range, and range is what gets noticed.

Not every audition risk is going to pay off and you’ll want to contemplate the risk versus reward potential before it’s your time to show off what you’ve got. But a little extra confidence and pizzazz can go a long way. And sometimes it’s about trial and error when it comes to risks. You’ll have to bat a few strikes before you hit a homerun.

3 Differences Between TikTok POV and Main Screen Acting

4m · Published 16 Aug 15:00

TikTok has become an ever-popular forum for aspiring actors to post intense monologues and play short parts in a particularly dramatic fashion. Many users are now creatively using TikTok POV clips with music and sound effects to tell a 15-second dramatized story. The content ranges from horror to historical to teenage romance, wacky and everything in between. More than one video is commonly posted and multiple POVs are showcased in order to create a memorable storyline with multiple characters.

While there are some similarities between TikTok POV clips and main screen acting, such as content creation for an audience that is dramatized, fictional, and meant to gain attention and garner a reaction, understanding the differences between acting for the social media app and for the main screen is important for actors who are wondering which way to head to get their big break.

The first difference between TikTok POVs and main screen acting.
Perhaps the most noticeable difference between the two is the camera angle. The TikTok POV is meant to be viewed a phone screen and, therefore, there is usually little actual movement or action taking place. Most of the acting relies on facial expressions and must draw the viewer in with dramatization rather than with the use of scene props or other background action.

The second difference between TikTok POVs and main screen acting.
A TikTok POV is like a close-up in a mainstream film, which typically lasts just a few seconds in a feature, full-length production. It’s similar to a small clip in which it’s important to dial in on a person’s emotional reaction before panning back out. The entire film is essentially this small piece, and thus, the content is condensed in a way that it must quickly tell a story.

The third difference between TikTok POVs and main screen acting.
Another difference between the two is that the POV-er is usually speaking directly into the camera. In mainstream films, this is not the case. The actors pretends that the camera is not there at all and speaks to other actors in the scene as if the situation is happening in real life. At the same time, if there is a response from the TikTok POV point person, it normally comes from behind the camera rather than out front where the individual is visible to the audience. This means, viewers use their imagination to call up an image of what the behind-the-scenes person actually looks like.

While there is, no doubt, some notable acting skills happening in TikTok POV clips, the character development that is required for mainstream films is more intricate, especially for those who’ve taken on featured roles. In short, while TikTok can relief a few seconds of boredom, main screen acting is produced in a way to maintain an audience’s attention for a longer period of time. Both can be entertaining in their own way, and since TikTok has become super popular, it can be a great way for actors to practice showcasing their craft regardless of the direction they’re hoping to head.

How to Avoid Overacting: 4 Tips for Success

4m · Published 12 Aug 21:00

You’ve landed the role of a lifetime, memorized all of your lines, and you’re super excited to get started. This excitement is, of course, a good thing. But it can also easily translate into overacting. All of that practicing in front of a mirror can look very different in front of a camera, which tends to amplify every gesture you make. Here are four tips to avoid being too over-the-top while still giving it your all.

Here is the first tip to avoid overacting.

In order to avoid overacting, you’ll want to try to execute each line and mannerism the same as you would in real life. If you’ve just received some exciting news, smile and say so. Don’t jump up and down and spin in circles. If you’ve received terrible news, reply in the same way you would if you received this information from a friend or loved one. In other words, you’ll want to respond to whatever you hear the same as you would off-camera.

Here is the second tip to avoid overacting.

Acting naturally involves reacting almost a hundred percent of the time, and not trying to out-do the other person. In reciting your lines, whether starting a conversation and going from there, or responding to someone else’s words, you should feel as if you’re not acting at all. Dramatic pauses, stereotypical gestures, and amplifying your voice in a way that you normally would not only makes you look awkward. To avoid overacting, imagine that you are having a conversation with someone you know and simply go from there.

Here is the third tip to avoid overacting.

Be prepared when heading into a scene, but don’t expect to be perfect. Even if you’ve memorized the dialogue, unless specifically written into the script, the rest is ad lib. Don’t ask for a restart because you’re so caught up in the body language that you’re “supposed” to use that you overthink what you actually did. Don’t get so self-conscious about the placement of your arms, hands, etc., that you lose tack of what is happening. Overthinking usually means overacting.

Here is the fourth tip to avoid overacting.

Don’t let your mind wander into a space where you’re overanalyzing every little thing. All too often, when performing (regardless of the task at hand), it’s easy for your thoughts to make it difficult to be present. Yet, only by staying present can you react to something as if you’re hearing it for the first time. You can’t be genuine if you’re drifting off to a time in which you were practicing and struggled with this scene or the thousand times you reviewed it off-camera. Overacting often stems from fear of failure.

Remember, in reality, most of the information you ingest forces you to respond on the spot. You are not a mind reader and are not going into conversations prepared for next steps. You’re already a great actor because you engage with others on a daily basis and are a natural when it comes to reading their emotions and responding. Think about this when the camera is rolling, and overacting will be a non-issue.

4 Tips for Mastering the Nonverbal Side of Acting

4m · Published 05 Aug 17:00

More than half of an actor’s job is actively listening to others who are speaking on set. This means remembering to act even when you’re not reciting dialogue, this is the nonverbal side of acting. Many different camera angles are used in filming a production, and audiences will continue to focus on anything in the frame. So, it’s important for actors to master this skill. Here’s four tips for doing just that.

Here’s the first tip for mastering the nonverbal side of acting

Much of actor development is focused on memorizing and reciting lines of dialogue in the script. However, actors are also expected to anticipate in the nonverbal side of being on set. First and foremost, this means paying attention to the script’s content that does not involve speaking lines. There will be notes about the scene and camera angles that should also be committed to memory. These notes give clues to the actor about when he or she is doing in the scene – they ‘set the stage,’ so to speak. So, whether reciting lines or listening, these cues are an essential part of the production and shouldn’t be simply disregarded.

Here’s the second tip for mastering the nonverbal side of acting

Remaining present even when you’re not speaking shows passion and motivation to ensure each scene is successful. Actors should ‘stay alive’ in their reactions to what someone else is saying. If, for example, the dialogue is somber, the accompanying actor should use facial experiences and body language to demonstrate distress and offer comfort. If the dialogue expresses excitement, share in this enthusiasm. Again, head-nodding, leaning in, smiling, and other nonverbal communication is just as important to nail the purpose of the scene and help the audience understand the message being conveyed.

Here’s the third tip for mastering the nonverbal side of acting

Accurate reflection of what’s being said though nonverbal communication is especially vital. If the speaking actor is discussing something that is secretive and difficult to share, consider how you might react to this in real life. You probably wouldn’t be smiling and laughing but, instead, projecting genuine concern and appreciation for this intimacy. Accurate emotional expression will enable the audience to ‘feel’ the scene – it will allow viewers to feel immersed in the same secret, and eager to watch what happens next.

Here’s the fourth tip for mastering the non-speaking side of acting

The camera will capture active listening as often as it will capture speech. If you practice your nonverbal skills according to this assumption, you’ll be more likely to remain actively engaged in the moment and liken the dialogue to real-life conversations and interactions. However, it is also important not to pay too much attention to being filmed. If an actor is far too focused on whether the camera is capturing their reactions, it will be difficult to come across as genuine. Assuming so ahead of time will relieve the stress of having to check to see if you’re on camera.

Mastering these nonverbal skills takes practice. However, treating every scene as if it’s actually happening will help you to feel engaged and able to react to dialogue in a way that keeps audiences doing the same. When you connect both with fellow actors and the audience even when not speaking, this shows immense talent that will continue to get you booked!

3 Tips for Building Your Social Media Brand

4m · Published 02 Aug 16:00

It’s more important now than ever before to building your social media brand if you want to make it big. In fact, many influencers garner fame overnight by employing just the right strategy to position themselves for success. But you’ll need to know how to handle your social the right way. It’s easy to get everything set up and have it be a total flop. Here are three tips for getting started.

Here’s the first tip for building your social media brand

If you already have an online presence, it’s time to update, especially if you have a Facebook account or a Twitter just for fun. There’s a big difference between using these to coordinate birthday parties and chat with friends and building an entertainment brand that’s sure to get noticed by the masses. Decide which social media accounts you already have up and running that you are going to focus on and delete any old accounts that’ll no longer serve you. Then, make sure all of your information is complete and up to date, so your accounts are searchable. Cleaning up content means deleting anything that could adversely impact your mission, too, such as old college pics or last night’s status update.

Here’s the second tip for building your social media brand

Once you’ve cleaned up old content and made room for the new, decide what you want the focus of your social media brand to be. Are you a rockstar singer? Do you get booked in Indie films more than anyone you know? Are you hoping to be the next supermodel? Whatever the direction you’re headed, you’ll want to build your brand around this. And your profiles should reflect where you’re at. They should also be streamlined in a way that your future goals aren’t confusing. You’ll want to maintain consistency across platforms, meaning your overall brand should be the same on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Here’s the third tip for building your social media brand

Once you have new, relevant content uploaded and feel like you’re representing yourself in a way that will allow you to project your social media brand to your intended audience, it’s time to consider how to make updating from here on out as easy as possible. Anyone following your profiles will want to see you’re actually active on them, and this can be difficult to do. Maintaining an online presence can be time-consuming amid all of life’s other responsibilities. The best way to make sure you’re giving fans what they’re looking for it to use social media apps that do the updating for you. Yes, that’s really a ‘thing,’ and it will save you a ton of time. Consider familiarizing yourself with Buffer, Hootsuite, Sprout, or any other handy tool that will allow you to cross-post and schedule in advance.

There’s a reason that celebrities are so active on their social – it’s a super easy way to get noticed by a large number of people. This makes having a solid social media brand essential. Follow these easy steps and you’ll be able to quickly transition from a hodge-podge presence to streamlined success overnight!

3 Tips for Hiding Undereye Circles

4m · Published 27 Jul 20:00

It’s no secret – everyone has them. And nobody wants them. Undereye circles are an annoying part of being human. You probably feel like you’re constantly trying to conceal the evitable that pops up every morning whether or not you’ve gotten enough shuteye. If you’re not quite sure your efforts are paying off, you’re definitely not alone. There are certain tips to follow for a look that screams, “I’m awake!” Here are three must-dos to maximize results.

Here’s the first tip for hiding undereye circles.

Dark undereye circles
tend to be worse in the morning, and it just so happens this also tends to be the time that you pay the most attention to your face. What’s the quickest way to get rid of them before you head out the door? The right concealer will do the trick.

Of course, you’ll want to pick up a color that easily blends into your natural skin tone or into the foundation you choose to put on first. This is super important. If you choose a color that is too light in an attempt to cover the dark, this will draw more unwanted attention to the area. In photos, the lightened area will be even more accentuated, and if it doesn’t match the rest of your palette, it won’t look right.

Pick a concealer specifically designed for covering dark circles, apply, and snap a few selfies to see if it blends the way you want it to. You can also book a consultation with a professional so make sure you’re choosing the right products.

Here’s the second tip for hiding undereye circles.

If you have a few extra minutes in the morning, you can wash your face using a cleanser for sensitive skin (which is best for under the eyes) and cold water. You can also opt to soak a washcloth in cold water and place it over your face for a few minutes. The cold temperature decreases blood flow, which reduces puffiness and minimizes the appearance of undereye circles. Follow with your makeup routine after the color subsides.

Here’s the third tip for hiding undereye circles.

Apply a soothing moisturizer or eye cream to the area will decrease irritation and improve skin tone. This will not only feel good but will allow you to apply your concealer more evenly. If you have a few extra minutes, grab a freezer face mask, a couple of ice cubes wrapped in a dampened cloth, or cooled cucumbers. Leave the option you choose on for five to ten minutes to properly prep the area. Then, apply some lotion and give it time to seep into the skin’s pores before applying any makeup.

Undereye circles are drag, especially when you’re going somewhere and have to look your best. Getting into a routine, both morning and night, of taking care of your skin is a great way to ensure you can minimize these once and for all. A little extra effort can go a long way and help you look your like a million bucks in-person and in all of your photos!

Self-Tapes for an Audition: Here’s 4 Tips for Practicing

4m · Published 22 Jul 19:00

Many times, casting directors will ask for a self-tapes for an audition from actors when posting available roles. A prerecorded audition allows the CD to quickly go through potential candidates and watch and rewatch submissions as needed. Self-tapes are becoming more and more popular as technology has become an integral piece of the audition process and practicing before finalizing a self-taped audition is key to getting follow-up call.

Here’s the first tip for creating a self-taped audition

First and foremost, it’s important to find adequate time to do some practicing before you turn on the camera. One of the best ways to do so is to perform your lines in front of a mirror. This allows you to see what the CD will see without the added pressure of creating footage. Recite your monologue in front of the mirror as many times as you’d like before taking the process to the next level, tweaking anything that needs to be along the way.

Here’s the second tip for creating a self-taped audition

You might also want to have a friend watch you while you’re practicing. This should be someone that is going to give you genuine, unfiltered feedback that will help you to improve along the way. At the same time, you’ll want to select someone who doesn’t make you feel too anxious, which could compromise your performance. You can ask a trusted your friend or family member to tape you on their phone after a few tries, so you can get some guided feedback while reviewing the recording.

Here’s the third tip for creating a self-taped audition

When you’re ready, get the camera set up and recite your lines while it’s rolling. Then, play back the footage taken while practicing as often as you’d like and see what you think. You can record your self-taped audition as many times as is necessary to feel like you’ve really nailed it. Allowing others to also view the tape once you feel it’s ready to submit can allow you to get additional, last minute insight into your strengths and opportunities for improvement.

Here’s the fourth tip for creating a self-taped audition

When you play back your self-taped audition tape and/or are receiving feedback from others, make sure you jot down some notes regarding areas that may require additional focus. This will help you hone your skills with continued practicing so you can offer the best submission possible. Remember, the notes are only for you and are meant to help you grow through the process. They’re not meant to be an unhealthy critique of your acting abilities.

Reviewing your self-tape before submitting a final version to the casting director is a vital piece of the audition process. Even if you’re scheduled for an in-person audition, you can be practicing these steps ahead of time to better prepare for the actual event. Watching yourself perform give you a solid understanding of where you should focus your energy on improving your craft, so that once you’re in front of the project’s decision-maker, you’ll have a great shot at getting booked.
