Why, if you want to speak with confidence, you Need To Workout Your Speaking Muscles. #40

30m · Published 03 Feb 20:42

In March of last year I started an in person speaker club, the Speak Like a Speaker Club. I wanted to create a supportive space where the introverted and unsure could exercise their speaking muscles and put in the speaking reps!

A gym for the mouth and mind, so to speak.

After all, you speak wherever you speak – networking, boardroom, water cooler or dinner table.

As well as getting speaking practise and feedback, club members play 'get out of your comfort zone' exercises (scary for most!) which give the brain a thorough workout and aid concentration, coordination, and focus.

For this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking I invited along Copywriter, Westrow Cooper, Marketing Consultant, Mark Masters and Creative Business Coach, Christophe Stourton, all SLAS Club members to talk to you about their experience of stepping outside their comfort zones, the process of practice and feedback, and how it's helped their speaking confidence and their business.

Thankfully they have all felt the benefit of practice, feedback, and support. Our conversation highlights the need to push yourself to the edge of your comfort zone, to lean into the fear and to challenge yourself.

How do you get on the TEDx stage and do you need to be a confident speaker? #39

47m · Published 03 Feb 19:11

Is a TEDx talk on your ‘to do’ list for 2024?

If so, listen to this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking. It's a TEDx Special!

My guests have all stood on that red circle. They’ve walked the walk and most definitely talked the talk!

Alongside me will be TEDx event organiser, speaker and coach, Catherine Sandland, communication and Unsquashing expert, Trisha Lewis and Multi-Story man, speaker and TEDx emcee, Andrew Thorp.

If you’re interested in speaking, coaching speakers, organising an event, or hosting one, this episode will answer SO many questions for you.

How do I find an event?

How do I apply to be a TEDx speaker?

Do I need to be a confident speaker?

How long should a TEDx talk be?

A TEDx has been on my bucket list for years but only in the last couple have I even contemplated actually going for it. So, this is a dream panel for me and it was a fabulous conversation.

Speak With Confidence to Sell With Confidence. #38

34m · Published 04 Jan 13:20

My guest for this previously LIVE episode of Speaking About Speaking was International Sales Coach, Author of Amazon best seller, Live It, Love It, Sell It, and keynote speaker the fabulous Jules White.

I first interviewed Jules for my Creative Conversations podcast in Feb 2021 when we spoke about her passion for sales, growing up in a sweet shop and life after securing investment on Dragons Den (the reason she is known as the ‘real dragon slayer!)’

Published in October 2018, Jules book 'Live It, Love It, Sell It' draws on both her passion for selling and her love of human conversation, as well as her experience in corporate sales and as an entrepreneur.

The ‘Live it Love it Sell it’ methodology helps passionate entrepreneurs and businesses get clarity on their ‘why’ and learn how to sell in an authentic human way.

As an International Inspirational Sales Speaker she talks about ‘Putting HUMANITY back into sales’ and her TEDx talk, to 1600 people at Europe’s biggest TEDx in Brighton, focused on ‘there being no such word as can’t’. Jules’ ultimate aim is to make sure everyone falls in love with sales, because life skills are sales skills!

We discuss how speaking on the TEDx stage with little notice or rehearsal benefitted her business and how our fear of rejection makes the selling process feel Icky? We also, talk about how when you you speak with confidence you can sell with confidence!

How do you go from nowhere to being on the same stage as Richard Branson? The key to success is saying YES! #36

32m · Published 02 Jan 14:09

My guest previously LIVE episode is the founder and CEO of Balbert marketing and the founder, host and producer of the Real Business Connections podcast, Ben Albert.

He is a collaborator, connector and visionary and he's due to speak on stage alongside Richard Branson in Las Vegas, very soon!

When Covid hit in March 2020 Ben was a sales executive bobbing along quite nicely in his hometown of Rochester, New York. Within a month he was unemployed and in his own words ‘lost’. He was in a dark place.

Did he say did he stay there and wallow in self-pity? Hell, no!

• He launched a network of podcasts including Real Business Connections (on a mission to actually move the needle on 1 million lives, one conversation at a time!) A Podcast that recently had over 12000 downloads in just 24-hours!

• He's spoken on countless podcasts.

• Founded the GrowGetters Network and networked with new friends that he hopes to support for the rest of his life.

• Worked professionally with multiple businesses, built multiple B2B partnerships and helped numerous brands.

Ben says... ‘There is no key to success. It's a combination lock. And each and every one of us has our own unique combination.’

Ben is an inspiration on so many levels. He has helped, supported and connected me to some of his incredible network since we met just over a year ago.

We talk about his inspiring journey, finding the balance between doing what lights you up and revenue driving activities and the power of saying YES.

Speaker As Preacher: Get Your audiences attention and keep it! SAS with guest Jon Burkhart #32

36m · Published 08 Nov 14:36

In this previously live episode, I speak with international award-winning keynote speaker, strategist and author of the world-famous Newsjacking, Jon Burkhart.

I know Jon as part of the You Are The Media community. He was the first person I ever interviewed in person for my podcast.

A firecracker when it comes to speaking, his energy onstage and off is frenetic and infectious.

As a professional speaker, he talks about the WHAT, HOW & WHY of what makes a brand more memorable and meaningful.

Jon describes himself as a 'firecracker' and he's not exaggerating!

He is dynamic, different (he started our conversation wearing a Panda's head!) and an advocate of 'dopamine storytelling'.

He explains what that is in our fascinating and all-too-short conversation. He tells me how he trained to be a speaker before he became a marketing strategist and we discuss amongst other things whether speakers are extroverts or introverts, and what makes him nervous on stage.

Plus, what he mean by Newsjacking and Fartstorming!

His answer to what makes a good speaker good and a bad speaker suck is quotable. So here it is...

'Good speakers always have the end in mind. Bad speakers always have themselves in mind.'

So true.

It's always great fun talking to Jon and I promise it'll be as much fun to listen.

The Risk You Take By Showing Up on Social Media. SAS with Jackie and Ella Orr #31

31m · Published 02 Nov 09:28

In this previously live episode, social media and LinkedIn expert, Ella Orr and I discuss how you use your voice on social media.

We talk about the platform you use, the content you create and the risk to your Personal Brand and status when you show up in front of an audience.

So... Do you Speak up or shut up?

❓ Do you consider the risks to your personal brand when you put yourself in front of an audience?

❓ Are you concerned that speaking up or standing up for your values will lower your status in the eyes of your tribe and alienate potential clients?

❓ Do YOU conform to fit in so as not to make waves? Ella argues that building a personal brand requires you to take a risk.

❓ Is that something that worries you and means you stay in your box and in your comfort zone?

A fascinating topic and an interesting, and lively conversation. We'd love to hear your thoughts.
