How to choose the RIGHT Speakers, aligned with the values and theme of the event. #30

Welcome to Part 2 of my conversation with Mark masters.

There was some weird mix-up with Streamyard and/or Linkedin messing up the timing of the live stream, which goes out at 4 p.m. on a Tuesday. For some reason (maybe the algorithm got confused over BST, British Summer Time or that fact I was streaming from SWINDON!? šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø) it scheduled it for 5 PM.

SO, my fabulous guest Mark Masters agreed not only to spend 4 - 4.30 live with me but again 5 - 5.30 p.m. just so we didnā€™t upset anyone whoā€™d put the time aside.

Mark says heā€™s a marketer on a mission to empower people to create businesses that others naturally want to be with. And I know that to be absolutely true.

Mark is the founder of You Are The Media, a collaborative, creative community of fabulous people (including me!) where he shares his values of creativity, independence, visibility, experimentation, co-learning, community and self-sufficiency and where WE have become the media. Self-sufficient marketers!

Mark is first and foremost a marketing consultant but heā€™s also a speaker, author, community leader, event organiser, educator, and Thursday morning newsletter paperboy. Plus, (briefly) a stand-up comedian!

Iā€™ll stop there - I could go on all day listing the fabulous things that Mark Masters is, suffice to say I wouldnā€™t be doing what Iā€™m doing now if it wasnā€™t for him and the YATM community.

A huge thanks to Mark for showing up twice, even though in between he was in charge of feeding the kids! In this part, we chat homophily, the speaker as a celebrity or friend and how not being picked as an 11-year-old led to You Are The Media.

How To Get Paid To Speak, Boost Your Personal Brand and Become KNOWN, with Mark Schaefer

42m · Published 27 Sep 11:57

My guest for this previously live episode of Speaking About Speaking was the marketing legend, Mark Schaefer.

I first became aware of Mark through the marketing-based community You Are The Media when during lockdown and with Covid he spoke at one of their Zoom events. He likes to say he was a Covid early adopter.

I feel incredibly fortunate that he agreed to come on my little olā€™ podcast as not only is he a globally recognised speaker of 20 years, (his speeches have inspired audiences in 40 countries) but heā€™s also the best-selling author of 10 books. Including Belonging to the Brand, a book on the role of community in modern marketing in which he dedicates a chapter to Mark Masters, founder of You Are The Media.

He also co-authored The Most Amazing Marketing Book Ever with his own community, Rise. (FYI, my own podcast is referenced, and I get a mention in the Endnotes!!) His blog, GROW, and podcast ā€œThe Marketing Companionā€ are ranked among the top-rated publications in the marketing field.

Heā€™s a futurist, business consultant and educator. And I was right - 30 minutes wasn't long enough.

However, the 43 minutes we spent together were incredibly insightful if you want to get paid to speak, write a book, develop your personal brand and become KNOWN!

Mark shares his humble speaking beginnings when payment was a chicken dinner. He tells of how he put on his 'big boy pants' and battled his nerves to get on stage. We discuss what should come first the book or the talk and how to monetise both.

He also shares some novel ways to get compensated for speaking and why, even though he coaches speakers he's never been coached himself!

And at the end of it all declares, Personal Brand is Everything!

In this previously LIVE episode, I speak with public speaking coach and mentor, Adrienne Saunders.

Adrienne is the Founder and Director of Yes You Can Training which provides learner-based and practical public speaking and confidence training programmes to small and medium-sized companies. The first line of her website says it all... ā€˜Every time you speak and there is someone listening, it's public speaking.' She works mainly with female leaders in a male-dominated business environment to enhance their communication skills so they can make themselves heard. Adrienneā€™s background is in team gymnastics, achieving World and European Championship medals. Her sporting skills led to success in a business career which she now shares with professionals to help them reach their full potential. Obviously, we spoke about Adrienneā€™s medal-winning sports background and discussed how an athlete's discipline and focus can be used in the business world. Plus, how confident communication skills can make a leader's job easy! She also told me how she helps clients craft a talk and gets them on a TEDx stage.

Banish imposter syndrome and public speaking anxiety with NLP, with guest Vanda Varga. #25

33m · Published 28 Aug 14:43

My guest is Vanda Varga, the Tour Guide to Your Mind! Vanda is an accredited trainer and Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), hypnotherapy and a Silva Method practitioner.

As a tour guide to your mind, Vanda can help you explore, uncover and re-map your map of the world.

I have recently been a student of Vanda's and what a fabulous experience it was. I took the NLP practitioner training course and am now an accredited NLP practitioner! šŸ‘

She's an amazingly engaging and supportive teacher. A credit to her knowledge and experience of her subject but also to her communication skills.

She explains in our conversation one of the presuppositions of NLP - there is no failure only feedback - i.e., we either succeed or learn! She explains how what we shine a light on is where our energy flows, so choose where you direct your attention!

It was an enlightening conversation that also touched on Vanda's experience with the Silva Mind Control Method as a child and how it shaped her map of the world.

We also discussed her amazing tool bag of NLP techniques including The Circle of Excellence and anchoring that help build confidence and diminish the anxiety of speaking in public. As well as how to overcome imposter thinking by speaking more positively to ourselves.

Confidence comes when you stop ā€™should-ingā€™ on yourself! SAS with Jackie Goddard. #24

30m · Published 07 Aug 10:42

The one that should have been Jackie speaking about speaking with Vanda Varga but... šŸ˜±

I made a huge BOO BOO and got the day wrong!!

Apologies. So, I spoke about speaking with myself. I answered some questions that I'd asked myself but have answers that are relevant to anyone that needs to raise their confidence to speak to their audience. These include:

* What can you learn from being on stage?

* What happens when you work at the edge of your comfort zone?

* How can learning to improvise help with confidence and creativity?

* How can you connect with your audience?

* How when you ask your 'tribe' what they think of you, you can uncover your Superpower and help your Personal Brand.Ā

Plus, we waste so much time being who we think we 'should' be that we forget that we are enough just as we are.

Be daring with marketing and stand out from the crowd with guest Anna Bravington. #23

33m · Published 28 Jul 13:59

For this episode, I spoke about speaking with Anna Bravington, marketing strategist and co-founder of Those That Dare.

Anna has 24 years of experience across digital and marketing and has worked on some crazy campaigns in partnership with brands like Microsoft and PlayStation whilst heading up digital marketing at GAME.

In 2022 she was named one of the NatWest Telegraph 100 Female Entrepreneurs to Watch.

Anna is a huge advocate for diversity in marketing and is investing in new ways of capturing diverse voices.

Most recently Anna has joined 36 authors, from 10 countries, to collaborate on a Mark Schaefer project and write the first book ever created entirely by a Web3 community entitled, The Most Amazing Marketing Book Ever. In her chapter, Anna discusses Experiential marketing. She reads her own chapter and tells me how reading your own words is harder than it looks.

Anna is also a speaker. She has presented at, among others at Brighton SEO and the You Are the Media Creator Day. She is multi-faceted and multi-talented.

Among the questions, I asked Anna was what advice would she give to an introvert, i.e., somebody that's quite shy but knows they need to get out there and promote themselves by speaking in public?

Her answer was to start where you feel comfortable and with an audience that will encourage and support you and also give you constructive (not destructive) feedback.

And I agree. Take baby steps! Start small and start with an audience that loves and supports you.

For Anna and myself that audience is the You Are The Media community, but for you, it might be a group, or online community you belong to, family or even your other half (an audience of 1 is still an audience).

Anna also tells me how you can successfully market Christmas dinner in a tin! Be daring with your marketing, she says.

She is a lover of data and says by using SEO correctly she can get CEOs excited about the metrics.
