SpaceTimeMusic

by Lyd the SBW

SpaceTimeMusic is a podcast exploring the roots, shoots and branches of some of Lyd the SBW's favorite songs through samples and covers. I have always been a music lover. In it I hear love, first and foremost and just like love, it transcends time and space. Come along with me as I tumble down musical rabbit holes. And for me, that usually begins with a sample. I’ll hear a sample in a song and won’t be able to remember where it’s from. I’ll consult Papa Google and discover three other songs that are sampled in that same song and then go searching for them on a streaming service. And that’s when it happens. Through a simple search, a trail of musical cookie crumbs reveals itself to me leading to the most amazing ear-candy houses I have ever heard, sans the child-eating witch.

If I Was Rich: From Short Story to Dancehall Classic

On today’s episode:

If I Was Rich: From Short Story to Dancehall Classic

I think it was in episode 2 that I mentioned how our West Indian brothers and sisters will remix any and all songs so this is the first of a number episodes that will feature some of my favorite use of samples, of remakes and remixes by Caribbean artists.

Rich Girl by Louchie Lou and Michie One is probably the first time I remember hearing a dancehall song sample a song that is so clearly NOT of reggae or even soul or R&B origin but I didn’t immediately know it was a sample and remake of If I Was a Rich Man from the musical Fiddler on the Roof. It’s quite possible that my mother overheard it and asked if I was listening to Fiddler on the Roof but I could just be making that up. I can’t really remember how I discovered where the song was from but it was the first time I thought, man, Jamaicans will make a dancehall remix of ANYthing.

On a completely different note, if you are in need of some centering, healing, calming music I highly recommend the Healing Vibes series from Yogetsu Akasaka, a Japanese Zen Buddhist monk/live-looping artist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUoG8MfKNoQ

Soul Makossa: A TransAtlantic Conversation

12m · Published 19 Jun 11:00

In this episode Lyd the SBW listens to Soul Makossa. Soul Makossa and its musical children exemplify the call-and-response nature of music. Black American music has its roots in west Africa. Enslaved Africans brought their musical traditions with them as they were sold across the Americas creating rhythms and music that would give birth to gospel, blues jazz, samba, rhumba, soul, funk, rock, r&b, pop, reggae, soca, bachata, merengue, house, hip-hop and innumerable sub-genres, including, makossa, a style of funk-dance music from Cameroon. Little tidbit, kossa means "I dance" in Duala.

I Only Have Eyes for You

On today’s episode:

I Only Have Eyes for You

I was listening to Spotify, playing classic Lode Runner online (yes, I am played-the-original-Lode Runner-on-an-Apple IIe-years-old) and falling down Spotify holes, when a song by Timothy Bloom came on. I liked the sound of his voice and went to his artist page to find that I was already following him and had even “clicked the heart button” on one of his songs it’s called The Beginning (Work it Out).

I began playing it to refresh my memory and heard the haunting first notes of I Only Have Eyes for You by The Flamingos sampled in the background.

Ready or Not

I picked Ready or Not, track number 3 on the Fugees’ sophomore album “The Score” for the first episode because listening to this song was the first time I heard musical proof of someone having the same allegedly weird musical taste as me.
