Episode 34: Katrina Davis

1h 1m · Published 02 Aug 02:28

Joining the YTunes Show this week is Katrina Davis, a comedian/writer/producer based in Los Angeles, but started her career in Florida!

Katrina shared what it was like growing up in Florida, having a dad that worked for the railroad, and what it's like sharing music with your parents. She grew up making "thrift store" music, how her high school parties were super lame and the unusual way she overcomes her fears.

Into college, Katrina had quite a few crazy roommate stories, what it was like hearing music that actually represented HER, and what it was like not being accepted in your own community because of how others labeled her. But, as David so beautifully pointed out "not caring is an option."

More music was brought up inspired by the crazy things her parents did and Maggi and Katrina discussed all of their 90's musician crushes.

This week, our Listener of the Week Story comes from Stephanie Landers and a song from Ray Stevens "Mississippi Squirrel." Then we head to Philidelphia for Band Or Bar. Try to guess along with Katrina and Maggi before clicking on the links to reveal the answers. Then, Katrina's guilty pleasure is anything less than current before we discover that Katrina is particularl good at "blacking out." Hear the whole experience while shares her First Concert Story.

Episode 33: Steve Bean

59m · Published 25 Jul 15:00

Actor and former comedian Steve Bean, whom you may recognize from Cheers, Quantum Leap, and Shameless, joined Maggi and David to talk about his early comedy career in Boston with David before digging into the elephant in the room, his fake plastic nose. Steve didn't mind us being "nosy" about his cancer as he talks about his Nose-Picking-Confession and the process of getting diagnosed, treated, and what's next after the tumor.

Steve shares his life long love affair with Paul McCartney, the theme of Chinese Restaurants in his life and proves that ART SELLS MUSIC! Sharing music is different now in 2017 and describes how he and his son, Jake spend hours going back and forth.

The back porch is where most of the great music in his life has been discovered, and coincidentally, Steve and David Letterman share the same taste in music...which according to Steve, is 'excellent.'  Steve rounds out his Fave5 by putting an offer on the table for listeners--he will buy you a particular album because you are GUARANTEED to love it.

The Listener Song Of The Week comes from Arlo in Pacoima, CA with a quite funny story about Boz Scaggs and his father. Want to share a song and story? Make sure to email the show at [email protected]

Band or Bar takes us to Ft. Meyers, FL. Try to guess along with Steve and Maggi before clicking the links to find out more about each!

Steve shares a guilty pleasure before educating Maggi about how to address someone born in Lynn, Massachusetts and a passion project that didn't pan out the way he had hoped.

Ernie spills the beans on how Ricky Martin may have spoiled him early on in his comedy career, why he learned the fine art of balloon twisting and why making pinatas started his family in show business! He has an incredible relationship with his Tia, who is one of the only Latina Actresses to have won an Emmy.

Episode 28: Andrew Solmssen

1h 3m · Published 20 Jun 08:11

This episode of YTunes Shuffle kicks off right away with the scary incident that arguably began Andrew Solmssen's weight loss journey. We discuss his new found love for hiking, (find the hawk video he was talking about here) his now typical diet, and the amazing bike share program in West Hollywood.

We talk about how a car was actually limiting his mobility at his heaviest and that he felt he need to fight to disprove stereotypes about fat people. While at his heaviest, Andrew breaks down the his entire experience of airplane travel and how it should be like a game of Tetris and why hanging out at Starbucks was so much different for him at 500 pounds than his thinner companions.

Andrew shares how he went to the same high school as the Obama children, although at very separate times, and how a Peter Gabriel concert informed his half page memory in the high school year book. Motorcycles  and computers kept him moving from one clique to another in school all while MTV’s “120 Minutes” informed a majority of the soundtrack to his young life.

Born in Brazil and raised in Washington DC with one younger sister, Andrew also discusses the intense pride he feels for his sister and her accomplishments.

After we go through Andrew’s Fave5, (of which he made an awesome playlist on Spotify for you) we shared our Listener Song of The Week; Justin from Eden Prairie, MN shared a story that involved “FreeBird” as the soundtrack.

Band Or Bar takes us to College Park, Maryland, and Andrew’s Guilty Pleasure sounded too awesome not play a clip of it.

Find Andrew's Corner of The Internet on Twitter or Instagram. Andrew had so many wonderful stories that didn't make the cut, so if you'd like more...check out our Soundcloud page for more snippets and B-side tracks.

Episode 27: Chad Ridgely

1h 8m · Published 13 Jun 15:00

Chad Ridgely is a national touring comedian, who happens to have written and produced and starred in his first feature length comedy/horror film "Massacre On Aisle 12." He has another feature film coming out later this year and is working on a documentary about the underground comedy scene in Southern California. What makes Chad so dynamic isn't just his excellent comedic timing, it's the layers of personality due to years spent as a police officer in Washington D.C. and working security detail for the likes of celebrities like Michael Jackson.

Chad shares his fave five and talks about how he accidentally fell into police work, how being the funny guy on the squad translates into his stand up, how a play he saw in NYC pushed him to leave a girl friend and move to Los Angeles, how he made friends effortlessly when he moved to the West Coast and his philosophy on life.

"Band or Bar" takes place in Lubbock, Texas where we discover what exactly makes a good dive bar...according to Chad. His first concert takes us full circle to his most famous securty detail client.

This episode is deep and inspiring and full of plenty of laughs. Find Chad Ridgely on Instagram or Twitter; then check out the extras that could make the cut but were definitely worth sharing.

We find out that his super supportive mom doesn't come in the typical "mom-jeans" and that what kids vote you in high school...was particularly true, at least for Justin.

Band-Or-Bar takes us to the island of St. Croix but his guilty pleasure goes back to 2005! Justin remembers his first three concert...and a view that could have killed. Link up with Justin on Twitter or Instagram.
