WorldArts Sessions EP 6: The Bulls - featured WorldArts artist of the week.

11m · Published 29 Sep 22:48

Los Angeles dreamgazers The Bulls are violinist and multi-instrumentalist Anna Bulbrook (The Airborne Toxic Event/Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros) and guitarist Marc Sallis (The Duke Spirit). They discovered their mutual love for 80's and 90's new wave and shoegaze during a chance meeting in the Mojave Desert. The band has released two EPs: Small Problems and Prudence, which includes a string-drenched cover of “Alright” by Supergrass. They have been Artists-in-Residence on Alt 98.7, headlined a residency at the storied venue, The Satellite, that was featured in The Los Angeles Times , and have opened shows at the El Rey, Regent, and Troubadour. They recently headlined the first “Play Like A Girl” showcase at the Echo, which was sold-out. “Small Problems,” the title track from the band’s 2015 EP, has been played on KROQ’s LOCALS ONLY and surpassed 100,000 streams on Spotify. In addition, KCRW picked “Prudence,” from the same EP, as a “Top Tune.”

“A beguiling hybrid of dream pop and shoegaze [that] warms the heart and shakes the bones…” – Consequence of Sound

“Bulbrook is best known as the violist who stitches together melodies with The Airborne Toxic Event, and she also has toured with Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, but she really comes into her own as a bandleader with The Bulls. Wrapped up in Sallis’ low-key guitar shimmers, Bulbrook intones solemnly beautiful dream-pop chansons, such as the slowly unwinding spell ‘Come Unwound.’” – LA Weekly

“Dolores O’Riordan on Xanax.” – We Forget Who Said This But We Like It

Band Bio:

Chris Swanson (Guitar/Vocals)

George Pantoja (Drums)

Angel Aldana (Bass/Backing Vocals)

Ross Manzo (Percussion, Sound Reinforcement)

From the gutters of the San Gabriel valley comes a fresh hit of audible THC. Children of an eclectic sounding upbringing, Bodegas blends high energy Rock, sexually inspiring Soul, and smoked out Reggae to form an original sound that doesn't fit into any packaged genre. After 3 self released albums this quartet is hard at work on their 4th record. Playing regularly around their home base of Southern California, live performances are something similar to a house party that you don't ever want the cops to shut down...

WorldArts Sessions Ep. 3 - Alex G

12m · Published 05 Sep 16:00

Alex G is a Colorado-raised, LA-based singer/songwriter, dreamer, sister, and friend. She is an old soul who loves Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett, and a childlike believer in all things daring and magical and pure.

Formerly afraid to sing in front of people, Alex began her career by posting videos to YouTube from the quiet safety of her home. Her channel quickly gained a following, moving Alex away from her fear and toward a career as a musician. Now, four years in the making, her channel has over 1.3 million subscribers and 160 million views.

In September 2014, after years of writing music and the release of two EPs, Alex released her self-titled debut album. While preparing for this album, Alex had the opportunity to collaborate with several incredible songwriters and producers, including Lauren Christy, Mikal Blue, Jason Reeves, and Jason Mraz.

Alex’s life collides with her music to tell a story. With honesty and courage, she handcrafts her songs with love and vulnerability, believing that through telling her story, people will find hope and discover the beauty in even the most broken chapters of their own. Be love. Be contagious. Pass it on.

WorldArts Sessions Ep. 2: - False North

13m · Published 01 Sep 19:00

False North is an Arizona based, alternative rock band consisting of Sean Wilson (vocals/guitar), Ryan Orr (lead guitar), Conner Libera (backing vocals/bass), and Greg Grandlienard (drums/percussion).

In late summer of 2013, Conner approached Ryan and Sean proposing they form a band. The two quickly agreed, and Conner recruited his former roommate, Greg, to play drums.

Inspired by bands such as The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Brand New, Modest Mouse, and The Kooks, False North combines buzz-chimed tones with melodic lyrics and harmonies to create a modern sound all their own.

Though False North gained a following after self-releasing their homemade demo in November 2013, it would not be until March of the next year that the band would play their first live show. False North has since had an abundance of live performances, including concerts at Phoenix venue the Pressroom and Flagstaff's Orpheum Theatre.

False North released their debut album, Burning Fast, on October 30th, 2015.

WorldArts Sessions Ep: 1 - Fraser Churchill

WA Sessions Ep. 1: Fraser Churchill

Fraser Churchill sung a raw and acoustic set on the WorldArts stage Monday to kick off the 2016 WA Sessions, a new series that will feature emerging artists from across the globe. Fraser performed three stripped-down songs to promote his upcoming EP which will be released late summer 2016.

Watch the recordings of “Easy,” “Oxygen,” and “City” in the first WA Session below.

The 24-year-old London native developed his sound at an early age singing in gospel choirs and attending jazz concerts in his free time. With a voice like Andy Grammer and the soulfulness of John Mayer, Fraser’s sound is catchy, powerful and pure.

“It’s crazy how sometimes a song takes like two years,” Fraser says in his WA Sessions interview. “You forget all about it and it pops up randomly”. Writing and producing music has been the forefront of his visit to the U.S. and Fraser is currently dedicating his time to getting his foot in the music industry.

His journey toward becoming a full-time musician and creating his own sound is communicated through his song “City,” which he describes as being, “about being a new place you’ve never been before” and, “that essence of being who ever you want to be”.

As his career begins to take off, Fraser will spend the remainder of his time in Los Angeles writing and playing smaller, more intimate gigs to focus on creating more songs before recording his full-length album.
