Boost Your Boutique with Emily Benson

I’m wrapping up this powerful 3 part series on PAYING YOURSELF!!! If you haven’t heard it yet, I’m over boutique owners saying they can’t pay themselves because they need to prioritize paying for other things. Most likely, you aren’t managing your margins or expenses appropriately— that’s the first place to check in with yourself. If you go longer than 6 months without paying yourself, most likely, you never will and your boutique will fall flat because you aren’t managing your money correctly. In this episode I focus on teaching you how to actually start paying yourself: 1. Focus on your NET profit. Keep margins high, watch expenses closely. 2. Find an amazing and supportive accountant who understands you and your goals. They don’t make you feel bad about money or scared of the IRS. 3. If you are a sole proprietor or a single member LLC, simply write yourself a check from the business account, and deposit it into your personal account as the owner’s draw. If you are a corporation, partnership LLC, or have employees you may want to consider using a payroll service to help you manage paying the taxes on payroll to yourself and others. I'm going DEEPER with this whole 'YOU'VE GOT TO PAY YOURSELF" idea this week. Because really guys, you HAVE to start taking a salary from your boutique business... and this week I'm going to tell you WHY you MUST pay yourself! I feel like I'm trying to convince boutique-land to adjust from a very old martyrdom mindset, to a "money flows in and out of my business with ease and grace" mindset! Here's my top 3 reasons why you really MUST start paying yourself: 1. We have to evolve into a modern relationship with money! Te internet has changed everything but our ideas haven't- we still get caught up in the 'work hard, make money' mentality. Let's get excited to unplug from the old and plug into the new concept of money! 2. Most flows as energy-- when you don't pay yourself, you won't be able to spend it and they cycle of in/out energy flow gets blocked. 3. We love to be rewarded as humans!! Even a small amount to allocate to yourself to get your nails done or a dinner out can feed the positive flow and give your brain a pat on the back for putting your all into the business! Apparel shows, markets, showrooms... what?! I've noticed that so many new boutique owners are simply going online and purchasing inventory through aggregate sites like FashionGo and LA Showroom. I'd never say that this is a bad thing, buttttt if you want to run a quality boutique, it's a great investment to go to a Market Center or Fashion Apparel Trade Show each season. Why? 1. Create a plan for the show. Know how much money you can spend each month based on last year's sales. Understand what your assortment needs are! 2. Go slow around the show-- you don't have to be rushing around to get to all of it. Pick the 1 show that is the best fit for you and your brand and use your intuition walking around to stop in the booths that have the best 'feeling' for your shop. 3. How to interact with vendors-- my proven process of walking in a booth and leaving not feeling like you spent a million dollars!!! <<--- this is the MONEY information!
