Episode 105: Applications open for Kenneth's Personal Assistant

14m · Published 01 Aug 02:00
"If money were no object, I'd have a personal assistant"
We’re checking in after a couple of great episodes, reflecting on Alex and Karen whilst also sharing a couple of secrets from behind the scenes at Do More Good HQ.
We’re transported back to car journeys in the eighties by the background music before James makes his second pitch for a ban on tequila. We talk through the big challenge facing Karen at Drinkaware in creating lasting societal change, but perhaps the harder task of Kenneth finding a willing PA.
There are thoughts on Alex’s specialism being her superpower before we delve into the power of the sticker, gym workouts and social shout-outs in the mailbags.

Episode 104: Karen Tyrell on society's complicated relationship with alcohol

51m · Published 25 Jul 02:00
"Prisons are like a miniature universe"
This week we’re joined by the CEO of Drinkaware, Karen Tyrell, to talk through her career - from cell rooms to the boardroom. We get into society’s complicated relationship with alcohol and managing the organisation’s relationship with big business.
We kick off this week by revealing the fastest parkruns in the country, braving outdoor swimming and diving into a category A prison straight out of university. Karen shares the stories from the front line which led to a passion for supporting people. We find out what kind of chief executive she is, the importance of a strong foundation and how she plans to achieve massive societal change. James makes an unsuccessful pitch to ban tequila, Karen talks seatbelts and Kenneth wants to know how to remain independent.
Pour yourself a low-alcohol beer, if they haven’t already sold out, and hear how Drinkaware can improve the school run.

Episode 103: Crafting the perfect email with Alex Fearon

54m · Published 11 Jul 02:00
"Everyone doing really well, invests in email"
Bringing her Geordie-South-African accent to the show is Alex Fearon, the third sector’s email guru.
She puts up with some chat about Kenneth’s new role and politely doesn’t mention that James has come dressed as a 20-year-old pop star before delving into the dark arts of email. We hear about starting out as a freelancer, how to get jobs done now-now, why we should (but don’t) ignore the vanity metrics, delegating the jobs we don’t like and turning down songs during the rude bits. There’s a discussion on where to find nice people, pivoting personal to business accounts and replicating the 2005 PTA Newsletter.
Stick an emoji in your subject line, check out dark mode before pressing send, and join us for a chat about the premature suggestion that email is dead.

14m · Published 04 Jul 02:00
"Eau du Podcast."
The bromance vehicle is back on track with a teaser episode for another run of shows. The boys return to Chapter 72 on Bermondsey Street - face to face for the first time in years. After a recharge of the batteries we cover a Wayne Murray love-in, the death of social media, expensive wrapping paper and a plea for content. We review our appearance on Vic Turnbull's youtube channel, offer prizes and make a solemn promise to share more episodes in the coming weeks before the sugar rush from one too many Appeltisers kicks in.

Episode 101: One page strategies with Wayne Murray

1h 0m · Published 06 Apr 02:00
"We were laying the track in front of the train."
It’s a hundred days without a drink for Kenneth as he describes ordering tea in the pub and his fears for how this might affect the show.
We are joined on this seminal night by Wayne Murray, the founder of Humanity Squared, the aspiring human and father focused on innovation, transformation and human-centred strategy to drive positive change. We talk lived experience, making it up as you go, quitting jobs in lockdown and the longest pier on the world. Wayne shares his passion for getting the experts into the room, one-page strategies and how he refuses to work with arseholes - which sounds like an endorsement for the show.

For the hundredth episode we returned to our very first recording - a pub near the JustGiving Awards in 2017. We've upgraded for 2022 with a backstage pass and slightly better equipment than the phone and headphone cable we recorded on five years ago. No upgrade on the hosts I'm afraid.

"I am the least likely tech CEO you may come across."

We speak to Dave Evans, the founder and CEO of the social enterprise OKO which is a social enterprise focused on creating opportunities for young adults. He tells us about how his experience growing up formed an aim of providing two million youngsters with mentors. To show how his programme works we also have James and Adarsh to talk through their experiences with OKO, unconventional interview technique, software robotics, getting emotional, getting sacked and top tips for implementing Oracle’s advanced procurement suite.

Episode 98: Six minute pitches with Eugenie Harvey

1h 0m · Published 25 Oct 02:00
"The younger generation will not accept this."
In this episode we talk to Eugenie Harvey, the Chief Executive of The Funding Network, a London-based charity that connects small non-profits and donors. We start with Eugenie's ill-fated comedy career before a parkrun love in and a discussion on Australian bushfires, the usual intro.
Eugenie tells us about moving to London and how that involved leaving her friends behind and earning less money. Then there's how she changed the world for a fiver, a famous bag and the power of collective giving. We get a seven-minute pitch, the differences in how we give around the world and an embarrassment about wealth. Kenneth has a new haircut to go with his new job and James has lost his voice.
