363: Create an EXPERIENCE LIST

13m · Published 25 May 07:00
In this MICRO-episode… we’re digging into the strategy of creating what we call, an “EXPERIENCE LIST.”  This is for EVERYBODY… but especially with those folks who wrestle with writing down their dreams and goals.  And trust me… that’s a LOT of people.  Yes… we ALL know that writing down our goals is important and the studies have shown that.  BUT… for a lot of people… that feels intimidating and/or overwhelming.  Plus, it can cause an inner-wrestling match over whether something qualifies as a “big dream” or an “important goal” or whether it’s as cool as someone else’s dream or a “SMART goal.”  Well… screw that noise!  Nope… we’re going to use a different word to guide us.  Yup… we’re going to ask, “What are some EXPERIENCES… (big or small) I’d like to have in my lifetime?”  And with that… you’ll create your EXPERIENCE LIST.  Oh… and this is a MICRO-episode… because it’s less than 15 minutes!!!  So… let’s get to it!

MORE ABOUT THIS EPISODE:

I’m getting ready to take a couple of weeks off for our younger son's graduation in LA.  Melissa and I are heading out to celebrate with him and have some great “experiences” along the way!

Plus, we’ve set some specific time aside to create a NEW “Experience List.”

So I was inspired to share an idea with you!

BACKGROUND:

Recently at an event, someone approached me after my keynote.  It was a woman in her mid-thirties.  She looked smart, successful and put-together but she quickly admitted she was  wrestling with writing down any dreams and goals because she wasn't sure if her dreams were BIG enough and she wasn't sure their goals were SMART enough.

She was caught in something I call the “SMART Trap” because she wasn't sure if the ideas that were coming to her head were actually goals because she didn’t know if they were specific enough... or measurable... or realistic... or… you get the picture.  As a result…   she felt stuck.  And she was in the “COMPARISON Trap” because she was trying to compare the size and the validity of her dreams to others in the room.

Ever been there?  I sure have!

So, instead of her trying to come up with “Dreams” or “goals,” I suggested a different question.

Here’s the question:

What are some “experiences” you would like to have?

I’ve found that “EXPERIENCE” is a lower pressure word.

So instead of asking about your DREAMS or you GOALS, ask yourself about the kinds of experiences you’d like to have in your lifetime.

Because… experiences matter!

“The purpose of life, after all, is to live it.

To reach out eagerly and without fear

for new and richer experiences.”

- Eleanor Roosevelt

HOMEWORK:

  • STEP 1: Ask... what kind of experiences (big or small) would I like to have?
  • STEP 2: List at least 10

"I think we should count our age by number of life experiences we've had instead of years!”

- Unknown

THINK IN CATEGORIES:

TRAVEL Examples:

  • I'd love to have coffee at a sidewalk cafe in Paris
  • I'd like to go white water rafting in Colorado
  • I'd like to take my family to Disney
  • I'd like to go zip-lining in Illinois.. or Costa Rica!

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Examples:

  • I'd like to learn to cook better
  • I'd like to be happier... more often.
  • I'd like to be in the moment more.

RELATIONSHIP Examples:

  • I want to really slow down and enjoy a meal 3 times a week
  • I want to find two great friends and really treasure them
  • I want to cultivate my friendship with X and do small things to really celebrate it

CAREER Examples:

  • Lead a team
  • See someone on my team thrive
  • To celebrate with my team when we win big

OTHER CATEGORIES:

  • Health
  • Fitness
  • Sports
  • Media - music, movies, and publishing
  • Education
  • Relationships
  • Service
  • Spiritual

“People grow through experience

if they meet life honestly and courageously.

This is how character is built.”

- Eleanor Roosevelt

CALL TO ACTION:

Create an EXPERIENCE LIST... and just see where it takes you!  And hey… share this with a friend!  Invite someone to do it with you!  And just see where it takes you!

Also… leave a comment and let us know about something you’ve put on YOUR “Experience List!”  I can’t wait to hear from YOU!

Antonio Neves joins us BUT this time… we’re flipping the mics. That’s right!  Tony is interviewing Mitch about what he’s learned as he’s approaching 365 episodes of Dream Think Do!  It’s a fun, inspiring and eye-opening conversation because Tony is not only a bestselling author and speaker, it’s an award-winning journalist who has interviewed world leaders, celebrities and entrepreneurs from around the world.  Mitch didn’t know what questions were going to be asked (other than some awesome questions Dream Think Do listeners submitted when they heard about the interview).  Antonio went deep into the archives to draw out some great behind the scenes stories and powerful insights from Mitch.  Plus, the LAST question really surprised Mitch and brought some personal revelation that brought ALL the emotions.  So listen in and be ready to get inspired to climb YOUR mountains, define those important milestones in YOUR life… and find the right ways to stick with YOUR dreams!

REVIEWS:

Since we’re coming up on 365 Episodes… would you take this opportunity to leave a review on Apple Podcasts?  Click here and be taken to the show.

Simply give it an honest rating and… if you’re willing… a quick review.  Share something you’d want others to know about Mitch and the show!

Every review counts and each one helps us to reach more people!  That makes a BIG difference because… as you know… we want to help the world to dream bigger, think better and do more of what each person’s put on the planet to do!  So… THANKS!!!

YOUR QUESTIONS:

Now, we’d asked if DREAM THINK DOers wanted to submit any questions and you guys responded with some GREAT ones.

From those, Antonio and I chose the following questions:

“Ok, here we go. I love love love my podcast. In fact, I am creating a second and am a co-host on another. My question is, when there is momentum and excitement it is easy to keep on going. What happens when the juices dry up a bit? How do you get your mojo back?” - Gail Craft

“Over the time I have gotten to know you listening to your show, I would say (and I know many agree) that you are gifted with wisdom. What would you say has been a key to growing in wisdom for you that a younger dream think doer could implement?”

- Beth Medley

“People are constantly suggesting that I start a podcast, but the market is so saturated that I don’t think I have much value to add. What made you take the leap? Did you start by just interviewing friends and colleagues?” - Kim Harden

But other than these 3… I didn’t know the questions Antonio was going to ask.  So it felt like we were operating without a net.  BUT I trust Tony… so we went for it.  And it was a blast!

We talked about things like:

  • PERSISTENCE… and how to stick with something (even when you’re tired)
  • SURPRISES along the way… and some of the unexpected gifts of pursuing dreams
  • SETBACKS… because they’re going to come… and how do you get back up
  • FEAR… and how to overcome it in power but simple ways

But one of my favorite questions unearthed a story about some wisdom my bride Melissa offered me early on.  It’s something that helped me to set the course for my podcast but it’s also something that’s helped me live a happier and bolder life!  I can’t wait for you to hear THAT one.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

How about YOU!?  What stood out to you from Tony’s questions and the awesome questions from other DREAM THINK DO listeners?

More importantly… what’s something that stuck with you?

Also, let’s hear YOUR tips and strategies.  What’s something that works for YOU and/or what do YOU think works when it comes to sticking with a big goal?

And hey… what questions do YOU still have?  Comment and let me know!

And PLEASE share this special episode with someone who YOU think would appreciate it and/or might be needing it… right now!  They’ll thank you!

Know I’m rooting for you!

We’re talking with Ana Gabriel Mann and John David Mann.  Ana earned her degree in clinical psychology before going on to serve as an educator, therapist, corporate trainer, speaker, and coach. Her hubby is John is an award-winning author… who’s co-written more than 30 books! That list includes four New York Times bestsellers and five national bestsellers. I have to say that one of my absolute favorites was his His classic parable called The Go-Giver which he co-authored with Bob Burg who’s been on DREAM THINK DO twice! I’ve been wanting to have these two on the show for as long as I can remember!  Partly… because The Go-Giver helped to save my career a number of years ago.  And partly because this couple are a powerhouse!  I’m soooooooo happy to say that they’ve written a book together called “The Go-Giver Marriage” and it’s sooooooo good.  We’re going to talk about it and so much more… so let’s get to this!

360: The GRACE To RESET

24m · Published 27 Apr 07:00
Welcome to episode 360 where we’re talking about the GRACE to RESET!  Earlier this year, we OFFICIALLY declared the 3rd week of January is “RESET WEEK!” (link) That’s right!  We said that “RESET WEEK” was specifically designed to help us to get clear on our goals and new habits and RESTART the year in the right way!   Well… it's been one of our most downloaded episodes in 2022 so far.  But more importantly… it's sparked SO many conversations on the subject and the importance of giving yourself permission to have a RESET WEEK once and a while!

Now, when I talked about all of this in episode 246, we talked about this being a one time of year thing.  And that makes sense.  It’s good and healthy to set a specific time to think about the stuff you want to do… accomplish and experience.

BUT… here's the KICKER.  A LOT of people have said that they've actually listened to that episode later in the year.  Like in February... March... or April and they've said... “THIS week is the best week to RESET,” because it's the week I’m in!”  And… hey… I couldn't agree more!

So with this short episode... we're going to REVISIT the concept of RESET WEEK and invite you to give yourself some grace to make THIS week... (no matter when the flip you're listening to this)... your RESET WEEK.  And to give yourself a little grace as you do!  So… let’s get to this!

RELATED DREAM THINK DO EPISODES:

  • “Joy as a Constant Companion” - William Paul Young - Episode 229: www.mitchmatthews.com/229
  • “DREAM BIG… No Matter What” - Amberly Lago - Episode 310: mitchmatthews.com/310/

TWO THINGS WITH THIS SHORT EPISODE:

  • GRACE
  • AND... we're going to modify the questions for THIS RESET WEEK.

Man... I don't know about you... but although I'm super glad to see numbers improving every day... there's still a true residue that's on sooooo many people right now.  Including me.

  • I'm a pretty positive guy... but I've felt it easier to get bummed out and burned out and freaked out.
  • Am I alone on this?
  • We've got to give ourselves a little space and a LOT of grace.
  • That's got me thinking a lot about GRACE lately.

LET’S TALK ABOUT GRACE:

  • Definition of grace (noun):

1a: unmerited divine assistance given to humans for their regeneration or sanctification

1b: a virtue coming from God

  • Definition of grace (verb):

"Grace means having an effortless disposition for generosity, helpfulness, and goodwill towards others."

MORE QUOTES:

"Grace is the voice that calls us to change

and then gives us the power to pull it off."

- Max Lucado

"GRACE means that all of your mistakes now

serve a purpose instead of serving shame."

- Brene Brown

For me…

“Grace is giving yourself space to feel loved

AND to offer some love to others and yourself.

And THEN… and only then…

take another step forward.”

Mitch Matthews

“The more grace we have,

the less we shall think of ourselves,

for grace, like like reveals our impurity.”

- Charles Spurgeon

"I'm firmly inside the day's grace

in the embrace of relentless affection

where all is well

and joy is a constant companion."

- William Paul Young - Episode 229

Joy as a Constant Companion with Paul Young www.mitchmatthews.com/229

No fear.  No future tripping.  I'm soundly in the grace for the day.

NOW… from a place of grace… let’s talk about the questions we posed in 346.

THE MODIFIED QUESTIONS FOR THIS RESET WEEK:

  • Question 1: What’s something you want to give yourself PERMISSION to be a NOVICE at… THIS WEEK?
  • Question 2: What’s something you want to BE more THIS WEEK?
  • Question 3: What’s something you want to change or tweak THIS WEEK?

QUESTION 1:

What's something you want to give yourself the permission to be NEW at this week?

  • Silly example: Downton Abby
  • Trying something new with cooking
  • The layout of your office
  • Spiritual:
    • Prayer
    • Meditation
    • Scripture
  • Career:
    • Sign up for a class…
    • Read a book and actually TRY something
  • Life:
    • Sign up for a class
    • Give yourself s

359: Should I be a life coach?

58m · Published 20 Apr 07:00
We’re answering the question, “Should YOU be a life coach?” this week.  Why?  Well, according to a recent study, a lmost half of employees in the US are looking for a new job or plan to soon.   Which suggests that the curious pandemic-era phenomenon known as the “Great Resignation” is continuing into 2022. Specifically, 44% of employees now consider themselves “job seekers,” according to Willis Towers Watson's 2022 Global Benefits Attitudes Survey .

Wow.  That blew me away.  How about you?  As a part of all of this, I’ve had more and more people ask me whether they should and/or could become a life coach.  So, I wanted to dig into that.  Now, I’ll be the first to say that every once and a while... I do a deep dive on a subject that might not be for everyone.  BUT this one is for more people than you might expect.

If you listen to DREAM THINK DO, I'm guessing you may have thought about it.  If you’re wanting to dream bigger, think better and do more of what you’re put on the planet to do… then… there’s a really good chance you’d like to see others do that too!  So, if you’ve had that feeling… it’s possible you’d make an amazing coach.  AND… many should become coaches… BUT… not all.

That’s why I’m doing this episode. I'm going to take you behind the scenes of the coaching industry and I'm going to be straight up with you as I answer some common questions I get about who should become a life coach, business coach or success coach.

I’ll shoot straight with you about the industry and WHO would be a good fit... and have a chance to really make an IMPACT and... quite possibly... some serious INCOME from it.

And.... who I’ll also share who I think shouldn't try to become a life coach too.  It’s going to be a fun… eye-opening… truth filled conversation and I can’t wait to get started.  So, let’s do this!!!

FREE TRAINING: 3 Hours to $3K Masterclass

http://www.mitchmatthews.com/masterclass

MORE ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Why are we talking about whether you should/could become a life coach… NOW?

Well… like I said, in the introduction, LOTS of people are wanting a change.

There are a LOT of things contributing to this… but if 44% of the workforce are now considering themselves “job seekers,” there’s a very good chance that MANY of them  are wanting to do something more meaningful.  Something that’s more true to their purpose

And if YOU are wanting more purpose from your work… there’s a chance that you’d love to help OTHER PEOPLE find more purpose and fulfillment too.

So, one of the things that pops to some people's lists is life coaching.

They might think about hiring their own life coach, but they might also be asking, "I wonder if I should become a life coach?"

But let’s be honest… right from the start!  Some might wonder if it's a scam or a get-rich-quick scheme?

  • NOTE: You can make a LOT of money as a coach but that's NOT the reason to get into it.
  • There are a few BAD coaches out there… BUT what industry do you know that doesn't include a few bad apples who screw things up for everyone?
  • That's why I like to set the record straight... and try to do our part to make things right!

If you wonder whether being a life coach or a success coach is legitimate:

  • You can now get your Masters and your Ph.D. in coaching...
    • NOTE: Although I don't recommend that and I'll tell you why more in a bit.
  • BUT just the fact that you can get advanced degrees in coaching proves it's needed and that a LOT of people are seeking help!

FREE TRAINING:

We have some new free training coming up... because I really do want to help people who feel called to become a life coach to keep moving forward with confidence.

BUT I really do want to scare the wrong people away from becoming a coach...

So let's get started!

I often get asked, “SHOULD I BECOME A LIFE COACH?”

Good question: Is becoming a life coach ideal for you?

More specifically, here are some of the most common questions I get around the idea of becoming a life coach:

  • What does a life coach actually do?
  • Should I get certified as a life coach and/or do certifications matter?
  • Are there too many life coaches and/or is the coaching market saturated?
  • What are some of the things that keeps people from becoming successful life coaches?

Question 1: What does a Life Coach actually do?

The question seems to be, "What do SUCCESSFUL life coaches actually do?"

Because we've all seen those people who seem to be all talk in regards to being a coach, but you're just not sure what they actually do.

When someone is curious about this and they’re asking about what a success coach actually does… I ask THEM a question that usually shocks them:

"Are you willing to shut up?"

Yup.  That sets people back a bit… but it’s important to ask… especially if someone is wanting to be an EFFECTIVE and SUCCESSFUL Life Coach.

Here’s why: As a coach… it’s good to have systems and processes in place. BUT as a foundation, I believe in a "question-based approach."

What I mean is... I'm going to bring a VAST MAJORITY of my value to my clients by ASKING QUESTIONS... as opposed to TELLING them what to do.

The main reason for this approach is something I call:

 "The Intellectual Immune System"

This is based on the idea that we tend to reject things / ideas that come from outside us and we tend to embrace things that come from within.

Think of a time when you got advice… and you eventually rejected it… because it came from outside you.  Maybe it was advice from a parent, a manager, a friend, a mother-in-law or a complete stranger.  You knew it was good advice… but you just couldn’t move forward… because it just wasn’t YOU!  Been there?  I sure have!

For me… as a Coach… I work with talented... successful people... and most of the time... they know 90% of what they need to do... they just need a safe place to acknowledge that.

Plus, they need a safe place to talk through the ideas... vet those ideas... and vent... and bitch and moan a bit!  We're human.  It's needed!

And for the other 10%... I always say, "We'll figure it out together."

As a life coach, my job is to ask questions and create an environment where we can get to their genius.  Now... a key here is: You need/have to:

356: This one’s for “stressed graduates” and their parents! [And anyone else wanting to pursue an amazing life!]

53m · Published 30 Mar 07:00
Last week, I had conversations with multiple parents who were working hard to help their soon-to-be graduates navigate the big decisions coming their way!  In each case, I was able to share some stories and some strategies that seemed to help.  SO… I wanted to share them with YOU too.  Especially if you’re navigating the wild waters of graduation from high school and/or college… personally or with your kids.  And the good news is… these stories and strategies will also help you if you’re navigating decisions that will help you to live more of the amazing life you’re designed to live.  Because… let’s just be honest… if you’re choosing to live an AMAZING life… that means it might look a little crazy to some of the people that are around you.  So… it takes guts to do something different.  So that’s what this episode is all about!  Hope it helps YOU… whether you’re navigating new seasons due to a big mile marker like graduation… OR… you’re simply feeling like a change is coming and you’re wanting to get ready for it!  Enjoy!  (By the way… please share this one with someone who might need it!!! THANKS!)

RESOURCES I POINT TO IN THE EPISODE:

I mention my interview with Sam Griffin when I’m talking about how bravery isn’t necessarily what you want to lean on when you experience fear. www.mitchmatthews.com/118

I also speak to a concept that Jim Collins spoke to in his classic book, Good to Great.  It’s called the “Stockdale Paradox” and it’s something I’ve leaned on myself when I was stepping out and pursuing something new.  But it’s also something I’ve taught countless leaders when I’ve discussed the importance of taking a stand for something you believe in and being willing to take a chance on a needed change.  #priceless

Here’s an excerpt from Jim’s amazing book and his interview with POW survivor and entrepreneurial success story Jim Stockdale:

I didn’t say anything for many minutes, and we continued the slow walk toward the faculty club, Stockdale limping and arc-swinging his stiff leg that had never fully recovered from repeated torture. Finally, after about a hundred meters of silence, I asked, “Who didn’t make it out?”

“Oh, that’s easy,” he said. “The optimists.”

“The optimists? I don’t understand,” I said, now completely confused, given what he’d said a hundred meters earlier.

“The optimists. Oh, they were the ones who said, ‘We’re going to be out by Christmas.’ And Christmas would come, and Christmas would go. Then they’d say, ‘We’re going to be out by Easter.’ And Easter would come, and Easter would go. And then Thanksgiving, and then it would be Christmas again. And they died of a broken heart.”

Another long pause, and more walking.

Then he turned to me and said, “This is a very important lesson. You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”

To this day, I carry a mental image of Stockdale admonishing the optimists: “We’re not getting out by Christmas; deal with it!”

Whew… yup!  That’s gold.

354: Jamie Winship - Identity, Purpose & Living Fearless [In Turbulent Times]

1h 7m · Published 17 Mar 07:00

Jamie Winship was an award-winning Metro DC police officer who went on to spend nearly 30 years living and working in some of the most dangerous conflict zones in the world.  His unconventional efforts to bring about societal and racial reconciliation has led him to Indonesia, Jordan, Iraq, Palestine, Israel and now back to the United States.  Jamie calls this unique approach to healing and breakthrough the “Identity Method.”  He’s utilized it to connect people you’d never think would be open to working together.  But he’s also used it to help professional sports teams, business leaders, government officials, non-profit organizations and many others.  As you’ll hear in this incredible conversation… this simple process can be used to help bring people together… but just as importantly… individuals can utilize these steps to walk in more freedom, uncover more of their true identity… AND live with less fear… even in turbulent times.  This one blew me away… and I think you’ll love it.  So let’s get to it!

MORE ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Jamie Winship spent nearly 30 years living and working in conflict zones, and during that time he has learned an important truth: all human conflict originates from fear, and fear originates from a false view of God, ourselves, and others.

Until we exchange what's false for what's real, we will never experience being fully alive, fully human, and fully free.  During our conversation… we dive deep into the Identity Exchange Method as Jamie tells an incredible story of how it played out (and brought healing) in a surprising way within a group of people most would say would NEVER work together!
