Career Transition: Four Guiding Principles

Navigating a career transition requires inner work and strategic movement.  That inner work requires that we are honest with ourselves as we strive to live the life we want.  As a coach, her objective is to guide you to your aligned career.   In this episode, Dr. Monique highlights four guiding principles that she uses in her career coaching practice with clients.  It's called the L.E.A.D. (Listen, Embrace, Affirm, Decide) Coaching Framework.  Unpacking the principles is a small piece of the puzzle when considering a transition. The goal is to identify what you want and need, what you want to do, and how you want to feel. She also helps her clients create a career plan and a job search strategy. When We Heal, We Don’t Heal Alone

Dr. Monique chats with her grad school classmate and friend Dr. Shawn Arango Ricks.  Listen in as she talks about how her career has evolved over the years.  Her passion for helping black women to remember who they are and to heal shines through.

   Dr. Shawn Arango Ricks is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.

In addition to her academic life, Dr. Ricks is also a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist, and a nationally certified Hypnotherapist. practicing in Winston-Salem, NC (well, virtually now), and specializes in the mental health of Black women. 

She received her Ph. D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and her Masters and Bachelor degrees from The Pennsylvania State University, University Park. Dr. Ricks has been an invited speaker and facilitator in the areas of diversity, equity, and social justice as well as self-care and wellness.

Dr. Ricks has published extensively on issues of social justice and diversity, and is the author of “Psychological Tight Spaces: One Black Feminist Scholar’s Journey into Academia” and “Write Your Own Story” (an empowerment handbook for women. Her research interests include the psychosocial wellbeing of Black women (both inside and outside of the academy), epistemic injustice, and the impact of trauma on Black women and girls.

Journey to Soul Good (with Ericka Boone, Ph.D.) - Episode 8

In episode 8, Dr. Ericka Boone joins us for a candid conversation about her journey to "Soul Good".  She shares her experience from grad school to her role as Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Division of Loan Repayment.

She vividly describes how she overcame what she discovered was imposter fears as well as her courageous successes.  Prior to this position, Dr. Boone served as a Health Scientist Administrator in the Office of Science Policy and Communications at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) where she developed and targeted science-based publications, outreach initiatives, and other activities to educate a variety of audiences about the science of drug use, abuse, and addiction.
